I'm shocked that an automobile reviewer who got to test one behind the wheel and examine in the flesh...actually has the gall to think he knows better and give a favourable review of the car that a group of faceless internet car forum fanboys with zero experience with the car, armed with the best of speculative armchair knowledge

Internet fanboys, somebody email this guy and tell him his review is full of s***

I'm not sure the arguments here were about its performance, rather that it's a Lexus and they arent known for making performance cars, minus the IS-F which almost nobody knows about in the real world anyway.

You know Lexus is Toyota, so what is the point of that statement?

You're being distracted by the badge.

and I see IS-Fs all over the place on the road, so i'm not sure what that second point means either.

For example I saw one parked at a restaurant down the street from my place

I see a ton of IS-F's. They are definitely not uncommon, people know about them.

I have two issues with the IS-F, one is the ride quality, for 60k it shouldn't be that hard. This is understandable since Lexus has never made a really sporty suspension, so they didn't do it properly. Two is the 8 speed transmission, granted it gets good highway mileage, but 8 speeds is a bit much.

Like the dude who wrote that article, I'm wondering how this will go on the road.

Yes I know Lexus is Toyota. Guess what. No, lexus is not known as a sports/performance car maker. Great, you know about the IS-F and see them every now and then. Go out on the street. Ask a random person if they know what the IS-F is. They don't, the people that would buy this car do know what an IS-F is, hell I'd bet some of the people driving an IS-F only know it was expensive and thats why they bought it. Like the old women you see driving around in an M3. As stated before by many people that can afford the LF-A often buy a car because of the Badge.

It's ok though just keep spouting off about how great Toyota is in racing and how that translates directly over to Lexus in peoples minds.

So, Tim, what would Toyota/Lexus have to do in order to have your permission to make a $350k car?

Toyota is one of the top car manufacturer in the world.

I don't understand where people get the idea where just because the manufacturer don't build sports or "sporty" cars, means that they don't have the capability to.

I'm sorry I gotta say this, but people have to be retarded to think a company with such large resources and advance technology cannot build a proper sports car. It's all about business; their management did not think it was economically feasible and of their best interest to put their priority into sports car development.

Have people forgoten about these legends: Celica, Corolla, MR-2, Supra.

I wish Toyota would bring back cars like the Supra, Celica GT4, MR-2 Turbo.

there's no doubt that companies with experience make great performance cars (Ferrari, Lamborghini, Nissan, BMW....) And toyota has no experience with supercars or sports sedans, the two performance cars it currently makes, therefore, it is likely that they won't be very good. However, I do agree that it used to make great, cheap, light performace cars, which is why the FT-86 should be a great car.

What the hell are you talking about. I never said they couldn't make it. I never said it wasn't a good car. I was pointing out, in reference to the post I quoted, that few arguments were ever about the performance of the car. The main argument has been that it's a Lexus. Nice try though.

AAAAHHHH. I read that *entire* article and was really excited and at the bottom there was an ad for a Prius. I almost crapped myself, what a shame.

You say the badge is wrong. What would Lexus and Toyota have to do to make the badge "right"?

What the hell do you mean "nice try"? I'm asking a legitimate question. If the Lexus badge is currently so wrong for this car, what would Toyota have to do in order to make this OK to sell as a Lexus? Do they need to win an F1 title? Do they need to win 10? Do they need to offer a $100k sports car, then a $200k sports car? Do they need to pull some dead badge from history to slap on the front?

You tried to bend the argument to make it seem like I said this car was crap. I said no such thing, thats what the "Nice try" was for.

Toyota/Lexus are losing money. This is another money loser for them at this time. People are cross shopping much bigger name tags at this price. I doubt even 10% of these things will see a race track so the performance aspect at that level is relatively pointless. I still think they will have a hard time selling 500 of them.

I see you have put Nissan in the same sentence with Ferrari and Lamborghini. It would have been a different case 3 years ago. People were dying laughing at Nissan when they said their next GTR would compete against a Porsche.

Supercars isn't really as hard to make as people think. No name companies come out with supercars all the time; powerful engine, composite material, and racing technologies, pretty much the recipe. Toyota has some good racing history also like WRC, F1, and racing since the 2000GT.

In no way did I imply you were saying the performance is no good. You read into that yourself. I was specifically speaking to the branding.

I'm not sure what Toyota's financials have to do with this either. They still have a war-chest full of cash and if they feel they have X dollars to devote to this project, it shouldn't matter one lick if it is profitable. Companies spend money all the time on things (training, marketing, such) that doesn't show an obvious profit.

Toyota constantly gets accused of cutting "fun" cars while chasing the dollar. Here they've completed an exercise in engineering that pays no attention to profitability. They've made the first honest to god, purely Japanese supercar. If they feel that this can let them explore new technologies and do something special, largely on their dime, then **** yeah! Do it!

I'm an automotive engineer. This is the kind of project I'd kill to be on... versus one where you constantly have to play it safe to keep the product reliable and the profits healthy.
