BJJ is not MMA. It would be considered bad form to lock on a sub and immediately go for broke, but if you lock it on, increase pressure, and the guy doesn't tap...either YOU give up and lose, or you break his arm and win. He is not required to tap; if he does not, you'll have to break it to win.

Even in TJJ it's bad form to crank something on unless you're in a self defense situation on the street.

A big problem arises with guys like Jones who don't tap, that if you go hard and he's not tapping you can't back off at all if you really want to get the sub with that move. Even a minor pressure release will feel amazing to him, and I'm betting that's exactly what gave Jones the strength and drive to pick up and slam Vitor on his neck.

This is why I like the A-frame armbar. Slide your arm closest to his head down behind his elbow and grab your own elbow or bicep, creating a fulcrum point more firm and exact than your squishy thigh.

Anyway, it was a good night of fights, looking forward to 153 now. I uhh, I don't have high hopes for Bonnar, but if he can channel his inner TUF1 persona and just not give up, it should be entertaining.

I honestly dont think he held back in that arm bar. In the heat of the moment, with a tap or snap scenario to win the LHW championship, no way he is holding back because he doesnt want to hurt the guy. IMHO, if the guy isnt going to tap then he really isnt giving you any other choice (ie Mirr vs. Sylvia / Big Nog, Rousey vs. Tate, Hughes vs. Gracie, etc).

I vaguely remember GSP had Dan Hardy in an armbar which Dan was not tapping out of. Instead of cranking it, GSP elected to let it go. Which I very much disagree with. It's the other dude's arm and career. If he doesn't want to tap, then go all the way.

He will lose it. Last few fights the old guys took him too far. Hendo prolly would have ended him.

You understand he was just almost subbed by a 35year old, 185lber in the first minute and a half of the fight?

Yes as Mike Goldberg says, anything can happen in MMA but point is Jones got over confident and nearly paid for it.

Also, I have a distinct feeling that Vitor Hirt his right knee or had some other issue that prevented him from pushing forward. It just didn't make sense to continually pull the guard. Even though jones was using his open hand left as a standing jab/Diaz style bear paw to keep the distance, Vitor was able to come inside and still touch his chin.

A guy like Henderson would've continually plodded forward.

Don't get me wrong, Jones is great but it's been proven all too often that there can easily be a reshuffle of the top 10 deck, given the right match up.

I firmly believe if Chris Weidman gets his match up with Silva at 185, I think Silvas reign will end. Against anyone else? I don't think so, unless Belcher shows serious power in his hands, Henderson drops to 185 or the Cuban pulls his head out of his ass and swings for the fences like he did in Bellator. But that's prize fighting. All about the match ups.

Because fighter A beat fighter B, and fighter B beat fighter C, it doesn't mean fighter A will win a fight with C.

Just watched the highlights. Jones' slam was about as close to a spike as I've seen in a long time... I really think Henderson has a good chance against him if he can get a shot in the next year.

People are also counting machida out all too easy I think. It wouldn't be a knockout. But he can beat him with his speed and style if he has a perfect fight.

Every season, I end up gaining respect for a coach and losing respect for a coach. Shane Carwin is rapidly gaining my respect.

Wait, what?

His whole fighting strategy is to avoid losing. He never tries to go for a win. It's all about making it to the next round and hoping he can lay his big ass gut on his opponents face.

There's only one thing I can see him teaching. The second they swing counter with an over hand right and pray it connects.

Big Country is going to deliver his team a merciless ass whooping if he doesn't get better at this coaching thing. Carwin is a smart guy, and he's proven that by getting the hell out of the way and letting Trevor Whitman basically run his team.

Here's to hoping that Carwin's back/neck holds up and he and Roy make it to the finale so Carwin can murder Big Country.

I like Big Country a lot... so long as he isn't facing someone worth a damn at HW (most of whom will beat the hell out of him anyway).

Anyone on here follow Bloody Elbow/mmamania (sbnation blogs)? I hate the new freaking site design. I'm sure it will grow on me, but for now, I'd like to see it

17 months since his last bout, gonna have ring rust. I hope GSP can still deliver; or hell, actually be better and finish bouts. ibherewegoagain

I would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous for GSP. It was a pretty serious injury, and like you said, that is a long lay over of ring rust. If I can keep my hopes low, it will help if GSP dissapoints.

GSP won't disappoint. There's not going to be ring rust. Ring rust is for guys that allow themselves to get out of shape in between camps. GSP doesn't do that. He hasn't been fighting but he's been conditioning for the majority of the injury lay off. I'm expecting him to come back stronger and with more energy after taking some time off from fighting.

It won't be an issue of GSP disappointing, the issue will be if Condit exceeds expectations and lands one of his knock out strikes.

I'm curious to see what Condit has done in the interim. I'd venture a guess that he comes into the cage with a good bit more muscle mass. He's been thickening up since his time in the UFC began.

Condit's a boss. Huge respect for GSP but I am not a big fan so I'm rooting for Condit to dethrone GSP, then an epic battle ensues between Condit and Markham where Markham outclasses Condit for the belt and then pops for roids.
