thanks. so gas prices are decreasing, so i decided to do a 89 octane test since it is cheaper than 87 two months ago hear. if the price is only 4.76% (3.15 vs 3.30) more, but if i can get 3 more mpg or 8.33-10% more than it would be well worth it. but if it is 0-1 mpg increase then it wont be.

Even after the oil change, TSB updates and 6,000 miles so far I still get consistently lower numbers than others on here & it's not my driving. Tested against one of the others' car with the same trip & driving & it would probably show that. (On the other hand a Honda Civic pretty much consistently hits EPA numbers or exceeds them - the advertised numbers, not just the range)

I will say though that you should read what the EPA defines as a "city drive" because you'd be surprised that what most of us consider city driving doesn't fit into that definition.

Me too. I wish it was better but ah well... I'm done trying to figure it out & have accepted that my car falls on the lower end of those ranges. I still save a ton of gas $ over my last car even with less than ideal MPG so I'm still on the upside.

Even though my mpg will fall into the city range sometimes I could accept this average performance from the 2.5 FB engine which IMO living with the 2.0 is better choice. Nothing wrong with the 2.0 but it's gutless.

I just filled up yesterday, dash said 30.0 and my calculations were 29.9 seemed strange because the dash gauge has been about 10% prior to this. I wonder if the pump just clicked off early this time.

Anyway, I'm happy getting around 30mpg but was hoping for better. I think a lot of the problem was that I was beating the hwy epa estimate with my old car on my commute and with this car I'm not getting close. My car has a build date of 10/11 and I haven't tried getting the updates yet, but doesn't sound like people are too impressed in the long term with it...

I've had random tanks that are better or worse, most likely just the pump, it all averages out anyway!

I'm in the same boat, I'm satisfied with where my mpgs are at, but thought it would've done better. Solved the gas consumption issue by trading our merc c230 sport in (which wasn't too bad 4 cylinder supercharged got around 26-27 in the summer, 23 or so in winter...but God awful to drive in the winter!) for our new manual trans. fia* (promised I wouldn't say it again, hahaha), which, with both my wife and I driving it, has averaged just half an mpg shy of the highway estimate for that vehicle over 1200 miles. The subaru is now my commuter (120 miles/week) and bad weather/outdoorsy/hauling stuff car - 30mpg is great for a 2nd car that is infinitely practical.

I have about 800 miles on my car now (after owning it for three days!) and my commute to work was about 33 mpg (car indicated). That is pretty much double what I had from my V8 SUV (16.5 MPG), so I am very pleased. Driving is 80% 55mph back roads/highways and 20% small town, 17 miles total. At about halfway is where I saw the MPG climb back to the 29MPG range.

I don't find it gutless at all. It's nothing like the 1980 Corvette L82 I drove in high school but it's loads better than the '03 Civic I came from. After 4000 miles, I can't think of a single instance where my compact econo-hatch couldn't pass or merge or climb or entertain adequately. The civic was wanting probably 50% of the time.

Also, consider that many euro spec econo-hatches cars do 0-60 in like 11 or 12 seconds...

i agree: gutless is all a matter of perspective. coming from a 5spd 2000 Civic, i find the two cars are comparable in my daily driving although when driven hard, the Civic had a bit more get up and go. but i have driven my same generation civic in AT as well as the one that hemophilic refers to and those were a lot slower than my 2000 MT, so i agree: the Impreza is more than good enough.

other cars that i have driven recently that have a lot less "oomph" than the Impreza include the Toyota Prius (no duh) and the Nissan Versa i had as a rental. the Imprez has less guts than the latest Civic (which has no soul except for the better pickup) and about the same as the Hyundai Elantra i test drove.

I would like the direct injected 2.5 with 170 hp and TQ and still get 27/36. In fact thats what the 14 Forester will get and most likely and the next OB/LEG (2015)? I believe the next WRX should get a turbo 2.0 and 1.6 with direct injection

I think Subaru was wise in further splitting the Impreza from the WRX in terms of power and fuel economy.

