NGK Spark Plug Wires - What Part #?
Hey there!! Our 2004 Subaru Legacy 35th Anniversary Edition recently underwent a similar engine swap by the previous owner, however, plugs and wires were not done. A Japanese EJ20 2.0 engine is what was installed.
We're wanting to put NGK wires and plugs on but with the engine swap, we're not 100% sure what part numbers we need. Two of the wires are longer than the other two - two are approx. 23" long and 2 approx. 18" long. We tried calling NGK direct, but wire lengths are not part of their specs and their parts reps couldn't tell me what set we'd need. Could you please point us in the right direction for both plugs and wires?

No one answer my question above about which spark plugs were used, same number as the ones that came with the jdm engine?
Also, anyone forced to run 93oct? I get pinging when I don't. |

so i literally just did this swap in my 2002 forester automatic and i swapped over everything from my ej25 except the sparkplugs. i left the ones that were in the jdm 2.0 block and i figured if it runs im good. and ill check their size/brand setting specifics in a few weeks and put fresh ones in.

Swap info? Maybe.
Side-note:The 2005 was the return of the EJ253 MAF-based engines BUT no i-AVLS on the cams that the '06+ engines had on the USDM models. (There's a post on here about using older w/newer - fairly recent - that helps w/that...Search.) USDM to JDM: 1. Swap your USDM intake manifold - including all the wiring harness, injectors, etc - everything to the new(er) JDM EJ20. Get new IM gaskets. 2. Swap All the sensors - Cam(shaft), Crank(shaft), - anything that has a wire.* >>>..Why? Because the USDM ECU/ECM must be different in how it 'reads' the signals, so those sensors must match>>>go to Japan and ask a Subaru engineer? :-) 3. Swap the Cam and Crank sprockets/gears. The 'triggers' must match the sensors, which must match the ECU. See #2. 4. Head Gaskets? If you're a savvy Subaru owner you know that you should ALWAYS replace the HG when swapping in a USED engine. Sounds like Cometic may be the best source?? Or find an Aussie site to order them? 5. Spark Plugs: Do NOT consider this 'the truth' but I grabbed this from a Russian (Google translate) Owner's manual for the 2005 EJ20/EJ25: Quote:
6. Timing belt kit, water pump, oil pump "should" be the same as most every other EJ-Series SOHC engine - there are some different style WP's -check yours. SOHC EJ25~SOHC EJ20. * I don't know whether the oil, Temp/CTS, Power steering (?), etc need changed but everything above states to change 'em all, so...yeah. |

EJ20 in an EJ22 equipped car
Would the process be similar if this motor was going into an ej22 equipped car (01 Impreza OBS)? Thanks.

Sorry I need help with my ej25d
Ok I’ve been the victim of a robbery. A illegal repossession. My friend was nice enough to give me a 1999 legacy outback limited. But it had a bad rattle. Thought it jumped time and kissed the valves. But after pulling the engine ej25d frankenmotor. The heads were fine. But the bottom end has metal in it from losing rod bearings and the crankshaft has barely rubbed the block. From sliding back and forth. My question is if my block can’t be rebuilt. What can I do?? What shortblock can I buy were I can use my intake heads Ecu. Something plug and play. I don’t need anything that rips up pavement but I don’t want my wagon lagging up these Arkansas hills. I just need to not walk to work and get my wife to her kemo treatments. Bless you all for even reading this. Any advice is welcomed and appreciated.

The easiest and cheapest? Get another 2.2 full longblock. What exhaust manifold - Single or Dual-port? '90-'95 are Dual; '96-'98 are Single; '90-'94 won't be EGR but can be made to work.Use your IM on it. '95-'98 are plug and play 'as is' -it'll plug in but must match header. |

I haven't read that thread in awhile, but you don't want that 'reverse' engine if that's suggested..just get a 2.2 FULL engine and drop it in....exhaust manifold needed if '96-'98. Edit: 3 years later: I've had a '96 EJ22E under a set of '98 EJ25D heads in my Forester project. Usually it's turbocharged, but I ran it NA/non-turbo for a few weeks and it's livable, but not exciting. It'll climb modest hills in 5th w/out issue. Wouldn't want to it drive at high elevation (over 6K feet) on a regular basis. I'm guessing about 150HP. I 'think' this drops the CR to 9.2:1 from 9.7:1 for both EJ22E and EJ25D. But should get better flow w/the DOHC heads. I used the Fel-Pro EJ25D HG. Last edited by wtdash; 12-30-2023 at 11:39 AM. |

I keep running into this thread via searched and need to clarify some false info here...
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A 150HP+ SOHC EJ201/2/3!!! The EJ20D which was a phase 1 DOHC engine like the EJ25D had 155hp, and some models of the EJ204 had 170-180hp. But there was NEVER a SOHC EJ20 that had more than 140hp. You can double check with Subaru's specification sheets, or just check here:https://legacypic.uk/engine/search.php But you won't find anything. The SOHC EJ20s lose 25+ hp with a direct swap from an EJ251, but DO make for a good short block swap with an EJ18 to gain decent power. Might work with EJ22E heads as well if there isn't a gasket/bore overlap. |
