Thumbs up Here's the info on the new project car!

Dale Teague (Teague's Auto) and I have worked out a deal to make my 98GT his new project Legacy. Dale is selling his 95 Legacy to make progress on his Impreza project. He didn't want to leave the Legacy crowd out in the cold, especially since he and I feel that the Legacy can be as much a performance car as the Impreza. The key here is performance. I will be looking at styling mods for the car. However, the main challenge at hand is to make the Legacy a performer. We will be installing various suspension, brake and power modifications. For now the modifications will be within the allowances for SCCA's STS class, which happens to be what class I currently run. Possibly in the not to distant future, the car will get some mods that will move it into Street Prepared class. And hopefully ending up in Street Mod.(One day )

I hope that I will be able to gain info that will help all Legacy (Outbacks too!) owners. So please don't feel that only the crowd with 98GT's will benefit from this.

That said, I will give a update after this weekend's autocross of what I am running on the car now, and what changes I will make next. In the meantime, I'm going to try to get some photo's to Dale to put on his site. Feel free to hit me with questions, if I don't know the answer, I'll find out!

Thanks for you input and support!

Sounds fun!

I think it's only fitting that he's putting the truest US Subaru Turbo engine is his Impreza.

Keep us up to date on the additions. Even though most of the stuff doesn't apply to my engine, some of the suspension stuff will.

I could never have run in STS, it's Street Mod for me, cause i can't stand holding a good engine back!

Hello! Me again. I ran the car this past Sunday at CCR-SCCA's "All Fools" event. I finished first in STS out of 5 cars with over a second margin. There were 6 Subaru's at the event, 5 Impreza's and my Legacy. From what I recall of the times, I finished @2-2.5 seconds faster than any of the Impreza's.

So what's all this braging about? These cars are performers! Yes, driving and autocrossing experience makes a difference, but the car can handle just as well as the Impreza.

What's the current setup? 98GT, Quicksiler Metallic (silver's faster), Eibach Pro-Kit, KYB GR2's, Whiteline Adj. Rear Sway Bar (set to 24mm), Whiteline Front Strut Tower Brace, Whiteline Front & Rear Solid End-Links, Kartboy Short Shifter, Apex-i S-AFC, Custom Cone Intake & Universal Muffler. I just started running on new tires as well. They are 205/50/15, Bridgestone RE730's, mounted on alloy's from an older sport sedan. They difference in diameter is @1.7" smaller than stock.

What's next? In the next few weeks I'll be changing the brake booster to a single stage unit. Hopefully providing more pedal feel. We're also checking into a front sway bar. I will be working on cleaning up my Intake, adding a Kartboy MAF adapter in place of my custom made unit. I will also be installing a 2.5" pipe from the cat to the universal muffler. And I will also try to find the time and place to G-tech some and try to tune the AFC. In the further off future, I'm going to switch to the Whiteline Select springs and see how they compare to the Eibach's.

Steven, Now we all know you've been driving that baby hard in competition for a while , and I, for one, wouldn't presume to be able to keep up! Keep the info coming!
Did you say you had stainless brake lines on it already? Still waiting on mine from Cobb. I'd think they would make a little more diff in feel under hard use like yours. Real curious to see what the Select Springs do for the car too! Great job Brother!

I don't have stainless lines yet. That was one of the things I meant to add to the soon list.

Thumbs up

More updates:

Last week I had the 2.5" exhaust done. The car sounds so much better! I also had the front y pipe replaced due to a small exhaust leak which may have been causing some rough idle and an occasional CE light. Dale & I may have also located another possiblilty for the CE light and rough idle problem. When the dealer replaced the engine just less than a year ago, they didn't attach the wiring to the rear o2 sensor to it's proper mounting point were it goes over the transmission mount, so it has rubbed the wires a little. It also looks as if they have hit the rear o2 sensor on the upper heat shield when they lowered the exhaust. I'm going to get this checked this Friday. Hopefully it will check bad and that will be the end of the nasty orange light. Until I start playing with the S-AFC anyway.

