Default Flashing CEL light with hesitation

Have been noticing that my 1999 Outback Sport 2.2L has been hesitating during acceleration, especially at low speed/RPMs lately. Today, I was shifting between 2nd and 3rd gear, the car shuddered like it was about to stall, then the CEL light was flashing. I know that usually means death, but the car survived and I limped home. It happened a few other times on the drive in the same situation - in between gears when upshifting (low RPMs). Any thoughts on this?
Stock Subaru - absolutely no mods whatsoever. Changed the spark plugs and wires about 5 years ago when I had a similar problem - wondering if it might be the same or something else.

Follow-up: I've determined that the stuttering/hesitation occurs right around 2200 rpm - which happens to be right at a gear change point for me. Above/below that range, the engine runs fine; or seems to anyway. Went back to AZ and they pulled a 0302 misfire code - seems only to be cylinder 2, no others. Will check plugs and wires today, but wondered if anyone else had any thoughts.

So here's a curveball.

I have a S202 powertrain, dash, everything.

My car throws one, SINGLE CEL flash at WOT just above 7500 rpm.

Misfire? Knock? Whatcha think people?

Thanks in advance! Still scouring NASIOC/IWSTI, but jdm ecus aren't as common as we know they should be.

Code: Single Strobe-like flash

What error code is it? Evn if the light is off it should be atored as a pending cel....
My guess is overboosting or somethig similar... Especially if its been upgraded or tuned at all.

Hey everyone I have an 05 sti,
arias pistons, eagle rods, dp, cai, cbe, txs mbc, aps fmic.....

pulled the trans and did a clutch and rear main seal replacement about three weeks ago. car has been driving great, haven't really been boosting much, as i am trying to break in the clutch. I hit boost today and the intercooler hose popped off- back of the intake manifold at the throttle body (the one that always pops off). When I put it back on, I had a CEL. Still drove fine, no limp mode or anything. I unplugged the battery, cleared the CEL. Everything was fine the rest of the day today, I was just cruising along again and the CEL turned back on, and the speedo isn't working now. I've read others havent been able to rev past 4500 prms either, havent revved that high but I will check it out. I just unplugged the battery again, but obviously the CEL is coming on for a reason. I don't have an AP or scan tool, so that will have to wait until tomorow, but anyone else have a similar situation? any ideas what it could be?

I'll read the code and see what it says. I'm hoping it will say _something_. Car hasn't really been updated, just running american 93 octane instead of japanese go juice.

Thanks!

Hey guys, I had the P0172 and the P0031 codes. About 4 weeks ago I replaced the O2 sensor in the header pipe, then cleared the CEL. No light since. I waited a while before posting results to make sure it didn't pop up again. Thanks for the help!

Do it up!
If it were knocking the ecu should have dropped timing until it didnt do it, even if it has to ruin thenperformance of your car.
Whats your setup? Turbo? Boost controller? Mods?

Do you have the code and not know what it means? Or not have it at all?
Thats your first step.

I have the CEL from hell.
P0102- mass or volume air flow circuit low input
P0138- o2 sensor circuit high voltage.

Cleaned maf and light hasn't come back. Also fixed a somewhat exposed yet intact maf wire.

O2 sensor (next to passenger wheel) was replaced with a brand new denso unit. However lights come back on. Usually after the morning daily commute.

Suggestions?

2004 STi running custom AP tune. (car was fine waaaaay after tune btw)

Fix: hopefully a 02 sensor and new intake will fix the problem im not too familiar with what it takes to get to the 02 sensor I know it's in the up stream and you can remove the tow and walla. But, is their any thing major I may want to double check, I want to try new intake clean the maf and maybe do a seafoam run? Oxidize the 02 sensor and hopefully that will fix it.

Mods:helix high flow catted dp
Cobb cat back
Cobb AP stage 2 on 93oct.

