Default Radium Engineering Venturi Jet Pump

There were no useful reviews found when I was looking for venturi jet pump options. Was considering Radium Engineering, SARD, and modification of Subaru's venturi pump as possibilities. here is so little info in the Subaru community but some other car platforms had limited info. So here we go...
20-0180 Venturi Jet Pump Kit


black -6ORB to 8.5mm barb is only for the siphon inlet
[3.09mm orifice] green -6ORB to 8.5mm barb is fuel return inlet for OEM and typical upgrade sized pumps, likely the typical use.
[3.38mm orifice] gold -6ORB to 8.5mm barb is for fuel return inlet when using very high flow pumps, probably not typical users.
[<1mm orifice] silver -6ORB to 8.5mm barb is only used if you are tee'ing off the in-tank pump output line, probably not typical use.

Plan on getting some new submersible fuel line for the install:
Gates 5/16" (1ft length) #27093
Gates 1/4" (1ft length) #27086
Some hose clamps, probably simple constant tension or oetikers due to the space
Probably a new fuel pickup gasket from Subaru (42060aa040) is a good idea as well





Sourcing/Price: It is what it is.
Pro - Their jet pump was close enough in price to the other brand I considered. Also I was not really thrilled about making random modifications to the Subaru jet pump. It was Radium's features that interested me enough to order one up.

Moot - Purchased these myself, I'm not sponsored. But if they wanted to send me a shirt or hat I would be pretty stoked.

Con - Appears that Radium has strong influence over the market pricing of their parts regardless of whom you buy them through. Unless you get free shipping with a distributor, I would recommend buying direct from Radium since their shipping costs are reasonable. Likely Radium's shipping cost is close to the same as part distributor will charge.


Packaging: I rate as acceptable with room for improvement.
Pro - The hardware are all in nice part bags. There are some stickers included +5hp +5hp.

Con - The kits shipped in a logo'ed box but it is small and will usually ship within another package. Mine was a plain shipping box but they use logo'ed packing tape. Come guys...some of use do not want clues as to the contents.** No instructions included (but they are on the website).

**Drop the fancy pants RADIUM logo'ed packing tape. Some will say this is being too picky. Really why the hell do I want someone to know the package is from Radium (not cheap parts) so they can decide they need it more than I? Perform your marketing in other places that do not pose risk to your customer...duh.


Details:
Pro - The matte black anodized finish outer/inner is great. Nice laser etching indicates the correct connections and flow path. The two inlet ports are -6ORB and the outlet port is a 8.5mm (5/16") barb. The inner drilling is about what I expected design wise. Whomever makes their AN fittings does a good job, they appear to be good quality pieces. O-rings are all brown Viton.




Moot - The two extra flow-in fittings are unlikely to be used by many. Would rather those were offered as optional parts and reduce down the kit price a little.

Con - The siphon-in fitting is a strait barb which makes for an already difficult Subaru install, even more difficult. The siphon hose has to loop around to work with this fitting. Submersible fuel line is not very flexible and the Subaru tank does not have much room to work with. This needs to be a 90deg fitting. The siphon-in fitting is also 8.5mm (5/16") which is not too friendly with the 6mm (1/4") hose Subaru uses on that port.

Installation: Keep in mind I am installing into a 2006 WRX tank using an STI fuel pump hanger with the plastic surge box.
Pro - You have to mangle off the Subaru jet pump and shorten the pipes a bit to get the just-right position. It does fit.

Moot - Having some alloy vice jaws helps install the fittings. Lube the o-rings and thread together. Since all the threads are alloy and it is o-ring seal there is not need to tighten the piss out of them. I would not go over 15 lbs-ft.

Con - It is a tight fit. Even with the workaround I used for the siphon-in fitting it is still a tight fit.* Had to get creative on the 1/4" hose connections.

*In my case I thought about finding a -6ORB to 1/4" barb 90deg elbow fitting. No dice. I could make due with a -6ORB to 5/16" barb 90deg elbow fitting. Still no dice. Radium had a -6ORB to 8.5mm barb swivel banjo fitting (#20-0338). I emailed them asking if that fitting would impede the siphon function of the jet pump. We felt it was worth a shot.
Note: What I settled on here may or may not work for another setup. But it is a good reference point.
Best photo I have at the moment....the parallax makes the venturi pump look wider then the hanger pipes, when they are basically the same spacing.



Support:
Pro - Radium responded to an emailed tech question the next day. I had heard some comment that their support can be spotty. So far this has not been my experience. Their response was a very brief but sufficient answer. I can see how some might interpret a short response as rude so maybe...

Moot - They have typically shipped quickly on my orders.

Con - None so far.




Still a bit of work in progress since I am not finished with complete project. I will update but decided to start the review thread to share what I have so far and maintain motivation to finish the review. Will add photos later and as I go...

If you could not tell already I will bluntly call it as it is. I could give two poops about pandering to a MFR, vendor, forum-popular idea, or the forum itself. Although so far my experiences with Radium and their parts has been very positive. I want useful information to select parts from instead of having to buy multiples, select based on assumptions, or having to modify parts that should work as-is dang it. So that is what I strive to provide.

Did you fit it in? Does it work better than the original jet pump? And do you have the original jet pump assembly? Mine isn't working so well and I'd like to know if there are pieces I'm missing.

Ports on the venturi pump = 3
outlet to tank is a permanent 8.5mm barb
the remaining two are -6ORB to use with the included fittings

Fittings in the kit = 4
one siphon inlet -6ORB to 8.5mm barb
one return inlet green -6ORB to 8.5mm barb
one return inlet gold -6ORB to 8.5mm barb
one silver -6ORB to 8.5mm barb

I tried modding the oem venturi per another forum, but the two tiny holes on the inlet side are super restrictive, and after drilling out the outlet side it seemed to create no vacuum. I tested with air through the inlet and there was a good bit of backpressure, likely would be a good bit more when trying to run fuel through it. :/

The sard version looks legit and already has the correct barb orientation. It's also a bit more pricey, but who knows how well it works and the size of the venturi jet hole. I'm hesitant to use either. The tiny 3mm jet hole on the radium makes me wonder how much it could affect how well the fpr works at lower power output. I also don't want the pump bypassing at idle because the venturi is preventing enough bypass. The pump is a DW400 and supposedly flows a lot, may be mandatory to run a speed controller to lower bypass at idle.

Don't drill out your stock venturi, it will basically destroy it

I've had this Radium venturi thingy for few years now... laying on the shelf, as I never got around installing it due to the "fitting factor", now that I see they offer swivel banjo fitting for proper orientation I might get one and install afterall, although I am yet to understand when you actually need one and the stock one becomes a restriction

how did you do the math for the proper restrictor selection?

I'm not sure how to calculate that. No way to determine how much fuel will be bypassed exactly, but at idle it will obviously be most of it. Running a lower pump speed will also change that.

I did notice the oem venturi had a small bypass valve, possibly to prevent too much backpressure on the regulator or maybe a safety in case the tiny venturi jets clogged.

Ideally we don't want the fpr seeing the venturi, so my plan would be to use the largest port and see how much it could pull from the other side. That would be if I got the radium. I do wonder how the sard is sized.
