I didn't know you had a sedan until I read your info below your username just now. Why not a hatch? Just no need for the space?

I don't know why, but it's nearly impossible to shift into 2nd gear smoothly. Unless I make significant effort at slipping the clutch, it does this weird thing where it slips, then grabs quickly, then almost chatters a little bit. Only when going to 2nd gear though. Every other gear is fine. My theory is that at the second gear ratio, the torque that the engine can apply is closely matched to what the wheels can apply, and the clutch plates fight. In higher gears, the wheel torque dominates the engine torque and the engine side of the clutch more easily gets forced to match speed by the wheel side. Also I wonder if there isn't a slight buckling defect in the clutch plates that causes uneven grab, most apparent at that 2nd gear evenly matched torque point.

Or maybe I have no idea how clutches really work and my theory makes no sense ...
Granny shifting, not double clutching like you should

$500 less
Better aero / mpg
Prettier
Quieter
Trunk lid conceals valuables and is less hassle than a hatch for small loads like groceries.
I have another hatchback available when I need more capacity.

Prettier?... Subjective. Sedan looks like a granny mobile

Gonna have to agree with g4 here.

I think the CoD is only 0.02 higher on the hatch, not that much. But point taken.

Quieter wouldn't make a difference here where the government allows the roads to be destroyed by morons with tire chains and studded tires that they leave on after it's been well above freezing and hasn't snowed for 3-4 months. It's like having a GE90 turbofan engine mounted under your car at 105% throttle any time you're above 40mph. Doesn't matter if you have a Rolls Royce with 1000 pounds of sound insulation, it'd still be deafening.

I love my 4dr and it does look better than the hatch IMO, think about why Subaru dropped the WRX/STi hatch. If anything screams grocery-getter its the 5dr.

If anything screams 70 year old it's the 4 door.

Subjective, yes, but I don't see "granny" in either one (though one is technically a wagon).

I do think the sedan has nicer lines, and better fitting taillights while the design of the hatch looks a bit forced.

CR said the sedan was quieter than comparable sedans while the hatch was noisier than comparable hatches.

The sedan also does not have (potential) leakage, corrosion, wiper or washer issues.

You can still carry a fair amount by putting the seats down. I got a 2 ton engine hoist home this way.

Also, it's very easy to open the trunk in tight spaces or when both hands are occupied.

I'm not anti-hatch, I own another hatchback, but buying this specific car in 5 door would have offered me nothing so the drawbacks weren't worth it. As a single car city dweller, I might have gone the other way.

To me it is the tail lights on the sedan that just don't do it for me. Very roundish, soft lines make the tail lights look like a yaris/echo.

I find the hatch retardedly easy to open. The only way it could get easier is if it had that feature some have where you wave your foot under the bumper to open it. But really, that's just one of those things Ford did to impress idiots who are swayed by single features rather than the overall package.

Let's refrain from embedding 15MB of super high res photos directly in a catch-all thread. It's annoying enough on a desktop with broadband and worse on mobile.

Only one is higher than 2MB and they're all reduced 25% from their original size too. People have done much worse than me in this thread.

Others have done it too.

Your photos are 3-5MB and you posted several. It sucks to be on mobile and be forced to download the equivalent of a 1 hour podcast just to check up on a thread.

Resolutions that high are great for print but a waste on most monitors. The forum "resize" just alters the HTML attributes to fit the page width. It doesn't do any actual compression. Thumbnail, resize or link. I'm sure it would be appreciated by many.

The hatch doesn't exist because Subaru has said the performance segment is a sedan segment. Has nothing to do with looks

If they're 3-5MB then that image host created data because 3 of them are 1.8MB or less, and one is like 2.7MB on my computer.

Could be the image host, but the resolution is still overkill.

I've been thinking about picking up a relatively low mileage CVT from ebay and just keeping it for the day my CVT explodes.

Reasons to do it:
CVT has a fair chance of just grenading some day randomly, unlike the manual.
If I wait until it DOES happen, the only CVTs available are likely to be 100k+ miles and old and uncared-for.
They're like $500-700 right now on ebay. That's insanely cheap for a CVT.
Won't have to wait for weeks and weeks if the CVT does go eventually

Reasons not to:
$500 isn't an insignificant amount of money.
CVT could last 300,000 miles for all I know.
Takes up space wherever I keep it.
I may suddenly have a need to buy a larger or otherwise different vehicle.

I probably won't buy one, but it is a possibility.

Was doing some spring cleaning and came across some of my sound deadening supplied I got when I installed my component speakers.

Was thinking about doing another project to make the car quieter, what's the biggest bang for the buck area to do? I have some closed cell foam left, a little dynamat, and some MLV.

Was thinking the floor and headliner would be a good place to start

Under-hood / firewall are the first items on my list.

Make sure you're running decently quiet tires.

I can do it just fine now, but at first it was a bit challenging. The shift speed between the other gears is not the same as 1-2, which is honestly a bit weird and annoying, but do it long enough and it becomes motor reflex.
What tune do you have? How does it help? Where can I get it?

I think that the fact that there is no throttle cable and a computer is deciding what my throttle pedal inputs are supposed to do does exacerbate the issue.

3rd 4th and 5th gears just seem to be well ratioed such that an upshift just naturally "falls into place" -- I tend to rev to about 3k before shifting and that's just perfect for those gears. However, doing that with second means there is a gigantic chasm in revs between the shift out of 1st and where you need to be to shift into 2nd. And it's not particularly easy to get the timing right. 1/3 of the time the shift is clean just because I guess I got it just right, but 2/3 are pretty jerky and despite my best efforts I've never been able to do better.

Well, it's mostly just a minor annoyance really. I can live with it. But I would like to know more about that tune. Thanks!

Hood makes zero difference. Trust me. Just think about it, you're only blocking sound from the engine bay going into the environment, and vice versa. If you're trying to block more noise from the engine bay entering the cabin, the firewall makes more sense.

IME 75% of road noise comes from the wheel wells. It would be best to line there.
