Default Mid 90's JDM Forester engines

You don't see much talk of these engines, but I am starting to see them popping up at importers and on E-bay. Anyone know what kind of power or what turbo these engines run? Anyone around here have pinouts for them? I am going to guess that they are very very similar to same year WRX engines, with minor tuning changes. For the savings one could get with the less desireable Forester engines, it might be worth me buying one of two and doing some swaps with them.

Don't know about question #1. And question #2 is exactly what I am thinking. I need some replacement parts to complete my Ej20K swap since I stole some stuff. I am selling my RS and want to buy an older Impreza and throw that EJ20K into it...

with that close a MY i'd think it shares quite a bit parts wise with a K or 2.5L NA. thats before 205 iirc. but with JDM forester it may be out the window(doubt it tho).

what was it listed as matt? JDM for sure? did EDM have turbo forester also? AUDM? seems like JHOT has a bad habit of mis-labeling lately. i'd watch it and get serial info like normal. but low bid him and say it's a weird engine and may not work for you. just to get one hella cheap and find out what it's related to.

i'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's a WRX ej20K and ECU. unless they made more power, then STi ECU possibly.

i have no money to find out. how about you guys?

I don't have a specific engine in mind. I am just seeing more of them over the last 6 months or so, and I know that Venus out in CA has been getting them for 5 years or more. I am mostly just curious about specs and whatnot. Hopefully someone will pop in with a nice link similar to the Ken and Catherine link for WRX's...

We had the Forester Turbo in Europe since MY98. It had a EJ20K turbo engine with a tiny TF035 turbo. For MY99 on, it also got the EJ205 engine, again with the smaller turbo (Euro WRX had the TD04). As far as I know, internals for EJ20K and EJ205 are the same for both Forester and WRX.

I know that some Japanese Forester engines also got the TD04. I know that most JDM Forester Turbos made about 220-250 hp, which is about right with a TD04 but next to impossible with a TF035. The Euro Forester EJ20K made 170 ps on a TF035, the EJ205 made 177 ps.

Yeah, but if you can get it cheap enough to afford a TD04 and a piggyback when you get it...

Indeed, but spool-up is excellent even from under 2k rpm. But please note that the Forester also has different cams, when comparing partnumbers. I don't know if that also translates into less lift and/or duration, as I don't have the specs.

first i don't think we are going to see many eudm cars here but a 170ps would probably also have smaller injectors .. smaller than the ej20gs we have been seeing for a few years now its not a good starting point ... about as good as a ej22t

Marnix is right on. They have slightly milder cams than the WRX, slightly higher compression (EJ205) and the little TF035. 170ps or later 177ps. I have driven only an automatic and can tell you it drives like an NA car, there is no turbo lag at all. Stick your foot in it, and as soon as the torque converter stalls there is boost. No, it is not very exciting up top, running out of breath around 5k. I think one of these engines would be a good buy fpr a swap since they have an easy life on low boost and good gas. Bolt on your choice of turbo, upgrade the injectors as necessary, and away you go. The Japanese do not tend to bother modifying Foresters for performance.

I've just checked the partnumbers for the injectors:

EUDM
16611AA100/101 dark grey side feed standard on EJ20G and EJ20K Impreza WRX (MY93-98)
16611AA370 yellow side feed standard on EJ205 Impreza WRX (MY99-00)
16611AA370 yellow side feed standard on EJ205 Forester (MY99-00)
16611AA521 blue top feed standard on EJ205 Impreza WRX (MY01 on)
16611AA521 blue top feed standard on EJ205 Forester (MY01-02)

JDM
16611AA100/101 dark grey side feed standard on EJ20G and EJ20K Impreza WRX (MY93-98)
16611AA370 yellow side feed standard on EJ205 and EJ207 Impreza WRX (MY99-00)
16611AA100/101 dark grey side feed standard on EJ20K Forester (MY97-98)
16611AA370 yellow side feed standard on EJ205 Forester (MY99-01)
16611AA521 blue top feed standard on EJ205 Impreza WRX (MY01 on)
16611AA521 blue top feed standard on EJ205 Forester (MY01-on)

It seems we did not get the EJ20K Forester in Europe based on my parts CD-ROM. I have to check that. Also there's been overlap in side feed and top feed engines in Japan on Forester.

Anyway, bottom line is that also injectors are the same as the WRX.

I'll drop Subaru Japan a line that their part CD-ROM is incorrect.

Seriously, my 'source' shows only the AA100/101 up to MY98, even for the STI engines.

The yellow top AA370 is 440cc, the dark grey top is 380cc.