Ten years ago, the WRX and Impreza had the exact same MPG figures and the only thing that made the Impreza cheaper to fuel was that it didn't require premium. There was a 62 horsepower difference between the two.

The fast car wasn't that fast and the economy car wasn't economical.

Today, the two cars have swapped displacements. The Impreza gets 9-11 MPG more than the WRX on the highway, and the horsepower gap widens to 117.

Yes, we'd all like 265 HP @ 36 MPG, but it's not in the cards right now. I'd even take 130 horses if it meant better fuel economy. If you're going to complain about the Impreza's power, just go and buy a WRX (and then complain about the fuel economy).

I was wondering why Subaru didn't make their new 2.0i engine with direct injection. Seems like a lot of the new eco engines are direct injected.

The engine is the BRZ is direct injected. The technology was taken from Toyota.

good points. it allows people to set their priorities. i may offend some of you, but if i could get the same road handling and feel with a FWD impreza 2.0i*, and eeked out a few more MPGs, i would have bought it, too.

but i made the compromise. i knew going in that this car wouldn't deliver the mileage of a Honda Civic, but the compromises they made in recent generations to the road feel/handling were too many for me to buy another one at the gain of a few MPGs (3mpg on paper, but more now, i am thinking in real world numbers).

i'm happy with my purchase. i think the current impreza offers a nice blend of mileage, driveability (connection to the road), and the option to handle less than perfect road conditions (ie, snow and rain which aren't as big a deal for this CA driver but i'm glad to have this as bonus)

* there is at least some suggestion that this would be possible since the AWD on the CVT is reportedly at a default 90/10 F/R split.

*scratches head* Why do you want a FWD Impreza? There are so many other excellent FWD cars in the same segment that fulfill the requirements. Honestly, AWD is one of the top reasons the Impreza is so nice.

The BRZ guys can be the guinea pigs for DI. Looking at other makes, the cost and inconvenience of HPFP replacement seems to be negating the economy advantage.

Subaru doesn't have the resources to bring a new technology like DI to an all new volume selling car car. There is a huge risk if they screwed that up.

i'm not saying that i want FWD impreza, per se. but if they made one that had the same driving dynamics that i feel behind the AWD impreza and could achieve 40mpg EPA ratings, i might give it a whirl.

of course, this is the sort of theoretical argument that probably is nonsensical because impreza drives and handles the way it does because it is AWD

anyway, i probably made a nonsensical comment and post, so feel free to ignore me and continue on with the more useful discussions.

I think Subaru needs to be careful so that not to repeat the La Costa disaster.

La Costa used to be a somewhat exclusive brand; then a decision was made to make it appeal more to the mainstream buyers. It worked short term, as shoppers jumped on suddenly affordable La Costa merchandize; but in the long term it destroyed the brand.

Subaru in North America right now has reputation for quality and all-wheel drive. The recent decision to make the brand more appealing to wider audience appears to be working; sales have jumped. Just got to be really careful now, and not turn Subaru into Mitsubishi. LOL

EXACTLY. DI is significantly new tech. The imp is NA with a few less cutting edge efficiency tweaks. I waffled about a golf/Jetta sportwagen diesel option for a while. My bro inlaw got the golf and it's nice. I was ultimately turned off by the known failure rate of the diesel hpfp, vws lackluster reliability history, and purchase price.
I'm still not confident about DI in general.

1700 miles on Limited Sedan. Hand calculated average since taking delivery is 35 MPG. Best tank was 37 MPG and worst was 33 MPG. About half of the mileage was highway, the other half rural 2 lane with minimal stop lights. Computer initially reported 1 to 2 MPG better than actual, but this has improved with the last 2 fill ups. Perhaps it re-calibrates with experience? The car is definitely capable of attaining EPA highway MPG. Not so sure city MPG can be attained if constantly in big city traffic. Running regular 87 octane fuel. I am very, very happy with the car.

The mpg gauge most definitely doesn't learn! Last tank for me it said 31.5, calculated mpg was 28.6.

It can't read your fuel receipts so how could it learn? You have to scale it manually using a dealer configuration mode. The details should be somewhere in this thread.

I don't think that works for the US models, people have tried it with no avail.
