Default Ford's small SUVs get new four-cylinder engine

Quote:
Ford is giving its small sport/utility vehicles--the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner--a new four-cylinder engine and an upgraded V6, along with an optional six-speed automatic transmission for the 2009 model. The goal: Boost fuel economy while maintaining performance.

The new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is rated at 171 hp, an 11-percent increase compared with the 2.3-liter engine it replaces. Ford says variable valve timing for the intake valves and electronic throttle control headline the list of improvements.

When the four-cylinder engine is paired with a new, optional six-speed transmission, fuel economy remains 20 mpg in the city and gains 2 mpg to 28 mpg on the highway, compared with last year's four-cylinder and four-speed pairing.

The optional 3.0-liter V6 gets a variable valve timing system that uses camshaft torque to move the hydraulic fluid that changes the valve opening profile.

Output grows to 240 hp--40 more than last year's 3.0-liter V6. The V6/six-speed automatic powertrain gets 18 mpg city/26 mpg highway ratings, slightly bettering the 18 mpg/24 mpg figures from 2008.

The Escape Hybrid also uses the new four-cylinder engine, which helps boost fuel economy 1 mpg in highway driving to 31 mpg. It still is rated at 34 mpg in city driving.

This would've been outright awesome if they had a 260+ hp model with the Eco-boost 4-cylinder engine. I would've strongly considered it over the 2009 Forester XT. It would've made 20+ hp over the V6, been more fuel efficient, lighter, and quicker. I'd venture to say that it would be a relatively inexpensive SUV (under $30K) that would've been capible and fun to drive.
