How did you end up with your first subie?

Any long story or short reply is welcome.

Unfortunately mine is somewhat long winded.

I have always wanted a Subaru STi in World Rally Blue as long as I can remember. Every time I tried to obtain one something would happen and I would end up with another car. Prior to actually picking up my first STi I had about 10 cars. When I was 21 I walked into a Subaru dealership to buy a WRB wagon. They would not allow to test drive or even see the vehicle so I left and purchased a BMW 335i. A few years had pasted and went looking for another STi. Went back to the same dealership again to buy a WRB wagon, this time they allowed me to see the vehicles they had one in white and one in WRB each with different rims. I asked the manager if I could switch the rims from the white to the blue and of course that was a no go, because how each car was packaged. I left and went to work to think about the purchase without putting a deposit, which the dealership warned against but I didn’t think it would sell in the two hours the dealership had remaining open till the next morning. Guess what, both sold that night so two slipped through my fingers. I ended up going down the street and buying a Cadillac CTS. Again a few years pass and the itch for Subaru never went away. I began to search again and found a WRB wagon but it’s two hours away. I made contact with the dealership, they advised they still have the vehicle in their inventory. I drove the two hours to see it but when I arrived I asked to see the STi. They informed me yes they still have it but it’s sold. They tried talking me into a base Impreza was unamused. Now between that last attempt and when I finally ended up with one I owned a Volkswagen CC and a Ford Raptor. At the time of owning the Raptor gas prices sky rocked and I was paying $150 a week to get to work. So yet again I started to look for a STi. This time I wanted either white or WRB in wagon or sedan. I located a dealership that had about 10 used STis. I made contact with the dealership asked what colors they had and was informed white, gray, dark blue and silver. I told them I wanted the white one and would be there in less than an hour and what my trade in was and where I wanted to be number wise. Once I arrived I was upset to not see it sitting out front and went to find a sales associate. After talking yet again about my trade and how much I wanted which was another hassle the salesman’s was off to pull the white STi sedan around. After about an hour and the salesman’s was no where to be found I ask for a manager. To which I was informed the white one was just sold and in detail. I was furious but the sales associate was attempting to locate another white one in a reasonable distance, which he couldn’t do. He finally took me to the roof top parking lot where they had every STi jam packed. I looked around and nothing grabbed my eye so I told them thank you but no thank you. As I was walking to my truck the salesman came pulling around in a bright orange STi. I feel in love, they allowed me to drive it for about 30 minutes. I filled out the paperwork and they tried to get me to come back to finish everything up which I of course refused. After a few more hours I left with my first Subaru STi the black and orange edition 1 out of 100. Since then I owned a few other cars but now currently own a 2018 DGM STi with no plans in trading it.

Both are beautiful cars! My story is much shorter and very different. I had been looking for a car for maybe 6 months at this point but not specifically for a wrx. I ended up taking a different route back home for fun, and saw a 2007 wrx wagon limited in satin white pearl. The car has a ton of really really weird history, but it was low mileage and completely stock so I bought it. Almost zero rust even though its been in Wisconsin for the past 7 years. Currently at 83k and the motor's running strong. Can't be said about the rest of the car, I spent pretty much all my time and money working on it. Recently got it protuned and plan to fully build the motor and transmission once I'm done with all the supporting mods.

I had a 2011 Charger R/T that decided to pop a head gasket. I wasnt super crazy about the car to begin with and wanted something fun with awd. So here we are lol! I liked the WRX back in the day and was into the bug eye but as a poor college kid couldn;t afford anything fun. The charger taking a dump was my excuse to try out a Subaru. So far Im happy with the car and community.

First Subaru was a Subaru wagon hand-me-down from wife's parents in 1990. I think it was an '88.

I had a 98 Audi A4 2.8Q 5MT since new. Put 58k miles on it in 2 years mainly for my job. It had the 5/50 bumper to bumper warranty with free service. I changed jobs and received a company vehicle. So sold the Audi. Soon after, I made another job change, so needed a car. I didn't want to pay a dime more than I received for the Audi ($23,500) and wanted a manual, AWD and the ability to track it. The new 01 2.5RS fit all of that, so I bought it.

Subarus after that: Sold a bunch of stock options and traded my wife's S-10 Blazer to an 02 Outback limited.

Went a while without a Subaru myself until 08 when I bought a new Legacy GT 5MT and wife got an 08 Outback base.

Traded the 08 Outback for a 13 Crosstrek Limited for the wife.

Got a used 07 WRX limited with an STi 6 speed for my son to use (mistake there)

Bought my father in law's 04 Outback after MIL passed.

