Default Non-AVCS Cams in AVCS Heads?

I have searched and searched and couldnt really come up with all that actually needs to be done.

Anyways, I purchased some Crower 272 cams (Not Brian Crower) and they happen to be Non-AVCS cams for a EJ25. What I have gathered so far is that the intake cam gears needs to be swapped to the 2.0 liter intake cam gears. Can anyone confirm this?

I also gathered that since there is two cam sensors on the AVCS heads, that using these cams ill actually only be using one of them since one side reads the cam position and the other operates the AVCS. Can anyone confirm this aswell?

Ive seen like only two cars that have had these cams, but cant get any info on what was completely done.

we put non avcs cams in avcs heads all the time, but not on cars that are setup to use avcs. mechanically its simple, you just swap the cams and the timing assembly parts that are related.

sorry if that only helps with part one

Tell us more of what you're trying to do. Sounds like you're not disabling AVCS but you were trying to upgrade the intake cams and you realized you bought non AVCS cams. The exhaust side on an 06 wrx is non-avcs, Only the 09+ sti's have intake and exhaust variable cam timing.

You'll need to send the non AVCS cams back and get new cams for Avcs enabled subarus. AVCS enabled subaru ECU's have the cam position sensor mounted in the head and it reads directly from the cam itself. If the cam lacks the coin slot like divot in the back of the cam, the sensor won't be able to work and you'll throw a code, the cam will also lack the oil passages needed to activate the AVCS which works by rotating the cam gears themselves via oil pressure. You won't have a leak or break the car by not having those passages but you'll never be able to actuate the AVCS without them and there's no real way to machine those in without doing more expensive work than buying the correct units to begin with.

Non-AVCS engines have the cam position sensor mounted behind the intake cam pulley itself on the driver side bank only, you can get the adapter from a couple different manufacturers. However, the AVCS enabled ECU's have 2 cam sensors so you can't even retrofit that way I don't think.

Lastly, regardless of leaving AVCS on or off, the stock 2.5L AVCS cams will out perform the 2.0L cams. Either stay with the stock cams or swap the upgraded ones for units with the AVCS cam position sensor slots and the AVCS oil passages. Really, you can just swap them for the same cams made instead for the STI. It's the same thing.

Im just not wanting to run AVCS. The car isnt used to just putt around on the street. Its fully built, 6765 turbo, E85, etc. The car makes 650whp as of now with BC 272's in it. Im tossing these out to put the Crowers in it as I got a smoking deal on them. I purposely bought these Non-AVCS EJ257 Cams. They do have the trigger on the intake side cam for the cam position sensor to pick up.

As of right now, I believe I have the solution to it: WRX cam gears, Non-AVCS cam seals, and delete the code for whichever cam sensor that throws a CEL.

well you can run them, but like what everyone else said, probably a bad idea. I bought AVCS cams, but got the non Avcs cams and put them in, car runs well, just dies at idle and oddly only throws the driver side code P0345

I read everything you guys wrote here and I just want to make sure I have the right understanding of this. I have a slightly different setup, but same issue.

I have an '05 wrx, I got my hands on an JDM AVCS EJ205 and slapped it in. I was thinking instead of going the "buy JDM harness and ecu" route, I'd just buy some non-AVCS cams, and cam gears and cancel out avcs all together.

Is there anything that I'm missing to delete avcs?
