Mugen Introduces Outlandish Body Kit For Honda Civic Type R
The extravagant makeover makes the standard car look plain by comparison.

Adrian Padeanu
It’s safe to say we’ve seen our fair share of radically styled cars at the Tokyo Auto Salon this year, but this one likely takes the cake. Mugen’s new RC20GT styling package tailored to the Honda Civic Type R makes the hot hatchback look wild and overly aggressive – and that says something considering the standard car is not exactly conventionally styled to begin with.

An evolution of last year’s package, the 2019 version is still not ready for JDM hot hatch owners looking to give their Type Rs an outlandish makeover. Mugen labels it as a pre-production version, which likely means the final kit will look very much like in these images, complete with a massive Audi-esque front grille and carbon fiber galore.

Honda Civic Type R Mugen RC20GT Package pre-production model
13 Photos

Without going into details, the tuner mentions this is more than just a styling package as the changes they’ve made to the body have improved not only aerodynamics, but also the cooling efficiency. In addition, a power upgrade is being worked on for the turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine. As a reminder, Honda’s four-cylinder mill puts out a healthy 306 hp and 295 pound-feet (400 Newton-meters) of torque in its standard guise.

If for good reason you are finding this package to be a bit too much, Mugen has a more conventional visual kit for the Civic Type R. Also a work-in-progress pack, the second cosmetic treatment takes several cues from the look-at-me makeover, but to a lesser extent. It’s still a sight to behold, but without sending that love/hate vibe of the RC20GT.

For those looking to get behind the wheel of a hotter Civic Type R straight from a Honda dealer, a more powerful version could be on its way. In June 2017, a company official hinted at more power and the possibility of an all-wheel-drive version, although it remains to be seen whether these will come to fruition. Maybe with the facelifted model we spied last year?

Mugen Radical Type R RC20GT For Hardcore Civic Type R Boy Racers
BY Dan Mihalascu | January 10, 2019
When the new Civic Type R launched in 2017, some applauded Honda for the courage to fit the production car with such a radical looking body kit, while others scoffed at the idea, labeling it a ‘boy-racer’.

Compared to what Mugen has in store for the Civic Type R, however, the standard body kit looks really tame. You might recall that at the 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon Mugen brought the RC20GT Type R Concept which featured a more hardcore aero kit and a motorsport-flavored interior.

Fast forward one year and Mugen has refined the RC20GT further, calling it now a pre-production model. Besides the updated graphics, the body kit seems identical with the 2008 model. However, Mugen says it has improved the design to boost aerodynamic performance on the circuit. The tuner also talks about enhancing the power and cooling performance but doesn’t provide specifics.

Mugen describes the RC20GT Package Pre Production Model as the “ultimate Type R” and chances are not many will argue with that. Expect production version to become available soon on the Japanese market.

In addition to the RC20GT, Mugen’s stand at the Tokyo Auto Salon also includes the Mugen Civic Type R Prototype. Previewing a production model, it’s a slightly less extreme take on the hot hatch that features a conventional Civic Type R grille instead of the Audi-like grille of the RC20GT.

The Mugen Civic Type R Prototype features parts that are currently under development alongside parts sourced from the RC20GT — notice the similar mirror caps, alloy wheels, and rear wing.

From Hell - Mugen RC20GT Civic Art R Concept 2018

https://www.tuningblog.eu/en/categor...oncept-184735/

Already ex works, the completely redeveloped Honda Civic Type R with its 320 PS is anything but discreet and inconspicuous. A huge spoiler factory on the tailgate, three tailpipes in the bumper and actually barely defused beads and edges compared to its FK2 predecessor. But that's nothing against that Mugen RC20GT Civic Art R Concept Car that yesterday at the Tokyo Auto Show was presented. This vehicle shoots the bird and has little in common with the standard Civic Type R.

A huge and extremely eye-catching other body kit focuses especially on a more than just getting used to the radiator grille. In our opinion, here are just missing the Audi emblems and finished would be any concept car from Ingolstadt. The complete body kit consists of high-quality and ultralight carbon and in our opinion this one could have been a bit more successful. This Gumpert Apolo, Audi & CR-Z hybrid mix It will not be easy on the tuning market, we are convinced of that.

Apart from the rather unsuccessful front comes the Bodykit with widened fenders including gills, new side skirts, a hood including air vents, an even larger rear wing and also a rather unsatisfied Heckdiffusor including central exhaust pipe. The rims installed here also do not want to fit this vehicle and let the RC20GT become a vehicle.Back to the Future"As the successor of the legendary DeLorean his right to exist.

Similarly crazy it is also in the interior to where a lot of carbon was installed and should provide a complete over all cage for protection. Also pretty much getting used to, and especially in our eyes meaningless, are the two individual seats in the rear. Not only does the roll cage interfere with it, but the 5 point straps make it almost impossible for passengers to sit in the back. So why not remove it and you're done? You would even save weight.

That's right, that Mugen RC20GT Civic Art R Concept is definitely different! But for us, for example, is the variant of Progressive SR (Asia) or Seibon carbon the much more successful and both are also more practical and all in all, simply nicer. How do you see it? If we get further details, especially about the engine power or the chassis, there is of course as always an update for this report. It's best to subscribe to our feed and if there is something new you will get in touch immediately. We wish you a lot of fun watching the pictures.

I thought the CTR came from the factory with every body kit in the world already installed? Guess Mugen found a few more lol

Must be a pain in the butt to detail this abomination.

2001 called, they want their civic back.

Put some Neon Underglow , swap/wrap all the hoses under the hood red or blue, and paint the dash vents to match the exterior color of the car ..... nice autozone stick on hood vent.

LOL someone looked at the Civic Type R and was like, "this car doesn't look goofy enough, what can we add to make it even more silly?" Well played.

The front end of that white one isn't half bad. Better than stock. But the black concept... ugh.

If you don’t like the looks of the CTR, it is probably our fault for complaining about the boring look of Hondas for the last couple decades. They decided to give car enthusiasts “what they wanted”.

Honda designed the Civic Type R with enough overwrought styling cues and tacked on body kit that there's really not a lot a lot of room to add more body parts. That rear bumper cover looks really bad for even Mugen. Looks like the type of design you see from a cheap made in China fiberglass body kit. Funny thing is that some people will pay a lot of money for these kits.

Looks to me on the white one like they just added lip and side skirts that go over the factory lip and side skirts. Kind of redundant.

There's also a little white trim piece over the fog light... imo, it really cleans up the giant openings. Lip kit is fine. Mirror caps are pretty awful.
