no syncro reverse!! I did it again!!
Well for the 2nd time I tried to engage reverse while already rolling backwards. It was an inclined spot at a gas station. I didn't realize I did it until I was leaving. "I was like wait a second, it didn't grind, but damn why did I do that?!" I tested it at home the same situation, and apparently if you're going really slow it doesn't grind, it just kind of clunks into reverse. (like a poorly rev matched no clutch shift) I'm going to do my hardest not to try to engage reverse while already moving, but having done this twice it makes me super paranoid that I just took lives off my transmission.
Having only done this a couple times and super low rpm I don't think this would cause any damage (or at least as bad as the manual makes it sound) it should be fine right? The engineers surely built the transmission to take a little abuse? Does anyone else occasionally do this? This is either the 2nd or 3rd time and I'm worried reverse is gonna be screwed up long before it should be. Its only grinded once, the other time it just kind of went in without me hearing anything. But due to other cars and traffic it must have made a nasty clunk.

Reverse is not a helical gear in your model; it's a spur gear and there is no synchro. Just stop doing it, how hard is it to come to a complete stop and put the knob in reverse. And I've done this on my CRV a bunch of times, nothing broke.

You're probably screwed, I would just go ahead and swap the transmission tomorrow just to be safe.
Also, do you make sure to warm up your car for 8000 seconds before driving in the morning? Plus, make sure to NEVER go WOT under 6000rpm if you're in any gear above first or your engine will immediately throw a rod into the passenger compartment. |

first off, your motor is running, so technically it is easier on it to engage while moving slowly because at idle rpm it is matched at probably 2 or 3 mph, making a synchro unnecessary.
when you are stopped it is needed. also, reverse being spur gears doesn't have anything to do with a synchro. Reverse is synchronized. |

because I said it exactly like that.... taking out your anger over the internet rather than the people you should be today?
I've done it 3 time because I was used to a VW that had a sychroed reverse. Its a habit I thought I broke. I was just curious if anyone else occasionally doesn't realize they're slightly moving and hits reverse. You don't have to make people feel like they never want to come back to the forum. I see people do dumb crap all the time, I read people doing some crap all the time, but I don't speak to them as if I hated their guts so much I wish they were dead. Which is the way you came off. |

i didn't really say i wish you were dead, just kinda told you to stop doing it because you know, it's bad m'kay i did exactly what you did on my CRV 5 speed at least a dozen times. reverse is not synchronized in the older vehicles, that's why you hear the grind. take 2 spur gears, spin them at different RPM and try to mate them, grind. they aren't made of adamantium and they can obviously break. which is why i'm saying just come to a complete stop before going into reverse. |

but you gotta admit, you've done it a couple times yourself. The last thing I want to do is hurt something brand new, thats mechanical (I do autocad drawings)and is my own.

Seems like a lot of the german cars have a snchronized reverse gear. I've been to a lot of bimmer forums where guys do have synchroed reverse gears in their getrags. |

In the situation I was in, it was kind of easy to do what I did. I was rolling back on purpose because I knew I was on a hill. Then a car behind me leaving a pump honked, rather than stopping I popped it into reverse to show them my reversing lights being like "yo I was moving first". I didn't realize what I had done til I had pulled off. I think I slowed a little and thats why I didn't hear the grind.
The other time it happened I was reversing, thought I had gone far enough, removed it from gear, realized I had not, and tried to put it back into the gear without stopping. And in this situation a few people have said, "really, it grinded?". |

Patient (lifting arm): Doctor, it hurts when I do this.
Doctor: Don't do that. Nobody is really pounding on you. Just stop. |

yeah again, i'm lazy and did it many times going down my driveway with my old car but that grinding noise will force you to break the habit quick, i don't do it with my 2015 wrx even though i know i safely can. i still tend to put the car into 1st while moving backwards sometimes which is a hard habit to break.
and no man you didn't damage anything but repeatedly doing that could potentially shave a tooth. even in the owner's manual they emphasize to come to a full stop before going into reverse, that i'm sure of. |

More likely, he's got the clutch in, so the input shaft isn't seeing even idle RPM. |

From what i remember... reverse is never synchro'd.... becuase you are 99% of the time at a dead stop when shifting into it (pretty sure the manual even says to stop totally). You need (makes life easier) synchros when shifting into a gear while moving... thats why they exist...