Bought wife a 17 Legacy Limited (1 year old). Traded away the 04 Outback that I had to trick to get the infamous p0420 cel to stay away long enough to inspect.

Bought myself a 19 Crosstrek premium 6mt.

Son currently has a 20 STi on order. It's hit the port in Rhode Island and should be at the dealer any day.

Future Subarus? No idea. I keep looking at Cayman GT4s but I'm a practical guy mostly so who knows. Maybe I'll just drive the 19 Crosstrek for a bunch more years.

We get 100-200” of snow so I figured I should probably get awd. Kinda splurged for it.

Hard to beat the price, mpg, and ergonomics of Subaru.

Grew up in an area where subarus are popular and always loved the wrx and sti. Got stationed in Germany and bought a 98 legacy sedan from a German guy who had a couple other nice subarus. Fast forward to now and I finally have my wrx.

Boring story I know! I actually used google translate to purchase the car. He spoke into his and I spoke into mine.

After driving a sluggish albiet reliable old '96 Honda Accord for over a decade, come 2010 enough was enough. I wanted AWD, and something with a bit more spirit. Friends of mine have had WRX throughout the years, so that was my go-to. My wife at the time would simply not abide a WRX, so after quite some doing, I settled on getting a 2010 Impreza 2.5i. At least it was way way better than the sluggish boring old Accord. I drove the hell out of that Impreza; enjoyable.

The ink was barely dry on the divorce papers before I traded in the Impreza for the 2019 WRX I have now. Much better, ha.

I don't know if I've ever relayed this story anywhere, but here goes...

Wanted to get out of my old car in 2010 and had an opening late in the year. Two years into the recession was a weird place but I had great credit, my job was stable and I was trying to cut my losses on my old car.

Had decided my next car would be a Subaru years before and was cross shopping used GR STIs for months. After a few almost buys, I decided I'd just get something new instead. I'd been waiting for the widebody 2011 WRXs to come out but there were several delays in getting them into the dealership late in 2010.

Unfortunately, I knew that my credit was about to take a major hit in October; significant enough that it would basically mean car shopping would be out of the question for a few years. I decided in September that I couldn't wait any longer and was just going to buy an LGT, like I'd wanted before I bought my previous car. Found a good one about 40 miles away and headed out on a Saturday to sign the paperwork...

Like the OP though; when I got to the dealer, the salesman I'd spoken to 30 minutes earlier said that they'd sold the one that I'd come to see. They tried to sell me on a Ralliart Lancer instead... nope.

Luckily I'd scouted out the last of the narrowbody WRXs before I left. There were 2 new hatches in the entire state of Florida. One was 10 miles away from the first dealer. The second was the color that I wanted, but a four hour drive away. I needed to sign the paperwork that day, so I went to the closer dealer and walked away with a 2010 WRX hatch with 6 miles on the clock.

Ten years and about 180k miles later, I still have it. Commuted ~30 miles each way in Miami traffic to work for years and never really had any major issues. It's many years paid off and I've been working from home for years now, so it's basically just fun for me now. If anything breaks and I need to get somewhere I can either use my wife's car, or worst case grab a rental.

I've gone back and forth over the years on selling it to buy an STI, but I've pretty much abandoned that thought. I know everything there is to know about the history of my car. I can tell you every smart or stupid thing I've done to the car. Not to mention the idea of a car payment is repulsive. At this point I'm resigned to keeping it forever.

A few years ago, I spun a bearing and went the full built w/ upgraded turbo route. 2021 is primed for a lot more changes too. Not trying to maintain warranty or hopes of any resale value, I feel liberated. FMIC is half way installed as we speak. Have a bunch of other stupid ideas that I need to sort through too before I know how far this goes...

Get around 35 on my impreza with good condition. High 20s city driving.

