Default Anybody know how to get rid of unwanted birds?

By birds, I speak of the large birds. Two big "fishing" birds like a Blue Heron or something have taken up a temporary residence in my grandparent's backyard. They've started eating the fish, and they even broke a piece of glass my grandfather had put over the fishpond to keep them out. I think he got wire mesh and put over it this morning, but they want them gone. Anybody how to get rid of those little bastards?

Border Collie or Australian Cattle Dog should do the trick.

Heh... our part-Poodle/part-Shihtzu sure as hell doesn't like them. My grandfather said the dog wouldn't even go back into the yard on her own... he had to carry her back there.

Not sure if a Herion would be scared of a owl or not, but you could get a decoy to put by the pond.

Herons are pretty easily spooked. We have them at the park we go to, and they'll bolt if you're within 50 yds of them.

They sell these things to keep birds away but... might bother the neighbors. Basically it runs off a propane tank and makes a gun like bang every few minutes.

Sometimes a simple windmill will do the trick or a scarecrow.

It's called a birdscare machine. Air force uses them to keep birds away from runways.

I'm fairly sure it is illegal to shoot them... pretty sure it's illegal to fire a gun in the city limits here too. I've already covered the issue of the dog

My roomate and I had little black birds that would attack us when we walked outside. So he bought a pellet gun and we shot them. They stopped attacking for some odd reason...
or get one of these

Usually is illegal anywhere in the city limits. The trick is just not to get caught. I took out a rooster in my neighborhood last week that was getting annoying.

Have you guys HEARD one of those things? It's not something you'd want to use in a city. Or a neighborhood. Or anywhere near your house.

Near where I grew up, there was a farmer down by the river who decided that he wanted his own artificial lake. Every year, his fields would flood and he wanted to waterski whenever he wanted on his own property. So he proceeded to prep the ground and start lowering the level of his field so he could get himself a nice shallow depth, enough that he could ski on it.

Not very far away was a swamp which the Audubon Society had bought up and made into a nature preserve, primarily because of an Osprey which had made his home on a dead snag near the roadway.

Well, the AS caught wind of his little lake plan and opposed it with reasons of polution of messing with the water table. AS won the little battle and the farmer was prohibited from creating his lake. The farmer was pissed.

For his revenge, he got one of those little bad boys. He put this on the far edge of his field...the closest he could do the wild life sanctuary. And he ran it. Day and night. Night and day. For MONTHS. We lived about half a mile away and we could hear it very very clearly. It sounded like someone was lighting m-350s every 30 seconds or so a ways away. Keep in mind also that this isn't a flat and open half mile; I'm talking up a hill, through a dense forest and over a swampland a river.

Airport, yes. Backyard, no.
