Default Methanol Power Gains, Worth The Money?

To start I have read the sticky's. I have searched this forum. I have researched on google. I tried to do all of my homework before making this post and wasting anyone's time. I have researched several different kits: Aquamist, AEM, Devils Own, Snow Performance. I have read the differences between installing a 1 gallon tank vs a 5 gallon tank. I have researched which methanol blend to run.

I have also gotten a few prices. Seems like AEM kit + install + re-tune + taxes and puts the total cost at roughly $1,600.

My main question is how much power can one expect. Granted every car is different, every dyno reads different, every tuner tunes different, climate and elevation will affect numbers, I am well aware of all of that. My car is a 2017 STI with full bolt on's and a Cobb 20G turbo. Currently makes 360whp and 350wtq on a dyno jet at 20psi.

I have read that methanol adds roughly 10-15whp. I know it will reduce my IAT temperatures as well. I am just trying to debate it $1,600 is worth 10-15whp. Or if my research is off and methanol can yield slightly greater results.

So people with methanol injection. What did you pick up power wise after installing the kit.

Thank You for reading.

I find it hard to believe you would only net 10-15whp. Those numbers would make sense on a normally aspirated 2.0 liter. Your tuner would be able to advance the timing and boost yet retain knock resistance. The is not unlike running E85 but without the reduced energy content. I'm going with water meth port injection, the only way I can comfortably get 500whp out of my built FA20. Maybe some of the more experienced members can give you a number on power increase?

Don't use hp, use % gain as dynos and setups vary.

Before
236whp

After 50/50 meth with homebrewed kit with aquamist fast acting valve:
271whp

Picked up 14% power on 90 octane and a 2 liter. The further back you are with intercooler and octane the further forward water/meth will push you.

with your current 360 assuming you are on 93 octane, I wouldn't be surprise if u hit 390-400 whp.

tip: use two small nozzes not 1 big one

I like how you said use % power increase. Thank you for the information it is greatly appreciated.

Wouldn't small nozzles clog faster? If so why small?

Smaller jets should have a finer spray pattern-smaller drops.

"Technically" smaller would clog easier, but that's why you have a failsafe & filter.

I picked up a kit to help with the crappy gas we have locally. On 91 I was making 265whp and 300lbs.ft torque. With methanol I was about to get 300whp and 350lbs.ft torque. 13% increase.

If you are picking one up, I would advise getting something better than the AEM kit. While the kit and controller itself is okay, the flow meter failsafe is garbage. Mine stops working as soon as temps drop past -10 degrees Celsius.

Agreed. Check out torqbyte and aquamist

Went from 315/335
To 335/397

2015 wrx with full bolt on. TMIC, charge pipe, intake, j-pipe, erg, tgv, BPV...however running STI (spt) catback (not 3inch)...you guys think this would bottleneck me if I went meth (if it isn't already) ?

I'd probably say your stock turbo might be what will be limiting you if you were to use meth.

now, what if one were to use a Water/Meth set up purely as a carbon build up deterrent? Not trying to make big power. I'm pretty sure I would still need a tune of some sort with the Water/Meth. Is there just a base tune or stage 1 with Meth of do I have to go stage 2+ etc etc.?

You can run meth without a tune if you wanted to but you won't be getting much power gains without one. I've read of people using WMI strictly for the safety and the cooling benefits without changing their tune. You will run rich but you'll get better knock protection and cylinder cooling.

I've been running 26+ PSI on 91+ 50/50 Hydramist on a 35R for over 6 years and on a 30r for 5 years before that. It isn't just for power is also a great for lowering intake temps and making the air more dense but if you don't tune your car for it it will actually make you slower.

Picked up 40whp and similar torque. That's running straight methanol without water though, other setups will vary. Nowadays with Cobb flex fuel its not worth the investment if E85 and competent tuner are near you.

Methanol gains are comparable to E85 on the top end, not as much torque gain because it doesn't kick on until you're already in boost. E85 can take big timing gains to get into boost faster which translates to more torque and broader torque curve.

My car made 487whp / 470wtq on methanol / water injection via Devil's Own and 460whp / 400wtq on 92 pump all other factors being equal. Gains really depend on your engine and turbo setup

Gains depend on a lot of things. My build is a 9.1:1 CR 2.34L long rod motor. On 91 pump I comfortable tuned the engine to a safe 400 whp. The 9.1:1 CR doesn't like CA 91 octane at all. Pump and 50/50 meth put me @ 500 whp. The Aquamist allowed me to run much more boost and timing safely.

I'm going E85 now and may remove the meth kit though since I more than likely will no longer be knock limited.
