Question 20% MPG improvement with a vehicle wrap?

http://www.fastskinz.com/index.html

Quote:
Why the FastSkinz™ Technology Works:

Vehicle drag occurs when the air pressure distribution around a vehicle changes for positive to negative. This occurs, when the high-pressure flow of air on the leading edge (i.e. the front) of a vehicle is cancelled out by the low pressure flow of air on trailing edge (i.e. the back) of the vehicle. Once oncoming air hits the vehicle, the flowfield is created and the boundary layer deemed "attached." Immediately thereafter, the air within the boundary layer is subjected to adverse air pressure. As the flowfield moves along the vehicle in the "attached" state, adverse air pressure increases according to the APG of the vehicle. This increasing adverse air pressure causes the flowfield to slow down and lose momentum. When the flowfield loses all momentum it "separates." Following the "point of separation" the ideal pressure distribution surrounding the vehicle is abated and a "low pressure wake" forms. Once this low pressure wake is formed the forces of drag sets in and the vehicle begins to slow.
Since drag on a vehicle begins to form at the "point of separation," prolonging the amount of time that the flowfield is "attached" we can delay the point at which drag is formed and thus reduce the overall drag of any vehicle would normally encounter. A smooth surfaced vehicle in motion will generally have a Re below the critical marker of Re 3x105. To reduce that drag associated with Re below the critical market; one could increase the speed of the vehicle so as to raise the Re or one could trip the boundary layer by altering the smooth surface of the vehicle. Because increasing speed of a vehicle is not a safe or particle method "tripping" the boundary layer is the most viable option and this is exactly what FastSkinz™ does.

20% with a treated vinyl wrap? I would love to see some hard proof.....

if you vary the conditions enough (car, gear, speed, wind, air pressure, temperature, humidity) and find that optimum condition where the aero drag is most prominent and reducing it is most beneficial I'm sure you could get some data that says this is true.

If you do enough testing you can prove almost anything though, even if its nonesense. I'm sure you agree.

no, if you do enough testing you can probably find SOME EVIDENCE for just about anything. Big difference.

yeah you know what i meant. the difference between "prove" and "find evidence of" is in the beholder

if a drug company tests their drugs on people for ten years and says its OK and causes no harm.

some might call this proof

some might not

Those swimsuits are amazing and they obviously have an impact, but that is drag in the water, I would think it is a lot difference then drag in the air. When it comes to cars I would think the overall shape of the car has a much greater effect on coefficient of drag then a smooth surface. Also, how much smoother can this stuff be then the surface of a car already is ?

I saw the company testing this on a TV science show about a month ago and it seemed interesting ... basically they are taking the technology behind golf balls and trying to apply it to the areodynamics of a car. The skin wasn't smooth. It had dimples (very small) all over the place to chnage how the air travels around the car

They tested it on a 911 first with the skin and then without. The lap times and MPG were significantly lower, but I didn't fully trust the results because they weren't using an independant driver.

I wasn't fully convinced, but it did sound very interesting ... I hope it does work. It would be a major breakthrough

Yeah, it's too much. Black deserves brighter wheels. A car like that V could pull off some really nice 3-piece BBS chrome wheels, even.

You never know. But the shape has to be the determining/limiting factor. A shark vs a brick....not tough to figure out the drag.

They make it sound like you can decrease your aero drag by speeding up. With logic that sound, I think I'll pass on the wrap.

I never understood that. People make these high-MPG modifications to their cars but they start with **** like a 93 Prelude or something. Hooray, you can make your car look like a Roddenberry abortion and get almost as much MPG as a more efficient car from the get-go?

If the wrap covers all those fake ass vent holes it could work!

I initially thought black chrome would look really good on a wrapped car, but now I am not so sure....
