Default Please help determine problem, engine? turbo?

Hey guys, I was driving my 02 WRX around yesterday. I let her heat up to normal engine temp, and while i was out having a little fun, the engine made this weird squeak or squeal or something in 2nd and 3rd at high rpms. I'm a little concerned, although the car seems to be running fine when I'm not demanding a lot from the engine. As soon as it squeaked, I shift out of 2nd into third, hit the gas and it was fine until about 5k, and it squeaked again. The noise sounds really horrible... Any ideas. Thanks, i appreciate it!

nope, no mods. This has happen once before yesterday, after it happened again i decided it wasn't just a one time thing. It wasn't much of a squeak or a squeal i suppose, but it was a horrible noise that i could hear over my radio and i had my windows down... its kind of hard to describe, kind of like grinding gears, but i wasn't in mid shift. anything you think i might be i'd appreciate. Thanks!

Also, after is "squealed" why did you continue to beat on it?

When my car makes a funny noise i cease the action that is causing the said issue........that is just me though.

a/c was not on, and i don't really know what the noise is caused by, therefore, i'm not too sure whether the noise is actually harming the car, although i'm assuming that it can't be that good

pop the hood and rev it that high. see if it happens again. almost sounds like an accessory belt.

I vote for an exhaust gasket that is getting burnt through and is vibrating at high RPMs under engine load. Most likely with out a leek as of yet.

If it happens again and you dont have these symptoms: Its most likely a exhaust gasket on its way out

-Loosing power
-The steering shudders/feel notchy for a sec ect...
-Head lights-interior lights dim

If its any of the above symptoms its a belt.

If you cant find anything out of the above symptoms then you most likely will not know till it becomes more persistent.

IMO if you have over 100k on the car and its all stock with original exhaust gaskets the $75 for the five gaskets is worth the time to do it yourself......P-n-P your header while its off
