We loaded up the Suburban with a shooting table. Someone brought a seated clay thrower. We had about 6 people and probably 30+ guns. I brought a dead ink jet printer and some broken kids toys, and just blew lots of crap up. I brought a portable grill, we had burgers and some brews afterward. Overall a great afternoon. We then built a fire to the appease the gun gods and to get rid of our trash. |

The SP-01 tactical is hands down the best handgun I have ever shot. It's *incredibly* accurate, the trigger feels great, if a little heavy, but a nice clean break and it's extremely reliable. It comes with night sights standard, 18 rounds, and it's so nicely shaped I bet I could conceal it, too. I heard from a CZ buddy of mine that one of the world champion shooters picked up a CZ SP-01 tac, did a trigger job and sights, and was winning 1st place medals. The smaller P-01 is pure gold as well, about the same size as my XD Sub-compact, but with the added security of a DA trigger setup. Both feel very, very good in the hand and very solid overall. I'm probably going to drop in a lighter spring though- the gun is designed for NATO power 9mm loads, which is equivalent to a +P style load, so there is an opportunity to lower the recoil a bit more (it's already pretty good). |

I'm interested in getting a pistol. I've only fired shotguns and a .22 and that was years ago. It looks like it is pretty easy to get a CPL and I meet all the requirements for that. Where can I go to learn about what kind of pistol would be a good starter weapon for me to learn on?

Otheriwse, start off with a easy shooting 9mm, meaning something that's got a steel frame, or at least something full sized. The 1911 in .45 honestly isn't that hard to shoot. Noobs do better with it than the Glock because its recoil impulse is softer, and its trigger is smoother. 1911s require much more maintenance and know-how though... kinda like muscle cars vs. japanese cars. Glocks, USPs, M&Ps, and XDs are all nice guns, but they have lightweight plastic frames that are a bit harder for noobs to handle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysa50-plo48 Todd Jarret 5 min. instructional video with a ****LOAD of information. You'll prob have to watch 20 times to fully absorb all the information and apply it to yourself. http://www.youtube.com/user/shootingcoach Shooting Coach is really good too, and he breaks down the info into more managable chunks. Go to a store and get a feel for all the guns. Find which one fits your hand the best. Often a gun manufacturer keeps same grip across models, you may find one that you prefer. Then shoot the ones you like the feel of. Then get the largest caliber you feel comfortable shooting and doesn't seem heavy.

Honestly, I think the revolver in .357 is the best starter gun. Simple in design. And easier to use in practice. The long double action trigger pull is harder to master. But like learning to drive a manual versus an auto, once you learn the harder route, all things are easier. If you get a misfire, just pull the trigger again and go to the next round in the cylinder. First time to the range, I usually show people the ropes with the revolver with light .38 special rounds. If you can find them .38 target wadcutters are great. In a heavy frame .357, the wadcutter rounds hardly kick more than a .22. For new shooters, I like to load 5 rounds mixing in light .38 special rounds and full .357 magnum, once they've had a chance to fire a few dozen light loads. Then watch their sight picture when they drop the hammer on an empty chamber. |

For those interested in using a single stage press for reloading, I did a series of 5 reloading installments and one on case trimming (stickied at the top) on the Desert Eagle forum at: (the forum got kind of screwed up in the past few years)
http://thedeserteagle.yuku.com/forum...eaglefrm7.html I'm DepCannon on that forum. If I were to carry it would be my H&K P9S .45, but I don't. I mostly reload, plink, and blow up water jugs. I have a Desert Eagle .50AE and a S&W 500 Magnum Hunter for that. I also have a Bushmaster Carbon 15 Type 97 pistol for fun. For those who aren't familiar here's a cartridge comparison between a S&W 500 Magnum, a .50AE, a .45 ACP, a 9mm, and a .22 LR... I personally like gun related pictures in gun related threads... |

Most ranges won't let me shoot there, most of my round are FMJ, and have pretty good loads behind them. And if I accidently fire one of my AP rounds, it would go through the back stop and the wall behind it. This is one of the reasons for my property in central Oregan, way out in the middle of no way, plenty of room to crank off rounds at any distance. |

Ok, it looks like there is a good amount of interest in a range day. If those of you who are interested could PM me the following info:
Name: Phone #: E-Mail: Location: What days work for you: Range suggestions: Guns you will bring: Ammo calibers for said guns: If you do not feel like disclosing your list of firearms, please at least disclose the caliber. That way for those of us who don't have guns, or want to shoot other guns, can know what ammo to buy ahead of time. For range suggestions, if you could link a website for them, it would be much appreciated. We will probably have a decently large group, and I'd like to let them know ahead of time. I'm in. I don't get my pistol till the 18th though, so any time after that. I could come before, I just wouldn't be bringing any weapons to the party. During the week is best for me since I'm out of work.
I'm dying to shoot an AR-15. I've only shot AK's before (at least in terms of rifles). I'll bring a couple hundred rounds of 5.56 ammo to play with if someone agrees to give me a go. |