I've also noticed on warm start up she's want s to cut. (Rpms drop, and stalls) I've herd its throttle body affiliated Is that accurate? Or could it be the 02 sensor as well

Fyi intake filter is very dirty (shame on me for letting it get so bad) probably bc I do too much off roading

Code: Cylinder #2 misfire
Car: 2001 2.5 RS
Mileage:197,xxx

Ever since i bought my car the CEL for Cylinder 2 misfire has been on.
When i reset it it usually goes away for awhile; Sometimes 3 days sometimes a week. I work graveyard so when i go to start my car after work it comes on after a little while while warming up during idle. I have searched alot of times online for the problem and I have replaced the following:

-Coilpack
-Oem Wires
-Ngk Spark plugs
-New Injector in Cylinder #2

Things left that i have read from some different places on the web:
Could be the knock sensor going bad.
Could be a faulty battery not giving enough power to the injectors

The battery is from 2008 i believe and i havent touched the knock sensor.

Any help will be greatly appriciated. Thanks!

battery is getting a little old.

perhaps change fuel filter and even check fuel pressure.

SeaFoam treatment might be helpful if there's some carbon deposits.

So it could be the battery?

Have a receipt for Fuel filter was replaced in 2011 so it could use another?

I put fuel injector cleaner in it last month to try to fix it as well

SeaFoam will more directly address carbon in the combustion chambers.

as for the battery, I have had spurious codes set twice due to a bad cell in a battery but honestly, you seem to have a 'real' problem since the car shakes so, unlikely to be the battery. But, if you have a 2008 battery, it is getting old-ish.

There are many things this 'could' be. But if you aren't able to diagnose it, just do the cheapest/easiest DIY stuff. Like testing fuel pressure, checking cylinder compression, seafoam treatment, etc. do a search here and on youtube for seafoam treatment. You introduce it thru a vacuum line, or buy the spray can with the U shaped nozzle and use the intake.

Maybe someone here can suggest a shop if you post your city, if these easy things don't find a problem.

You seem to have addressed the injector, wire, coil and plug issues. About the only other 'cylinder specific' issue is compression. maybe some carbon is preventing a valve from closing completely. or, maybe you have some other issue leading to low compression. (broken ring/ringland, gummed-up oil control ring, ???)

Fix for problem: Fuel Pressure Regulator

On my way to St. Louis for a road trip from Kansas City. Car dies, rpms drop and car won't start... Car acts like it has a dead battery. Replaced battery, no luck. Get a tow all the way back to KC got a deal $450 for the hassle. Get the car to a shop. Car turns over and fires but won't start.

MAF/IAT is the first thing we look at. Get it cleaned, no luck again. Replace sensor and nothing still.

Check if I'm getting fuel pre-filter. Good on that. Check after filter. Gas is brown and dirty as all hell. Replace fuel filter. Turns over a lot faster and fires but no start still.

Check fuel pressure and I'm getting 80 psi??? Fuel pressure regulator was faulty and the computer wasn't letting it start. Replace that and I'm good to go!

Problem had nothing to do with the car not starting. But the P0102 and P0113 disappeared after replacing sensor. P0171 still there because of the Cobb cold air intake. Hope this helps someone!!!

Code: P1507 - Idle Control System Malfunction (Fail Safe)
2002 Subaru Outback Limited sedan

Fixed by: Cleaning the IACV.

My mom has a 2002 Outback which she wanted seafoamed. So I seafoamed the car earlier, and after the seafoam the CEL came on. Checked it and it came back as a P1507. So I did a quick search on here and found out that, among many other problems, it could be a dirty IACV. Cleaned the IACV with alcohol and q tips, and used some MAF cleaner that I had lying around. Seemed to fix the problem for now, no more CEL and the car is running very smooth, idle is great now. I refered to this thread: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1872438, big thanks to SteveKoz for doing this write up back in 09!

Default P1502

I want to buy a 2000 2.5rs. Owner has swapped a 6spd 07sti tranny in it and claims its throws the p1502 code occasionally. He says possible reasons may be because the 6th gear lacks air pressure to the computer. Any other thoughts? Obviously the normal computer doesn't account for a sixth gear, would adding an ecu help or access port? Please pm me replies

The first two codes came on this morning on the way to work and the last one came on on the way home from class. Things that have recently (in months time) happened: a hose from the bpv to the intake manifold discovered(god knows how long it was disconnected) was reconnected which took out code P0137(I'll still get it time to time), I was back to full boost, I was happy. Now that it's cold (in the teens) I think I threw the first two codes because of the cold.

