Default Spied! Rear-Wheel Drive Kia K9 Fullsize Sedan

Quote:
Described by our spy shooter as a sort of Korean Maserati Quattroporte, the Kia K9 shows the formerly bargain-basement brand’s ambitions know no bounds. It appears Kia is aiming right for the heart of the premium sedan segment with its upcoming flagship offering. The front-drive Cadenza model is no great secret, with a hole needing to be filled in the U.S. market with the departure of the oddly-styled Amanti sedan. But details about the K9 have until lately been significantly more obscure.

By all indications, the K9 appears to share most of its underpinnings with the Hyundai Genesis sedan. As such, it’s expected the Genesis’ engines and power train offerings will likely carry over as well. However, the Kia GT concept shown a few months ago featured a twin-turbocharged V-6, so there’s a possibility Kia may debut a production version of this powerplant under the hood of its big sedan.

The Genesis currently has eight-speed automatics across-the-board, but it has already been reported that Hyundai/Kia already has a 10-speed under development. Our Europe-based contributor also pointed out that if Kia has big hopes for this model in Europe, a diesel option is practically mandatory. Hyundai/Kia does have a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 in its power train arsenal, but it’s unknown if this engine may be slated for a Euro-trim K9.

If the big sedan does come to the U.S. market, it’s likely a name change is in order as well, as K9 is the commonly-used code for police canine units, and all of Kia’s other U.S. models have proper names as opposed to alpha-numeric designations used in other markets. On-sale date is unknown, but believed to be sometime in calendar 2013.

Is there really a market for this? I mean, if someone wants something like this, can't they just buy the Genesis sedan, which I don't think is a big seller/hit as it stands. Does the world really need a Kia version?

The Kia version was supposed to be a bit more lithe, and a bit sportier than luxury-oriented.

This looks like a bland copy of a Jag XF. I was hoping for more, based on some of the bolder designs that Kia has been showing lately.

Why not just pick up a Jag XF just off it's first 2 year lease?

I really hope this is something more akin to a G8 and not just a Genesis that's $1,500 cheaper.

Kia has at last confirmed it is planning a rear-drive luxury sedan, releasing several teaser images of what is code named the KH. Based on Hyundai’s rear-drive architecture, some reports indicate that it is in fact the stretched platform used by the larger Equus sedan, and not the mid-size Genesis.
Set to launch later this year in South Korea (and believed to be called the K9 there), Kia has yet to confirm what other markets it will be sold in, although it’s likely to be a global vehicle and comments made by Kia marketing exec Soon-Nam Lee indicate it will find its way to US shores. “Although launch timings for overseas markets are yet to be confirmed,” he said, “this all-new rear-wheel drive large sedan will definitely become the leading model of our lineup around the world, showcasing the best of the best of Kia.”
The brand’s first rear-drive model, look for power to come from either a 4.6-liter V8, which makes 385 hp in the Genesis, or a larger 5.0-liter V8 that can produce as much as 429 hp. Expect it to be paired with either an 8-speed automatic or even a new 10-speed automatic transmission.

not really, but this is like a Halo car, to help Kia's overall impression. just to show they are capable. Too many folks still see Hyundai/Kia as cheap junk. One drive of the new Optima SX turbo changed my opinion quickly

I said it before and I'll say it again, is someone looking for this type of vehicle really going to shop KIA for their needs/desires?

Hyundai should have just waited until they had a couple of cars with a couple more on the way and launched a premium brand like the Japanese manufacturers have.

Is the Genesis sedan doing that well that a Kia version is a good idea? Will there be enough people who say "forget that Genesis, this Kia version is the bees knees".

Their Equuos (sp?) sales figures so far for 2012 are around 371. At the rate they're selling monthly, they'll sell around 2400 of their Flagships by December. That's within their expectation of 2-3K units in the US for 2012. Pretty good figures for their flagship ultralux car.

EDIT: Sales figures for the Genesis for January 2012: 2,291 units in the US. I'd say that's a pretty good sign that the Kia branded variant will do well.

The chrome-lined window graphic, and largely flat horizontal profile are pretty telling, even with the camoflage.

The Forester is there to pull it out of the snow when it loses traction(since it is just RWD). It is already towing something!!