Next week we will be replacing the clutch in preperation for the pro-solo in Virgina the first weekend of May. The clutch was replaced when they did the engine, but it never has been quite right. I should have complained more right after it was done, I guess I'm just a little too pasive sometimes. Anyway, we will be replacing the clutch with a stock unit, since I will contiune to run Street Touring class. I just hope that a fresh clutch will get me off the line at the pro better than the current unit. When I went to the pro-solo in Ft. Myers in Febuary, I couldn't get the car to launch. It just smoked the clutch if I tried to get it going quickly. I'm going to try and put the stainless lines on as well. I'm also planning to switch to the single stage brake booster while installing the clutch. The project car is not on Dale's site yet. However, after the autocross this weekend I should have some photo's for him to post.

Betcha won't miss the smell of flaming clutch! Be sure to share anything interesting about the stainless line install. Too bad you're changing out the Booster at the same time, as the difference will be harder to discern. Ah well, progress must go on!

Let me know how the Single Stage Booster install goes!! Which master cylinder are you going to use? I've been debating this mod for a while now. No matter what mods are done to the braking system the pedal feel just isn't there.

Great to see someone else is very avid about modding their Legacy and actually using it. Not to be flaming anyone out there, but to prove the Legacy is a performer you must prove it in competition!! Ala; Track Day's & AutoX. Nothing like a turbo and suspension to supprise S4's & M3's...

Talking

Sorry I haven't been around for a bit. The clutch install went very smoothly. I found some things the dealership didn't do correctly when they put the motor and clutch in last year. The bellhousing had a chip out of it, the lower mounting bolt for the starter was missing, and the clutch must not have been aligned properly, because the throwout bearing was twisted sideways on the shaft. I've had a talk with them about this, and they are planning to comensate in some way. The car gets going great now! I took the time to replace the front lower ball joints, which seemed to help tighten things back up in the front. Just as a reminder, my car has almost 80,000 miles. We also installed a Weapon R intake. After I drove one of the local's Impreza with one, I was hooked! It is LOUD! We didn't install the stainless brake lines, as Dale sold the last set a couple of days earlier. But that will come in the near future. Glen - I actually thought about doing the brake lines first then the booster, as you mentioned. I think I will install them at seperate times so I can see the difference. Last Sunday at one of our local autocrosses, I finshed 4th by PAX out of @155 cars! I was bummed about the prelude that just barely beat me. Then I recieved an e-mail that I had finshed 4th by PAX, and cheered up right away! I can't wait to run against the prelude again though, when he doesn't have an almost 75yard straight. I'll be at another local event this Sunday and then the Pro-Solo in Virgina next weekend. I'll post some results, and any changes I make between now and then!

Mate, go for the brakelines and DOT 4 or Super 4 fluid (sorry, I don't know if that's std in US cars already).

You can't go wrong!

Glad to see someone campaigning the Legacy.

BTW, the link ends you mention, are they stabilizer to suspension links?

yeah! that's sweet man!

I can't wait to hear about the Whiteline select springs... I need 'something' to go with my AGX's sitting in the closet, and the RE730's that are next to them (which will go on when the threat of snow is really over)

keep up the good work

Hey guys,

you bet the legacy GT can perform ... went to autocross class last Saturday and event on Sunday ... my first ... my instructor turned a very quick time in my vehicle ... full stock .. running Cooper Lifeliner Classic Allseason ... that was only beaten by other instructors driving non-stock vehicles and two miata's ...

I had fun and learned a lot ... my best lap was 2 seconds off my instructor's time ...

I've ordered the DMS gold two weeks ago ... hopefully they will be here next week ... that and an adjustable rear sway bar 18-22 mm ... have new 16 X 7 team dynamic wheels ... still reviewing and looking at tires ... either the SO 2 poles or Cooper ZHP 01 /Avon ZZ1 ..same tire ..

once I get the suspension upgrades completed .. then on to the brakes and a few goodies to boost hp to vicinity of 200 ...

so lead on Steven ...

