IT folks help me out... Tape Backup Question
I had to get a replacement cleaning tape for a VS160 tape drive. I rarely ever use this particular type of tape drive so I'm not real familiar with it. But anyway, I ordered this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16840109315 Clearly labelled as a "BHXHC-02 DLT VS160 Cleaning Tape". So UPS just delivered it and on the package it is labelled "BHXHC-02 DLT VS80 Cleaning Tape". Compatibility listed is "DLT1, DLT VS80". It doesn't say VS160 anywhere on it, but the part number matches up with the NewEgg listing. Will this VS80 cartridge clean a VS160 drive? I don't have the drive in front of me to test it with; it's about 15 miles away and I'm not gonna drive there if I know it won't work. Is a VS160 drive actually just an 80 uncompressed/160 compressed drive?

I'd bet it works. I don't use DLT, but for our LTO and DDS drives, the cleaning tape is the same no matter how big the physical capacity of the drive is. The data tapes are different capacities but reside in the same physical form factor. In other words, I have one cleaning tape for my LTO1,2,3 drives and my DDS-4, DAT72 etc.

Yeah I usually deal with DDS and they are generally interchangeable... but not familiar with DLT stuff at all. Maybe I'll just drive out there and try it.

It should be fine. The cleaning tapes really just need to fit the form factor...the 40/80/160 stuff is simply the amount of data the normal tapes hold.

I also would say yes.
Taken from the quantum website: "Quantum DLT VS160 tape drives read the following media: DLTtape VS1 (MR-V1MQN-01), also reads DLTtape IV (THXKD-02) cartridge written on DLT 1 and DLT VS80 drives" If it reads stuff from the VS80 drive, I dont see why the cleaning tape wouldnt work. Im also pretty certain the VS160 is just compressed with a faster transfer rate, but dont quote me on it. |

Hmm.. I may go try then. While googling it I found conflicting info on another site:
but that was HP and they could be wrong (or maybe that just applies to HP drives?) |
