Default Hey, guess what... Our fog lights suck!

I have the '12 2.0l premium with the stock fog lights. I'm very unhappy with them. The light output is useless & they look like crap when paired with a set of HID headlights. I bought some yellow LEDs to replace the stock bulbs & they blew a fuse & didn't fit correctly. The only cool thing I've seen done with the fog lights is another member swapped them out with projectors. Though it looks amazing, it's a pricy & in-depth project I'm not willing to take on.

Anyone who has swapped out their fog light bulbs, please post pictures of what you replaced them with & post pics! Thanks!

Note: Fog lights aren't meant to increase visibility in any condition except fog. The more you know.

Foglights are only supposed to have a beam pattern that fills in the gap between your low beams and the front of your car. It is not supposed to overlap your low beam pattern. The stock foglights do what they are supposed to do.

And yet nearly everyone seems to think they are another set of head lights. They do what they are supposed to in the proper situations

Confusion between driving lights and fog lights. Bright beams don't work worth a spit in fog.

For those of you who aren't satisfied with the low beam output, aiming the fogs higher adds a nice amount of light on the road, and illuminates bambi, too.

I didn't think you could aim the foglights. BTW do yours seem pretty loose?

The awd dyke car crowd seems a bit more sensative than the 4wd crowd. However there are plenty of butthurt people on pirate too.

Has anybody figured out how to operate the fogs independant of the headlights yet? That is nice to have in some blizard situations.

I realized they sucked on day one. I wasn't about to be a douche and put HIDs in them, so got some high power yellow LEDs from DDM. They are now nothing more than marker lights, but I like them.

See they are the same for all cars (including my STI and any of my previous cars). It's because THATS HOW FOGLIGHTS ARE SUPPOSED TO WORK!

you can't win. i am giving up on this battle. some people will just never understand what fog lights are no matter how many times you tell them.

If they are supposed to help you see better in fog, or to illuminate the road below and to the sides of the low beam pattern, mine are too dim to do either.

They really make very little difference when they are on -- in the dark, and in the fog. Maybe they are aimed wrong from the factory, but I cannot tell much difference when they are on.

If you are going to tell me that they have to be dim, to work in fog, that is just plain dumb.

If they were brighter, they might serve a purpose other than being marker lights, which is what they are right now with the factory bulbs (what are they, 35 watts of pure fog busting power?)

Would I prefer brighter bulbs, even if it hampered their current non-ability to cut through the fog?

Yes, and so would most of us who think they suck. See how that works!

Being a marker light is half of the purpose. The other purpose is to light the area under the fog without causing glare in the fog above. The big problem with brighter bulbs is the higher wattage and cooking the reflector. IMO, it's just best to write them off as useless.

Light does not "cut through" fog, unless you plan on having beams so bright and hot that the fog evaporates. The location and beam pattern of the lights is designed so that the light is not reflected back in your face. Bright lights only illuminate the fog, they do not pass through it.