It's me again! I finally have a free moment since I got back from Virgina this past weekend. The Pro-Solo was a blast! I had more fun than the Florida event in Febuary and we had 15 entries in STS. I was very happy Sunday afternoon when I finished in 5th place. I was extremely happy to finish as close to Eric K's times as I did. Not that I have anything against him, but I was driving to beat him at this event. I know what an outstanding driver he is, and it allowed me to set a very challenging goal for myself.
Here are the results for STS:

The times listed are fastest Left and Right course times combined.

Street Touring S Drivers: 15
1p 27 - Richard West - 68.703 - 99 Subaru Impreza - DMS/Elite

2p 136 - Perry Aidelbaum - 69.320 - 95 Acura Integra GS - A & H Moto

3p 68 - Eric Kriemelmeyer - 70.100 - 99 Subaru Impreza - Kartboy Kustoms

4p 168 - Eric Carman - 70.234 - 99 Subaru Impreza - Kartboy Kustoms

5p 66 - Steven Rankins - 70.585 - 98 Subaru Legacy - Teagues Auto

6p 73 - Kelley Nelson - 70.679 - 98 Subaru Impreza - Rallispec

7p 19 - Will Conklin - 71.322 - 00 Subaru Impreza - Project No Cones

8p 72 - George Perinis - 71.346 93 - Nissan - Sentra SE Neon Racing

9p 92 - Matt Nicholson - 72.072 - 92 Nissan - Sentra SE - No Gum Racing

10p 49 - Grady Wood Jr. - 72.144 - 93 Honda Prelude Dk - Radial Tir

11p 47 - Court Cormier - 72.150 - 98 Dodge Neon White

12p 149 - Vince Bly - 72.220 - 93 Honda Prelude Bl - Radial Tir

13p 36 - Patrick Goss - 72.588 - 95 Acura Integra GS - A & H Moto

14p 99 - Chris Perera - 74.670 - 95 Acura Integra Bl - Rosen Auto

15p 61 - Cris Thomas - 75.274 - 95 Saturn SC2 Black

So, know that I've totaly whipped my car, I'll be installing a new steering rack this Saturday. While doing the install I will be upgrading the steering rack mounting bushings to the Whiteline polyurethane bushings. This will sort of be a test to see if it's a worthwhile mod. Even though I will be replacing them while I have the rack out, it's quite possible that they can be installed fairly easily, without removing the rack. This I will check, before removing the rack. I will hopefull get the single stage brake booster in as well. Unfortunatly the Stainless Brake Lines will have to wait, as money is tight.

Steven

Steve, what steering rack are you putting in the Leg? I understand that there are some different lock to lock options for at least the Impreza. The Euro/JDM have a different steering ratio (I believe that is the right term) than the N.AM market.

Just a normal factory rack. I really wanted a quick ratio rack. But as the car is a daily driver and there are little bumps all over the roads here in NC, I will do this to keep myself out of the trees.

The gearing's 16.5 on JDM BE/BH5s...hope your racks are faster!! Oh for the 15 of the STi, and the 13.5 of the RA is delish!!

Unfortunately they don't seem to fit the Legacy...

Keep on fighting!

AnotherB4 hmmmm, lets see, I really dont think that SOA would put a quicker steering rack into N.Am. Soobs. Considering that they put the 13mm rear sway bar on Legacy L and the 2.5RS because they did not want to risk possible oversteer situations. If anything I would believe that the U.S. gets a slower ratio steering. Ford does the same thing with the Euro spec Focus vs the American one. Then they try and sell special editions in the States that are nothing more than Euro spec base cars? Go figure the American populus as a whole are a buch of sissy lemmings that cant drive their way out of a paper bag.