Lol i think about my story regularly...~18/19 i had heard a lot of stories about subarus and how awesome they were...was dailying a civic/crx/mr2 (yes i had a lot of cars...all super cheap and either stock or slow and modified lol) i remember going to honda one day and saw they had a white wrx with a pink hks sticker that covered both entire sides of the car...i asked to test drive where i was told due to it being modified and very fast i couldn't but the salesman would be able to take me for a drive...i did it and said i would come back later. Later i came with a girl and we did the same thing, this time the salesman let me take a shot in the driverseat, he had been showing me his "racing skills" and how he drove his DSM...he was definitely afraid of shattering his transmission. I said this is how you launch, I relined it, dropped the clutch went 0-80 in 2 trailer house lengths (we were in some neighborhood and had good view of them as they flew by lol) thankfully both the girl and the salesman wore their brown pants that day lol. We took it back, let it cool down and i opened the hood to see if i could recognize what it had...the only thing i recognized was an hks ssqv (circa 04 so was a early model) and vowed to have that bov on my cars that were turbo charged. We left and i came back later with my mom to try to talk her into buying it so i wouldn't buy something that would kill me, she eventually got the salesman to show her other cars where we opted to leave instead of getting a new car. A year or so later, bored, and with some random girl, decided would be cool to go test drive cars and blow time that way...ended up at a Subaru dealer and they had a brand new STI on the showroom floor...tried for about 2 hours to look at cars and just wanted to drive the STI...they wanted my payslips so i told them how much i was pulling at my current job, i told them and they said had to wait for manager to come back to see if they would let me test drive the STI...girl and i went back to her place to watch movies, they ended up calling me a lot to try to get me to buy the STI, I had her make up excuses till the salesman stopped calling...over the years raced a lot of vehicles and that wrx really stuck in my mind as to how fast it was, heard all the heartache of people blowing motors, headgaskets, etc and once in a while saw a wrx that caught my interest but not enough to push me over the edge. ~06 found a sideswiped wrx automatic that the body shop wanted an offer, i was afraid to offend so i walked away. ~09 caught the itch of getting a new car went through rx8, civic, 240sx-3, 350z, another rx8 and checked subarus website...there was a promo for a 2010 SE model that looked like i could afford it! Called a few dealerships near me and nothing for delivery dates for a while...i waited a year and was browsing autotrader and low and behold a local dealership had a 2010 SE brand new and in WRB! Best color imo for a Subaru! I called them, verified it hadn't been sold and that i would like to come check it out. I took gf at the time with me to look at it and it was amazing, the hatch option was perfect, the color, there were random people taking pictures of it(including me), so i started talking to the salesman to see what we would need to get it. He disappeared for a while and while we waited we looked at the options catalogue for what to have put on before we accepted delivery of it. The salesman eventually returned and told us that due to shipping and receiving paint damage they had to repaint the car which would take a while but meant we need to make an offer on the car and he would go back to his sales manager to verify if it was a good offer. I told him i would pay sticker price to take it home as is as the paint damage it had would occur just driving it home. He told me no can do for warranty purposes, so i offered 30k where he turned around and disappeared again for a while. He came back and said our offer was accepted, we got our paperwork done over the next several hours and our down payment as well as setting up financing. He told us we would expect to be contacted when the car was done being repainted and we shook hands and went home...over the next ~60-70 days i called every 3-5 days to check status and finally was told it was done! We drove to get it, drove to a buddies work down the street to take him for a drive and were hard driving it to try to impress him, of course being a 3-10 mile engine boost didn't kick in very well but was still fun, he noticed the mileage and had thought it had 30k miles on it, told me to not drive it hard anymore and properly break it in. We drove it home, parked it in the garage took some pictures of it. Unfortunately over the next 1k miles the foglight covers kept coming off...i drove 2x back to the dealer to have them put them back on when the 2nd time for some reason i noticed that the frame rail was bent...bad like 45 degrees bad...i don't know how the bumper stayed on straight now but i told them, you guys sold me a used car, make it right...the salesman basically told me off so i left and went to another local Subaru dealer to ask if they could offer any assistance, the said no as i did not buy the car from them. I called Subaru corporate shared my story with them, they offered to send me a new owner kit (iirc, a lunch cooler, umbrella, watch, pen, lanyard, hat) i told them that was barely anything for what my car has. I asked for a manager who told me off, so i realized i was going to get no help there...i went to another dealership locally to see about trading it in, afterall a brand new car (visually) should be worth something, turned out they were owned by the same owner of the Subaru dealership i initially bought the car from so they weren't going to do anything with it at all! I drove back to the initial dealership and told them i was not happy with the car, they said due to miles and wear and tear on the vehicle (had also curbed 2 of the rims) that they would take it back and only charge me 10k...i happened to have that at the moment so i said sure, im done with this car and don't want this headache and walked away from Subaru...built several cars again over the years and ~8 years later bought a used 09 hatch from a honda dealer so i wouldn't have to deal with Subaru and have been enjoying it since! another WRB hatch!!!!

I had a 2010 Ram 2500 Cummins (fully loaded) and a Pontiac G8 GT when we separated in 2016. While we were together we were hunting/camping a lot so the truck was nice and the Pontiac had replaced my Camaro when my daughter was born 3 years prior. I have always had sports cars/trucks and didn't want to let having a kid stop that, so with the a 6.0l and 4 doors the G8 was a great option. Wife didn't want the truck when we separated so I kept it, but with a $600 a month truck payment I wasn't going to survive.

