increasing power and mpg in a 2.2
Hi everyone,
I just picked up a '97 L wagon (with the 2.2 engine). From reading the fourms for a while, I've seen that certain mods actually increase the mpg as well as the power of the engine. Can this be done some of the simple bolt-ons (intakes, etc), or do I have to get more exotic, such as new pullys? |

I can only speak from experience on my car...but with my newly acquired Ganz Flow, plus a borla cat back, my mpg jumped from around 22 to 25 mpg.

Mods and Mpg
Try a lightweight crank pulley.
Yes, I know hp is not increased in the engine but you will have less hp turning the accesories and more to drive the wheels. Since you aren't burning any more fuel but gaining more usable hp at the wheels, I figured mpg should certainly go up. Especially in city driving since you'll have better throttle response. |

I have a 1997 Sedan with a 2.2L, and I have a intake, exhaust and underdrive pulley. I noticed more power, and not much change in MPG. Ganz's intake won't really work with the MAF. For good milage, leave you intake alone for the most part, and just yank out all the intake silencer stuff and drop a K&N panel filter. I have tried tons of intake set-ups, and the one I just mentioned is simple and works well. If I could go back to that set-up I would, but I have done a few things I can't reverse. One more thing, the MAF on the 1997 is different than on the 98. I have been really mean to my MAF and it still works fine. A few others that have the 97 have also mentioned no problems.
Also, if it still has the steel wheels get some lighter rims...that will help too. I hope this helps you. -Andy |

No, the gentle flowing curves of the S-type sticker actually decreases aerodynamic drag, and unlike the Intake Tornado, increases gas mileage. The tornado only decreases...your bank account!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I changed the CHAMPION spark plugs to NGK's...and that increased it by about 1 mpg. What I quoted.22 to 25 is my daily commute. I don't go on the highway much...so I'd assume it's more than that when I travel on the highways.
