Rob - nice work! This is a fantastic tip and a super easy fix.

FYI, I found that I didn't have to lever my engine at all. Simply turning the coil upside down and inserting allowed it to get in the head, then flipped it right-side up. Super easy.
Me too - exactly as above on my '93. Long day install for me, but in the end all went well and easily worth the time as an upgrade. If anyone wants a spare set of tails for the stock coils let me know and I will send them out.

Sorry I don't know what JB weld is. I have half a tube of the epoxy left if you want it. I got it at canadian tire... surely you can find some.

I think JB weld is conductive, so that would be a bad idea. I think high temp RTV would work fine. The point is to provide corrosion protection as well as some mechanical support/strain relief. The "high-temp" epoxy that I used as all but completely dripped out over the years.

I used RTV on mine and a few others I've done for people. It's been fine.

Hey guys,

I noticed today when I pulled my plugs that the 2002 coil only goes about 1/2 inch over the spark plug when installed, but when everything is out the entire porcelain portion of the spark plug fits in the coil. I also noticed that when I look in the 2002 coil all I see is a spring -- is there supposed to be a metal jacket?

I'm almost certain that the metal spring in the coil is about 1/2 inch away from the top of the spark plug when installed and it must be arc'ing or something. the car runs decent but I'm still worried this isn't correct.

Anyone else notice this or am I just being paranoid?

You'd notice under boost if there were any ignition issues and there have been countless people that have done the same conversion.

Shoot, I'd sell my good set of g coilpacks with an ignitor for that price.
Also question for the knowlegeables, was there a newer coilpack being made? Mine have the same part#, but the ends are a nice soft rubber, much less prone to aging. I ended up switching to newer style since I had them laying around thinking mine would go bad fairly soon.

It's not the removable rubber bit that ages. It's the plastic it covers that ages and cracks. Any pics of the coils you use now so that we can tell the difference?

Ej22T PCM and harness, Early Liberty RS EJ20G.

Will this coil conversion work on this setup? Can the factory PCM support coil on plug?

Thanks

William

I'll be doing this shortly. Does it have to be WRX coilpacks, or are they a common part across the suby lineup?

Gday,

Crikey, I just did this conversion with FK0186 second hand plugs. $130 aus total. 93 rs Legacy with 98 sti ej20

What a freaking huge improvement and fix. I have not been able to use WOT for about a year now and have spent a few grand on useless mechanics working around what is proven to be a coil/coil wiring issue.

Basically my car ran ok(ish) on part throttle; however any more and especially on boost it hesitated, and stopped suddenly if foot was left down. The plugs were also very carbon fouled.

Thanks so much for the right up with such clear information and pictures. I am a novice at anything other than basic servicing and i managed it ok.

My only suggestion especially for novices like me is to use a multimeter to check the continuity from each trigger on the coils to the appropriate merged wires from igniter for that cylinder. My existing wiring colours was all over the place so the continuity test after just twisting the wires together confirmed the correct cylinder triggers.

had a set of spare 02 wrx coil packs and harness after swapping my 1995 RWD impreza coupe so I did this conversion on my 1992 WRX. The car was breaking up bad under boost and was gross to drive. Pulled out the factory coil packs, all were good but the rubber boots were destroyed so I figured I might as well do the conversion. Car now pulls VERY hard and no more breaking up under boost!!! Thanks a lot for this thread!

I have read every post on these 12 pages but I can't seem to figure out if ALL coil packs for the 2.0L WRX from 2002-2006 work?

They seem to have different part numbers and parts catalogs seem to say the 2005 are not compatible with the 2002.

I just finished the conversion on my 1992 WRX,car fired right up and seemed pretty good.
However I'm getting a battery symbol in my dash. I'm certain I didn't touch anything around the alternator or battery circuit. did this happen to anyone?

I have the metal igniter, does the black wire need to be grounded?

Well I figured why my battery symbol was lit...

most of the positive power cabling from the alternator to the + side of the battery was eaten by what I beleive is sulfuric acid that came from the battery(or a previous battery)

the copper of the conductors of each 4 white wires were liked dried out and friable as well as covered with white powder that smelled of sulfur.

one of the wire goin into the main fuse box in the engine bay was completly severed in 2 spots.

anyways I'm going to rewire everything.

By the way the alternator was charing at 15V (as I beleive the whitish powder to be conductive) however when demand for ignition and power was higher, when above 3000rpm and WOT

the radio and lights went out inside the car, and the rpm reading went haywire...

I hope this info will help someone else as it did take me quite a few hours to find.

in my case I guess it is a coincidence that it happened at the same time as my coilpack conversion, or the fact that two more functionnal coil packs require more amps and accelerated the degradation...

anyways that it for now.

Has anyone converted an EJ20K to COP?

The Ej20G is COP
Then came the EJ20K with a waste-spark coil pack
Then in the EJ205 they go back to COP.

Plugwires are pretty much always cheaper to replace than a cop coilpack. But Subaru obviously thought COP was a better ignition system for a turbo engine otherwise they wouldnt have switched back to COP on the ej205 and newer turbo engines.

I'm only in the shopping contemplation phase for a '97 STI and I dont have anything with an EJ20k yet so this is really just a mental exercise but has anyone else considered what would be involved with such a conversion?

I created an ignition converter for the EJ22T folks (aka the Rob's "4to2" converter) that allows running the stock EJ22T 2-channel ignition setup with the 4-channel EJ20G ECU. It should work the same with any other wastespark setup.

More info here;

If I'm reading you correctly I'll need and EJ20G ECU and your converter to go COP on an EJ20K.

Oh! Whoops, I read that backwards. My converter is for a running a wastspark setup with the COP ECU. You want to run a COP setup with a wastespark ECU. That would be significantly more difficult. It is possible to adapt the EJ20K to run on an EJ20G ECU, but would be a lot of work for a questionable benefit.
