Default Stock Intake delete???????

Is it wise to take the front air scoop and resonator box leaving the stock box in the engine compartment sucking air directly from the fender well. Its cool air, no water gets in there, and if it does, its high enough, vacuum cant pull it up there.. I was also just goin to throw in a K&N high Flow filter. But would this cause me to run rich? Im pretty sure it doesnt matter cause its just taking everything out before the filter and the MAF Sensor is still goin to be getting the same air flow depending on throttle position. Basically loosing unnecessary air travel, more noise though, saving plastic, and $$$. Why Not????????

You fail at reading. You will not make power on an intake unless the stock intake system was a restriction in the first place. It all boils down to your power level and the airflow your are moving...

Default Don't get wrapped around HP

I just want to point out two things here. Unibombers' very first FAQ input said it perfectly. "The primary purpose of an aftermarket intake is to increase the amount of air flow the engine receives". Now focus on the word receives. The next great input came from djviper a whopping 61 posts later! "what it will do however is speed up your spool up and sharpen throttle responce". The faster an engine starts getting air, the faster it can start working. So... if your concern is only for HP numbers or dyno bragging rights, don't bother, because as stated the numbers will not be there. But the numbers don't tell the whole story. You will get benefits like easier/better take off, the bog on a rolling start (for you stop'n'go sign people like me) will be gone, hills where you may have had to downshift and get into higher revs can be taken smoothly in the higher gear. There ARE benefits if you look for a system designed well for the car. BTW, mine is an 03 WRX with the SPT w/heat shield.

Or you could remove the resonator and get the same effect for free while still getting lower intake temps than any shortram with heat sheild...........

What about 2008s? I'm hearing a lot of different stuff about them. A/F seem fine and intakes produce 11 to 20 hp.

08s are no different, without PROOF vs. "seem fine", using an intake is d u m b.

Ultimate Racing posted dyno results and said their A/F ratio was well within normal levels.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1360742

Also, some members on various forums have good A/F ratio with their intakes on '08s. That's why I'm kind of wary of what to believe or not. I have an CAI for my 08, but it isn't on the car now, due to my confusion.

I have spoken with daryll from Ultimate Racing about this and gone in depth. Their CAI was designed to optimize the stock A/F, and with little turbulance as well. I have a buddy with an 08 hatch, and he installed the Ultimate Racing CAI, and his A/F ratio was well within norm after a couple days of driving it.

I beleive they also said in that post that they ran the car with NO TUNE and didnt have any problems.

of course getting a tune would definitly help, but it doesnt look like (from the company and other owners) that there would be any problem. There is better things you can purchase for the money, but if you already own it, or want the PSH noise, you will be fine.

Already own it, will throw it on purely for the sake of seeing if my MPG increases.

+1 Thanks for the great info. I'll stick with my stock intake, it's a good design.

I really don't think this will make a difference. getting 1mpg more from a ~$150 mod means you won't see a cost benefit for over 15,000 miles, not including cleaning kits.

I'm getting about 3MPG more in the city (could be my rims). Midrange power is lost, but high end power is a kick in the arse. I don't think it's "faster", but it definitely rides smoother than normal. Don't feel any anomalies. Will see what happens over the next few days and on the highway. Will have my tuner plug an AF gauge on the car when I take it in for springs and see the data for myself!

I read unabombers intake FAQ.. It seems understandable since i know the object is to free up air. All my buddies have been telling me that my car will be running to lean because of that intake. I have posted on the newbie FAQ plus a photo of my car's engine bay since I purchased the car last week. I have the option to take it off or just leave it. Since I still got the stock intake. I know there was a list on the first page which intakes do not affect the car. The problem is I do not know what brand that intake is on the engine until I get my car delivered.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1593628

Edit: I forgot to post but the TurboXS intake install has a dead link

Default Intake + tune question?

When you say Stock Intake is good for 350 hp do you mean whp?

I have spt intake with heatshield on stage 2 05 wrx. Thinking of going fp big 16g with ebay TMIC and supporting mods. Hoping for 290-300 whp (which will be around 370-380 crank hp i think). Do you think Mead Engineering will want me to put the stock intake back on before the tune?
