Q: Expected clutch life
I've noticed that my (stock) clutch is showing the initial signs of slipping. When accellerating onto the freeway, the clutch is slipping a bit in fifth (accellerating fairly hard, shift to fifth, release the clutch, the rpms die down slowly -- as opposed to dropping near immediately to match the wheel speed vs. engine speed). Or, I guess the better explanation, is that the RPMs don't really go down (or up) for a short bit while the car accellerates.
I've only really noticed it in fifth. How long would you expect a clutch to go from initial signs of slippage to full-fledged, copious, and dangerous amounts of slippage? ( I'm driving a 50 mi/day commute, almost entirely freeway, and I drive somewhat aggressively while on the freeways.) TIA, - Eric Lil' Red '98 2.5 GT Wagon - Pics

Sounds like a slipping clutch... Does it start to slip if you are already in gear and mash the gas?? That is when the clutch is pretty much done... If you are mostly on the freeway and not driving fast and hard and shifting alot then you should be good for a little wile longer, but you'll probably need a clutch before spring...

BTW...I've got 175,000 miles on my 98 RS with the original clutch. Mostly highway driving, lots of backroad romping, 10 or 11 open track days, no clutch dumps & no ham-fisted shifting. Regards, Chris |

Yeah... I'm a little flummoxed by it. This is my third car. Put about 70K miles on my first car. Put 120K on my second. This one only has 52K on it, and looks like it'll be the first to need a clutch replaced.
I think that I probably ride the clutch a bit longer in my Subie than I did in the Acura, the Horomni, or even the Beemer in an effort to allay the clutch shudder. Sigh. Thanks. - Eric Lil' Red '98 2.5 GT Wagon - Pics |

Yup... Imagine my surprise when this hit my inbox.
1st clutch was indeed very much toast (if, when the car is in gear, you can accelerate the engine w/o accelerating the car, your clutch is slipping and needs replacement). 2nd clutch (a heavy duty) made it to ~100k. It shuddered like a madman for a long time. My clutch fork broke, and when the mechanic took a look at the clutch he made all sorts of cluck-cluck noises and yelling about mechanics installing the clutches without using the right tools and the problems it causes. The third clutch (stock) is going strong at 135K (I know! 16+ year old car and only 135k?!). Just wanted to pipe in here and make a recommendation that you have any clutch work done by a Subie specialist. That is, a mechanic who specializes in Subies, and not "Radio Flyer -- Scooby Specialist". |
