Aluminum Foil Intake Heat Shield
Anyone every consider using aluminum foil (shiny side out) and some duct tape around their intake? Of course it wouldn't be anything very sturdy, but it would be super light weight, cheap as hail, customizable, and extremely easy to make. Think I'll go outside and make one. = )

Are you talking about the aluminum duct tape, or the adhesive canvas type?

I used regular canvas backed duct tape. Yeah, melting is a concern. From what I saw online it can take up to 100 degrees C.
Made an aluminum foil and duct tape heat shield for my intake. The only thing the duct tape does is wrap around the plastic ram air piece on the Cobb SF intake and hold the foil down. The foil is what actually covers and boxes off the intake from the engines heat. It's awesome. Not the best looker, but dramatically improved heat reduction around the intake. I took the car for a 20 min drive to chipotle, through stop and go and freeway driving, parked, got food, and made the same return trip. I popped the hood when I got home and everything held up perfectly. I was thinking about using a laser cooking thermometer to test the surface of the intake, but after sticking my hand under the foil and feeling the metal clamp that holds the filter together, I can feel a huge difference in temps. Before it was really hot, now it's barely warm. I'm pretty pleased for a diy part made out of household items for under $5. I would suggest this to anyone who isn't too concerned with looks but wants the performance and has a wife or a gf that b!tches at them about spending money on the car. = p I'll monitor the duct tape through out the week and let you know how it holds up. I kept the stock ram air intake and my home made gp moto elbow. I used duct tape on the end of the elbow to flow air directly up into the foil box and air intake. Like I said above, so far everything is holding up nicely. |
