Default 2015 WRX - Submitted a glitch on the multifunction display MFD to Subaru

I sent this email to SOA. Can anyone also experiencing this submit their issue? Here is their email: [email protected]

Hello,

I just took delivery of my 2015 WRX (and would like to report a glitch in the multifunction display in hopes it can be fixed via firmware update. The screen that shows three icons (MPG, ODO and ACCLR %) when customized, it resets to default value every 3 days or so. Also, I change it to display the summary after each drive and that also resets to the default value of "NO".

Thank you,

Interesting. Are you losing any of your other settings as well? Clock, radio presets, trip odometer, etc?

No, not everything. I entered some birthdays and anniversary to see if those got erased; nope. Those are the only two things I've noticed so far. Got tired of setting it back to how I wanted it so I just left it to default setting. But then again, I haven't tweaked much of the other settings so I can't tell if that's also resetting. Might try changing the default values of the other settings to see if they stick.

My first thought was maybe the car was intermittently losing power for some reason. But I would think that would wipe your other presets like I'd mentioned as well if that were the case. Have you contacted your dealer about it?

I'll check mine tomorrow. I set mine up 4 days ago and haven't touched it since.

Here's their response:

Good Morning,

Thank you for contacting Subaru of America, Inc. I regret the circumstances which prompted your contact to us, but I do appreciate the opportunity to assist you.

Congratulations on your purchase. I understand you have a concern with the multi-function display in your vehicle. I would love to look in to this for you to see if the multi-function display is operating as designed or if there is a glitch in your vehicle. Have you been to an authorized Subaru dealership for your concern? Please feel free to respond to this e-mail or call 1-800-SUBARU3.

Have a Great Day!

Best Regards,

Zakiya Mitchell
Subaru of America, Inc
.

And here's what I responded back.

Good morning Zakiiya,

Thanks for the response. No, I haven't been to an authorized Subaru dealership yet because one, the car is so new and not much information is out yet. Two, I'm not able to replicate the problem since it does take a few days (completely random) before my triple meters reset back to stock setting and three, I wanted to report to SOA as soon as possible for possible fix.

Thanks again for your time,

you might consider an in-car cam to try and capture it. or, keep a pen and paper handy and write down everything you notice at the next few happenings, even things that might seem unimportant. it may very well be quite difficult for a dealer to diagnose if they can't replicate it, so any information trail will help.

Yeah, mine seems to be doing it as well. I usually have the MFD on the radio info, but sometimes when I turn on the car it is back to the boost gauge. Sure enough, I check the triple meter and it has been reset to it's default meters.

Also, just noticed today that the back part of the antenna doesn't actually make contact with the roof. Anyone else notice that?

In the MFD do you select the "save/select" button or the "cancel" button when u exit MFD? Also if u exit without clicking the save button, it will reset the info u put into it

As I mentioned in the thread I started, the last two Friday mornings our WRX has reset its triple guage cluster to the default guages. No other power loss, resets, or changes; clocks, radio presets, hvac all remain unchanged. Park the car on Thursday night with boost/oil temp/accel on the display, start the car on Friday with three fuel economy gauges.

Sending a message to SOA today.

I'd recommend getting the problem on video somehow since if a dealership can't replicate the issue, they wont fix it. But good call on getting in contact with SOA, at least they will know of the issue and keep it on file.

Actually, the mpg summary, if you have it set to display after turning off the car, resets to its default of not displaying too.

That means if you changed your triple meter to display other than default it has rest too.

My car did this the 2nd or 3rd day I had it, then didn't do it again for 2 weeks. Very random. I sure as hell won't be the guy to take the car in to a dealer for them to figure it out. Get it back with a smoked clutch and 40 extra miles on the odo only to hear "sorry, can't replicate, it's your imagination" regarding a simple MFD glitch.

I don't seem to notice until I'm driving down the road, then I never get enough time at a stop light to get in and change it before moving again (it doesn't allow access to those settings when moving.) Funny how red lights seem to take forever until you need that time to do things hah.

^^^This is so true!!! Playing with the MFD does make that light change much more quickly

I am sure the glitch is a simple software problem. I don't have it on mine, and I am wondering if it's because I have the Canadian programing.

Here is their latest response. Again, I urge everyone to change their triple meter and see if it changes back to default setting and email SOA for a possible fix.

Hi,

Quote:
I appreciate you bring this concern to our attention. I have spoken with our tech's, and there is no information out regarding this concern and no recalls. I will be sure to forward your information and feedback to our engineering department. If you believe that this is a malfunction, please take your vehicle to an authorized Subaru dealership. If you would like for me to remain involved, I can do so by you providing me with the dealership you are going to along with the appointment date and time. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Have a Great Day!

Best Regards

You really can't record it since it resets on the next start up.

I don't have any advice for you other than to be patient. Bugs that are random and hard to reproduce take a long time to find. Once they are found and fixed the new software will go through a long period of regression testing. After that, they'll figure out how to deploy it to the dealer network. My guess is that you could be in for a year long wait for a software update that resolves the issue. You need to take the car to the dealer (and keep bringing it back as it reproduces so that its logged), as the SOA guy said. That's the only way this will show up on Engineering's radar.

This post brought to you by the engineer that designs in car infotainment systems that are much more complex than the MFD in your WRX.

Good luck!

Is anyone else still having this issue? Mine just started doing it. I usually leave me MFD on the triple gauge screen. However, I did notice when it resets it takes me MPG summary away.

Initialize the entire MFD in settings. You will loose all your saved data but I did that over 6 months ago and fixed my issue. Report back.

Mine did this a number of times back in April when I first got it, and now it's doing it again. It did not reset itself at all during the summer.

I'm %95 sure it's happening on the colder nights. Anyone else notice a correlation with temperature? (Note that this thread was active in April, then went dead until October)
