Subaru has been trying to squeeze 300hp out of the same unreliable engine for 20 years and we keep buying them in self-destructing form from the factory for some reason. I don't care how many rare badges, Autozone wings and lipstick they put on the pig, spending that much money on a car with that pathetic engine is idiotic.

I believe you get a Mercedes A45 AMG for the cost of a S209. For $65k, a Subaru would be at the bottom of that list.

^ This. The EJ was not designed for modern emissions requirements.

If the all new one even comes at all, and is not a got damn sedan, there is hope. Other than that I’m going to have to show my ass and buy my first pony car because Toyo just did a Tommy Balls with the GR4.

On another car forum it’s kind of the nose in the air deal that AWD performance cars are compromised and not “pure” and “engaging” like a RWD performance car. I call BS.

Geez can one of these f’in companies bring a f’in real rally car for the street? Toyo just made one and f’d us. Subaru can you bring an all new STI in anything other than a damn sedan with ironing board on the back?

What? Their CVT transmission doesn’t excite you?

After 07 the sedan went to ****. It’s bloated and just tacky looking. Subaru blew up in popularity and the penny pinchers have over time ruined the vehicles. This is the perfect example of stepping over dimes to pick up nickels. There is no “long term vision,” just “how much profit can we generate in 3 years?

I was a god damn Subaru fan boi since I was a child. Now, I can’t fathom owning anything Subaru unless it’s some gc8 I’m going to dump a wad of cash into as a project. Even then, it’s lower on my totem pole.

I would never consider Subaru STi a “sports car” but I’d consider it “sporty.” To me, awd has nothing to do with if it’s a sports car or not. Go try and tell an owner of a 911 Turbo S that their Porsche isn’t a sports car and see what response you get.

Any details on what happened? Did this blow up on the track, on the street, while swapping the downpipe?

Inquiring minds want to know...

Another Subaru engine toast, thanks to a **** stock tune/engine. We all saw this one coming. Er, almost all of us.

I don't have many details. Stock, no track time, only "spirited" driving.

I'm not at all surprised given the S209's tendency to knock on the stock tune with 93 octane.. let alone crappy 91 ACN.

Engineering/Dad joke (Dadgineeering joke?):

Is the EJ25 in the S209 a ticking timebomb? no, it's a knocking timebomb; the valvetrain isn't the area prone to failure.

Or, like a close friend did, long freeway pulls with his new STI against his brother's BMW. Well maintained and on 93... and soon took out the crank.

I'd warned him not to do that. But apparently didn't believe me or just couldn't resist his brother's taunts.

He wasn't mad at Subaru, just disappointed. He had it fixed and made the dealer buy it back. Now he has a Hellcat with a new SC. Color him happy now.

IOW, while Cali 91 will end the song quickly, long highways pulls on the stock tune with ANY octane gasoline will... ramp you up.

I don’t think they have a choice. I need to look more into why Subaru engine design is so dirty from an emissions stand-point

There is only so much you can tune around with OEM constraints with An over-square design, FI, etc.

When you base model can’t meet the basic euro 6 standard, and gets a emissions tax, you have design standards problems.

Odd for such a green company.

Peace,

Greg

So, basically, Subaru would like people to spend over $65K on a car that can potentially spin its bearings just like a regular STI? Get the **** out of here.

The Mustang is such a better performance bargain. 460hp for $35k and decades later Subaru still can't get past 300hp. I don't need 4 doors or AWD, so brand loyalty is only gonna get you so far in the performance market. It's a "put up or shut up" segment.

Agreed, they lost the plot when the performance segment of the brand blew up. Although I liked the hatchback STIs. Just not their motors that self-destructed from the factory. That was a dozen years ago and here we are today. It's what makes a Subaru a Subaru.

$65k on any Subaru (other than like a 22B or WRC car) is teh dumbz. "We limited the number you can buy and doubled the price." Cool, could you make the car better tho? Or not embarass yourself with C8 pricing.

Nah ticking starts after typical head gasket job. Then you got yourself a garage band.

I don't need 4 doors but want AWD. I much prefer to RWD for all weather performance. A 2nd set of wheels for our winters and rain and I'm set. That's my ultimate performance car.

I can't do a GT, it will have to be a used GT350. I love the Voodoo motor but you get a good one or you get a bad one with Ford. The Voodoo has the same potential to blow that the EJ does so it's like trading one potential headache for another.

i bought an Infiniti Q60 Red Sport AWD - also didn't need 4 doors, but did need AWD (i work until midnight, streets are often unplowed/unsalted when i leave work if its snowing) - was as good as any Subaru i've had with 2nd set of wheels + snow tires.

He might tow another S209 or this one for a second time after it gets fixed.