My crazy theory is: Because I have a good feeling the hose from bpv was disconnected for a least a year the car was "used to" all the seasons and now that I've reconnected that hose and coming to the first winter since then... the car is freaking the heck out.
Or I have a crap tune and need a new one.

I've also gone back to the stage 2 ots map just so I can rule that out.

Help lol.

Edit 1/27/13:

Still on the stage 2 ots map
Threw two codes -
p0137
p2096- This is a new one for me. Post catalyst fuel trim system too lean (Bank 1)

Today, I installed a Cobb SF intake, and mapped up, went to the store to try out the new intake and the car was working fine up until right before I made it to the store which is a mile away. by the time I got to the store, it was progressively worse. and on the way home, my car stalled twice. It seemed as if it wasn't getting air. It was a worse version of a boost leak I had a while back on my intercooler's hose. I am just giving you that description for a visual. Anyway, the only thing I could find on the net was that the MAF wire was loos, but I checked that. The MAF sensor itself seems to be halfway in the airbox, and halfway out. Is the MAF wiring that sensitive? Hmm, just not sure, new to all the DIY modding. It has been fun, and up until now, I have been running my WRX on Cobb's OTS Stage 2 Map without any problem ever. ANy Help would be appreciated. I tried searching on the forums, both Cobbs, and here. Thanks,

Spiro

I am throwing 4 codes currently, according to the kid at autozone. I have already replaced the o2 sensor with a Denso unit. I figured, get the common one taken care of first. Are these possibly related and all caused by the same issue? ...or do I just have to replace 4 separate sensors? Any input is appreciated.

I originally had a P0174 which is Front Bank 02 Sensor. So i replaced the front 02 sensor and that cleared the code. 3 weeks later the P0171 came on and had no idea why since they are somewhat related codes. The code comes on every other day at normal driving conditions and I have just been clearing it. I have cleaned my MAF, checked for vacuum leaks (none), went stock intake, which did nothing, then back to aftermarket. im Effed.
Help please.

My car is such a pain in the ass.
Code: P0420, Catalyst system efficiency below threshold
2002 Subaru Impreza WRX (Bone stock)
Mileage: ~149,000.

Fix: None as of yet. Though Some of my mechanic friends tell me that it is the rear o2 that needs to be replaced. Took it to get inspected and talked to the mechanic there, told me it could be the rear o2, the down pipe going bad, or a hole in the exhaust system. There are currently two small hole right behind the midpipe, and was told that could be it. Not quite sure. Hopefully getting to my friends lift in the spring to get that sealed so its at least a bit more quiet.
I've had the car for a little over a year now, and I've had this problem since I got it.

Threw an evap code before winter came (P1443 Evaporative emission control system vent control function problem, I believe) had that part replaced when I got an alignment.

Any input for the 0420 code would be greatly appreciated. Still searching around for that as well.

cel seems to come and go symptoms of the first time were cold temps accompanied with low gas. I put better gas in filled her up code went away. Now its back I and has failed the emissions inspection got the cat code and an evap. Mechanic said they tried to cycle codes evap cleared cat did not. Car is up to date on all recalls according to Subaru's website. I have been unable to drive the car much since I bought it so I have not fully tested gas mileage but when I have driven it she seemed to be guzzling a little more than I would expect. I am in serious need of help as I am not mechanically inclined and not in a position to deal out a grand to fix this thing. Is there an easy clear cut fix for this ?

Unfortunately, I don't know how the car drove before the CEL's since I just bought it. It seems to be driving fine, though.
There is no specific o2 sensor codes, although I am certain they haven't been replaced. That is probably the best thing to do, right? As for replacing them, I heard it's best to get an OEM front o2 sensor, but the rear could be a cheaper 3rd party one, right?

As for the other 2 codes, they seem to be unrelated to the Cat efficiency. I know that the knock sensors can be easily replaced, but what's up with p1442? As far as I know my fuel gauge is accurate.

I have another 13 months before going up for NJ inspection (emissions only). I know that I should get on the P0420 as soon as possible to prevent cat damage, but what about the other 2 codes?
