There isn't really a RIGHT way to do the idlers.

Personally I like to align the pass side, keep it all tight over on the bottom to the driver's side.

I'll then move the crank pulley sprocket about a tooth off and align everything on the pass up top, then move the sprocket back into timing place to make everything tight aside from where the tensioner goes. Bolt the tensioner in with a bit of pressure on the belt, pull the grenade pin, and turn it a few turns to see if it's still on the marks.

Some people like to do it where the bottom idler is loose and pushed on last. Just depends.

Also, top tip: chip bag holders work wonders for holding the belt on the driver's side cam gears.

Where are you at? I may be able to help tomorrow if I get a few things done in the Impreza (street pad swap, exhaust manifold swap, making sure the battery doesn't puke up anymore acid, etc) and it wants to drive with the roasted to frigg clutch.

I’m in Clarkston, close to Pine Knob. Might have to try some of those tips. Thanks.

Or at least have some advice on the order to install the idlers/tensioner? I don’t remember the belt being so tight when I put this last one on.

I view this video as a refresher when doing belts.

That made it way easier. So for future reference, lower idler goes on after belt. Plus thanks for the “chip clip” clamp tip to whoever said that.

Glad you got it sorted and it's good to go for another 100k. Sorry I didn't see the plea for help or I would have tried to make time. I've sort of been expecting a text message or call since you asked for help a few months ago . You live too close for us to not have a beer sometime. You mountain bike at all? Been cycling Bald Mountain and Addison Oaks on Wednesdays after work.

Also...holy **** why did no one come up with the chip clip idea a decade ago when I was in the midst of my Subaru-ness and doing multiple timing belt swaps!? So simple yet so amazingly helpful. I was always in need of extra hands to hold things so they didn't slip.

Beers? Yes! I’m still biking but it’s more casual on the path at Independence Oaks either dragging along the kid on the trail-a-bike or towing the baby in the trailer. I would love to do a little more hard-core ride but Wednesday’s we have swim class.

How are your weekends? When I can I try to fix in a weekend ride too. Usually I head over to Island Lake for those and ride with my uncle.

I am not going to make it. Clarkston has their annual "Taste of Clarkston" event from 12-6 on Sunday. Beer tent, live music, and food vendors lining both sides of main street.

Also, for those who might want to join me at the race track, I'm signed up with 3 Balls Racing for Grattan on the 29th.

Suburban has got to be the WORST place to get parts from.

They're the type of dudes to ask you for a VIN when you go in for an oil filter.

Hi all, new here in the AA area. I just parted ways with my Jeep and picked up a '19 STI, so far I'm really enjoying it!

The Jeep I sold to get the Subie:

Gotcha. I've sold my WRX and have a '18 Crosstrek now, but I'm tossing around the idea of getting back into a WRX or STI.

The real question is, when are you lifting the STI to do some rock crawling like your Jeep did?

Traded in my 2016 Fiesta ST and picked up a very slightly used 2018 WRX base.

Pics when I get around to it.

I'm hoping I can make it out to Cars and Coffee... assuming I can get my 6 speed swap done Friday night.
