Subaru is notorious for having questionable oem map/tunes (detonation) which resulted in these and other issues. Which is resolvable with a solid aftermarket tune, but really should be done right at the factory. Stronger pistons only makes it's it more tolerate of detonation.

The problem is the factory tune. If the engine is experiencing detonation, it'll destroy not just the pistons (forged also), but the rings as well. With that being said, I personally wouldn't run a Subaru hard on a factory tune and I only go to a tuner I trust.

Of course Subaru knows how to tune an engine safely. The problem is, modern emissions standards. In order to get the aging EJ past ever-tightening emissions standards, it's well-known that Subaru has been forced into tunes I'm sure they'd prefer not to use. Started back in 2005 with the OL/CL fueling delays, and has continued since. The tune was lean enough, and the newer pistons weak enough, that in 2011ish they started having problems breaking pistons on stock motors, which they didn't use to do with regularity. It's really hard to avoid knock on an over-square, port injection engine while meeting today's emissions regs. A tuner, however, has no such regulations to meet. They can let the motor go open-loop much sooner, they can richen the motor up all over the place without any emissions worries. They have MUCH more flexibility with their tunes to keep knock at bay. Now granted, of course increasing power lowers reliability too. And I'm not one to say a typical stage 2 tune is "safer" than the stock tune as many do. But I would say that a tuner can probably do some minor things to the stock maps, leaving boost and timing alone, in order to make the motor less detonation prone. This isn't a bad read which explains some of the potential causes of issues, including the tune, newer piston designs, driver factors, etc. A main theme is that the EPA is more to blame for ringland failures than Subaru is.

i have a 3/36 lease on my 2017 limited (started Feb '17) and I know i'm going to get crushed on the early turn-in. it has less than 4k miles. my current monthly lease thru Subaru/Chase is $467. Does Subaru do lease transfers if I can find someone who wants it? |

A short block assembly for a 2011 STi is the same number. Look at the piston numbers. Piston for a 2011 STi: 12006AC390(standard Grade A) 12006AC400(Standard Grade B) Piston for a 2018 STi Type RA: 12006AC390 (Standard Grade A) 12006AC400 (standard Grade B) And FWIW, when looking at the struts, the struts listed for the Type RA show that they ONLY fit the Type RA. Yet the front springs for the Type RA are the same for all 2016 + WRX and STi's including the RA. Interesting, but I doubt anyone actually buying a Type RA really cares |

So the pistons are the same, even though they say stronger pistons, same short block as previous years

I would of thought there would be new part number for the pistons, and are the forged or not

I just thought it was interesting that the TypeRA parts were already listed on parts.subaru.com and started looking around. I've always had super good luck with accuracy for parts(as one would think since it is Subaru's site).
Not saying there aren't inaccuracies or maybe all of the "true" type RA parts aren't listed on there yet since the car is not yet available? Who knows. The TypeRA shortblock part number listed previously from the "catalog", part number 10103AD020, says on parts.subaru.com says "This Product is No Longer Available". So maybe the site just didn't get updated yet or something. However, when looking at the exhaust on parts.subaru.com, which has been said that the TypeRA has a "free'er flowing exhaust" does indeed show a TypeRA specific part number for both the catback and the mufflers. So it would seem they got that one right. Looking at the entire transmission assembly, again, parts.subaru.com shows a TypeRA ONLY part number for the TypeRA transmission which would obviously make sense as well since it is different. Other "TypeRA specific" parts like the steering wheel, rear spoiler(almost $4000 ) are correct on the site, and other parts like the new "cold air intake" and carbon roof panel show they are TypeRA specific but not yet listed. |

Good information they're shik,, I believe the part numbers will come out after the car comes out in April, I do believe there will be a new short block, but I think the rumor has it that the Pistons are cast, stronger in that they got more material and possibly the ring lands are lower down in the Piston to protect it from the combustion chamber so that will be good,, be nice to see some pictures of these new Pistons

Yes, a lot(most) parts you posted do jive with the parts.subaru.com site, yet when it comes to pistons, rings, heads, etc, they come up with a red "ALERT" and state they are no longer available. I'd be curious to know why the engine stuff doesn't seem to coincide, yet everything else does.
