How much PSI is too much PSI?
I just ordered my Greddy Profec A boost controller for my 2002 wrx, and i was just wondering what the max PSI i can be setting it at in order to safely maintane the turbo. My dealer told me the turbo bleeds at 13 stock, so im planning on pushing it to 15-16, is that too much? Someone told me i could go up to 18 if i wanted, but that seemed a tad too much, does anyone know the limits of the turbo?
thx, Omair

I think you can do 18 for like 2 seconds...
then the ecu doesn't let you continue... I would seriously get some sort of data logger. I have an EBC...and so far I havent done anything more then stock...until I get a data logger and knock sensor. I'm one of those paranoid types... But I read recently that going beyond the stock causes some strange responses from the ECU. PSI + Information = POWER! |

i dont think it would be a good idea to go over 15.5 with a mbc. if your looking for real power get it chiped unichip or tec 2 if u have a lot of money. you will get much better results

Are you asking what's safe? Or what the turbo/intercooler is capable of? Our turbo, intercooler and manifold are rated at up to 19psi. That doesn't mean your engine will like it, though, and it doesn't mean your car won't act up. Personally, I wouldn't go higher than 16 without a fair amount of research into how the car is reacting (a data logger, as someone else suggested, and a lot of knowledge). With a good boost controller, just setting it to maintain stock boost should help with performance, and should be safe.

ok, first off, thanx for all the info, realy helped. Right now, i dont have the money for an unchip (im planning on getting one in a month or 2), so untill then, i geuss ill set the max at 15.5-16 to keep it safe with the profec A. Basically my setup is this: 2 presets on the boost controller, and a remote switch on the steering wheel, the standard preset will be at 9PSI or so, close to wastegate, and when i hit the button, i want to hit the most i can "safely", and im probably going to set that at 15.5-16. Ill only be using this about once a day (when that certain someone i.e-honda, mustang gives me the "look"). So, untill i get the Retard system and all, would 15 or 16 be a "safe" setting to keep my upper setting on?
Thx, Omair |

keep it stock unless it is cold out
hey
i have done some experimenting, as well as many discusions with shiv. any higher than the stock psi, and the car is really just making more heat. heat is bad. heat - loss of power. retaded timing, and overly rich feul delivert. wait until you have an EGT guage, and a stand alone or parallel EM system. then you can have control of the boost, feul and timing, and not worry about frying your turbo too early. besides all that, i feel absolutely no power gain the more boost i try. in fact it seems to get worse. just my 2 cents. josh |