The N4 is pretty insane in it's accuracy. Despite being a chrome lined, thin, and relatively short barrel it's similiarly accurate compared to the Denny GTS Operator /w DD LITE rail and TA-31F ACOG I sold right before the elections. Last edited by Roy Lin; 02-12-2009 at 01:44 PM. |

I think final plans should be finalized through pm's with vecdran since he started the thread. That way we can cut down on the people that aren't posting, who would like to just "come and watch". Sounds like quite a few people would like to do this, who have firearms. I think we try and keep this as organized and safe as possible. See you guys soon hopefully.

I want that gun you posted. It looks exactly like what I want out of an AR - flat top, ACOG scope, railing system. I need someone to educate me on the things because I have no idea what a good brand is. The guy I got my pistol from has a cougar arms AR-15 that looks pretty good to me for $900. I have no idea if that's a good price for that rifle or not* *Given current prices |

Now's not a good time to be getting into the firearms hobby. But it's now or never, Also, that pictured rifle i had uses a Daniel Defense LITE rail that's no longer in production. All those lightening holes are awesome, but eat up large amounts of machine shop time. That barrel is limited production, and uses overboring to produce better than better accuracy than other chrome lined barrels. If i had waited just 3 months more to sell... I'd be very suspicious of a $900 AR-15. If it's a Vulcan/Hesse/Blackthorne, it's basically the same as a Ford Pinto waiting to blow up. NO JOKE. Cheap AR-15s like DPMS, Model 1 Sales, are ok... they are like 98% as good as premium brands such as Colt, LMT, Noveske. When you buy premium, you buy extra features than only people in LE/MIL really need, like 4150 CMV barrel steel (better resistance to high heat), 1/7 twist (for firing specialized ammo), M4 feedramps (for better feeding during fast firing/full auto). If you wanted an premium AR-15 for cheap, i could help you build one from parts. You'll however, want to get a stripped lower receiver ASAP. $160 is the going market price on a RRA/Stag/Double Star lower receiver from internet dealers. Factor in $25 for a FFL background check/transfer fee from a local dealer, and compare to local prices. |

I'm in. I just seriously know JACK about this stuff. I'd need someone to point me to a link and say "buy this". Even though I'm out of work money is a non-issue for at least the next year so I could start investing immediately if I knew what to buy. Let's talk more at the meet. I could give you cash and have you buy the parts. I'm a reliable guy and I don't dick around (plenty of people in the area you can ask). I just don't want my ignorance to be an impediment to a good rifle and/or get ripped off. |

Would be glad to help you out with the world of black rifles. Right it just pays to have a lot of patience. Noveske's doesn't even taking orders, CMMG stopped giving production estimates, and LMT has a 16-20 week back order. RRA, which was always 12 months backordered () is probably at a 2 years + now, lol Basically you want to run the ring of reputable dealers on a daily basis and troll the black rifle websites, namely M4carbine and AR15. Signing up for e-mail notifications from BravoCompany also works. Whenever something goes in stock you have 30-60 minutes to buy before the scalpers clear it out. If you wanted a full featured rifle RIGHT NOW, i'd get the Daniel Defense M4 right this second. It's in stock at Rainier Arms, and they're in Auburn. Since they are a famous online dealer, they don't bother with, or have a storefront, but they are very friendly to locals, and can sell locally, do background checks, etc. Only prob is they have to charge sales tax. At $1600, the DD M4 isn't cheap. However, this rifle has all the premium features, and was spec'ed out by Larry Vickers, former Delta and the namesake of Vickers Tactical. I'd prob be able to build a similiar spec rifle for $1300-$1500, but would have to wait for some key parts. Remember that there is a $200 federal excise tax on complete rifles, vs. parts. If you wanted, I could do the buying for you, but i think it would be a better idea if you ran the circuit yourself, as I still have a day job PS: Larry Vickers now has a TV show, "Tactical Impact" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTw3Q-ZM_Nc |

Strangely I don't think $1600 is bad, but I'd rather pay around $900-1200 and buy 1000+ rounds to put through the thing to make sure I can use it effectively.
Seriously - let's talk at the meet. I don't need all the bells and whistles and I've got tons of patience and not a ton else to do. I want an accurate rifle that's easy to point and shoot. As mentioned I've had AK's and I know many love them, but I thought they were crap. I don't know enough about ammo to care about shooting specialty stuff. |