I needed 4 doors with a lower monthly payment and wanted a warranty so I didn't have any large unexpected car expenditures. I looked into another truck and Chevy's version of the G8, a Chevy SS (its a model, not just a package), but the payments would have been high and resale on an almost base model truck would have been crap. This led me to the STi. One day I was talking to my brother who had a GD STi years ago, which I liked, so he suggested taking a test drive in a new one. He went with me the next day and I took my first and only (so far) Subi home that night.

Ironically I voided the warranty at 12k miles by going Cobb stage 2 and have never looked back. I've had my ups and downs with the car (mostly ups) but I feel like its a part of my family now. I don't know that I'll keep it forever but it will be a sad day if I ever have to get rid of it.

I spent a lot of time watching rally cars, touring cars, and playing Gran Turismo A-Spec. When I started driving I wanted a turbo car but couldn't afford one so I bought a 2nd generation Integra. I dreamed of owning a turbo wagon, and really wanted AWD since I was an avid snowboarder.

After I got a full time job and moved to Seattle my Integra went through 2 transmissions in a few months. The first was my fault, the second was a chunk of concrete from a construction site punching a hole in the transmission case. Either way, I was tired of putting money into my Integra. It was leaking water from the door seals, burning oil, slow as hell, and time for a change. I loved it, but I wanted something better.

I realized I could qualify for a loan if my mom co-signed, so I set a budget and went shopping. I wanted a WRX bad and found basically my dream car at an Audi dealership. 2002 WRX wagon in blue, with a leather interior. It had 127,000 miles on it (in 2008) and was unmodified aside from audio and wheels, seemed to me that the high miles indicated a commuter car and I figured the dude probably traded up for an Audi. I don't even think I haggled on price. $11,000 and I had myself my dream car.

I still have it 13 years later. I've put another 100,000 miles on it and really enjoy wrenching on it and tinkering. After putting it through hell and dealing with the consequences it's now simply a weekend car and quite a bit more raw than the stock daily driver I started with. Man is it fun to drive, it's like a time machine for me back to my early days of driving. The smell, sounds, feel, size, etc all remind me of the glory days. LoL

When my wife needed a new car in 2014 we bought a Forester XT. We lived in up-state New York and got 8 feet of snow every winter, so a Subaru was a no brainer. I talked her into the turbo 100,000 miles later and that has also been a really good car.

My family took care of getting it, and it was a nice choice! With so many options out there, I could have not found my car if no one helped me look. It was a ~2003 Outback, blue-green color.

I was studying abroad in Japan. One of my fellow students dropped out of the university we were studying at for an IT job on a local US military base. It was basically a job offer too good to refuse for him at the time. He bought an V-Limited bugeye to go with the job, having always wanted an STI. He let me drive it around a parking lot when he picked me up to drop me off at the airport when my study was up. I joked that when I come back to Japan for work, I would buy the car from him and end up owning it some day. Basically a year later and that's exactly what happened. He needed to get rid of the car because he was going back to school and had to change his visa from SOFA to a student visa, and student visa holders aren't allowed driver's licenses.

Im not really sure, I just kinda went full send and up and sold my 19 tacoma I just paid off, cause it was BORING AF. Before that I had a 16 Mustang GT I traded in for the truck, that was a mistake. Well maybe not as it turns out but still.

Our first Subaru basically happened because our son had been going through some rough times and it was looking like he was going to need a car. The plan was to let him have the 2001 Maxima and get a new car for my wife. We would keep the Mustang (my DD) and the 1995 Mazda 626 as a spare car for whoever might need it on a temporary basis.

We were both in our early 60's at the time, but we'd always bought cars toward the upper end of performance and handling for the segment we were shopping in. And like all the rest, the 2010 shopping was strictly limited to cars that offered a manual transmission and at least decent power. Yup, family cars and all. Funny how the time it takes to settle on one or two cars takes less time when there are fewer to choose from, and a visit to the Philadelphia Auto Show in early 2010 solidified what was the leading candidate.

That's how our 2010 LGT came about.


We got 9 years out of the LGT, and truth be told we'd have probably gotten another Legacy in 2019 if it had still been available with the stick-shift. But even at 70-ish, we were both completely unwilling to give up the stick-shift and go automatic (let alone CVT). Shopping for our WRX was about as easy as it gets, a test drive of the Premium trim didn't go so well based solely on seat comfort but the upgraded seating in the Limited was a winner. Even though the car has more technology in it than I'd ever use in two lifetimes.
