Dyno Test Of The 2020 Chevrolet C8 Corvette Reveals Huge Power Numbers

https://jalopnik.com/this-dyno-test-...-hu-1839225233

The folks at Motor Trend strapped the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette to a dynamometer to see if the 6.2-liter Small Block “LT2" V8 actually makes the stated 495 horsepower, 470 lb-ft. The websites findings?: “The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8 provided for all our testing produces more power than what Chevy claims.”

I’m always hesitant to write things like “Dyno proves that [insert automobile]’s horsepower numbers are underrated,” because there’s a lot that goes into horsepower certification, and there are quite a few factors that can cause results from one particular dynamometer to differ from those of another.

But Motor Trend, with input from its brilliant former Chrysler engineer and current technical director Frank Markus, discusses some of these concerns in the story.

Motor Trend conducted six dyno pulls on a production 2020 Chevrolet Corvette in fourth through sixth gears. Output ranged from 478 HP and 536 lb-ft at the wheels (that’s roughly 562 HP and 630 lb-ft at the crankshaft assuming a 15 percent drivetrain loss—note that Chevy engineers told Motor Trend that actual losses are lower) tested in sixth gear to 561 horsepower, 515 lb-ft of torque (or about 660 HP and 606 lb-ft at the crank assuming the same 15 percent loss figure) tested in fifth.

One possible explanation for the power discrepancy, Chevy apparently told Motor Trend, has to do with how the Corvette’s engine’s official power numbers were obtained. From the article:

The other explanation is that Chevrolet certifies most of its engines through the SAE, the Society of Automotive Engineers, which follows a strict set of rules and standards to determine the horsepower and torque ratings. In other words, the SAE acts as an independent party that’s present during the engine tests and is the one who determines the final output ratings. Their testing does not involve a simple pull from idle to redline, either. Rather, rpm are slowly ramped up and allowed to stabilize before accelerating further. This process results in significantly more heat generation than any single pull from our six dyno runs. For that reason, the engineers say, it’s not uncommon for single chassis dyno pulls to register higher output (and it is extremely unlikely any car will ever generate less than rated output).

The website even looked at the official SAE results:

A quick check of the SAE database reveals that the certification test of the 6.2-liter V-8 LT2 engine with the optional exhaust system took place at the Pontiac Engineering Center in Michigan on April 9, 2019. Jordan Lee, chief engineer of the Corvette’s engine, signed the certification on July 15—just three days before the reveal in Tustin. The engine was rated at 495 hp at 6,450 rpm and 470 lb-ft of torque at 5,150 rpm The vehicle code name 2020 Y2XX underwent three tests, and the power and torque graph looks similar to the one we had at the dyno.

Ultimately, Motor Trend isn’t sure why its numbers are so high, saying the dyno it used complied with the SAE procedure, and that this was the same dyno the team had used when testing a 2020 Ram 2500. The torque figure from that test, in case you are curious, wasn’t far from Ram’s claimed (but not SAE certified) peak figure. Still, despite a number of questions still unanswered, Motor Trend concludes that the Corvette tested does indeed produce more power than what Chevy claims.

This is all a bit odd, because if the Corvette’s engine is SAE certified to make 495 horsepower, then it’s supposed to make that much power—that’s a requirement.

As I’m not as well-versed in the area of power and torque certification as some, I called up Gary Pollak, a Program Manager at the Society of Automotive Engineers.

Pollak said when it comes to SAE certified horsepower, it’s “pretty tough to fudge the results,” and that “All production engines must be within 2 percent of the certification claim.”

He also said that automakers are allowed to claim an SAE certified horsepower number within 1 percent of the measured result—this might allow an automaker whose result was 499 horsepower to claim 500, for example.

“If somebody does run at that same kind of condition in 1349 and they see something that’s wider than that [2 percent] band,” Pollak told me, “they could make an appeal to SAE and we could actually re-test it and either revoke their certification or publish something...”

As for the numbers from the Motor Trend test, Pollak told me that this type of discrepancy is exactly what the SAE test procedure hopes to solve. “I’m not sure what conditions Motor Trend used, but the SAE standard basically tries to typify what the consumer would see” accounting for all relevant power draws, he told me, going on to say that while the dyno used in Motor Trend’s tests may have complied with the SAE procedure, “it’s all of the auxiliary conditions that they might not have accounted for.”

“There are so many conditions that are involved in the test...the numbers could be all over the map... It’s hard to compare from one dyno test to another,” he said. The SAE J1349 test, then, is meant to act as a sort of “datum” against which all engines can be measured so that they can be fairly compared. You can see the full list of SAE certified engines here. Among the engines on there is the supercharged 6.2-liter V8 found in the 2015 Dodge Hellcats.

That engine was rated at a peak power of 707 horsepower, and under the exact same conditions, the Corvette makes 495. Thus, it should be safe to assume that the Corvette’s motor is 70 percent as powerful.

But maybe it’s not safe to make that assumption? It’s easy enough to say simply “The test procedure was different,” but there’s always that chance that perhaps the test car really did have a more powerful engine. Motor Trend seems confident of this, though we may never actually know the truth.

Definitely check out their full story here.

I always thought the SAE certification just meant the engine had to make at least that much power, not that it was also the max it could make.

Not sure what the benefit of underating an engine is in this day and age, but BMW seems to consistently do it on their turbo motors.

Agreed, I assumed it was an “under worst possible case scenarios...bad gas, wear, temps, etc. The engine is guaranteed to make at least XXX HP” rating.

That being said, maybe a 5% upswing would be common, but the numbers being spoken about are blissfully confusing to me.

Default Gm Releases Official Full Performance Stats For 2020 Corvette

Quote:
Chevrolet Releases Full Performance Stats For 2020 Corvette Stingray

General Motors has released the full, official performance statistics for the 2020 Corvette Stingray, calling the car the “quickest in its history.”

We already knew the 2020 Corvette Stingray with the optional Z51 Performance Package would be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds, but now Chevrolet has confirmed it will also complete the quarter-mile in 11.2 seconds at 121 mph. As a reminder, the Corvette C8‘s naturally aspirated 6.2-liter LT2 V8 engine is rated at 490 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque in base form and 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque with the optional performance exhaust.

Meanwhile, the base 2020 Corvette Stingray without the Z51 package will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds flat and complete the quarter-mile in 11.2 seconds at 123 mph. We imagine the additional trap speed is due to the lack of a front splitter and rear wing, but the quarter-mile time likely remains the same between the Z51 and standard model due to the Z51’s superior acceleration. The Z51’s slightly quicker acceleration time comes from its shorter final drive ratio, stickier tires, electronic limited-slip differential and additional power and torque.

“The performance of the 2020 Stingray has far exceeded our expectations,” said Chevrolet vehicle performance manager Alex MacDonald. “Moving more weight over the rear wheels helps us get off the line quicker, but it’s the integration between the powertrain and chassis that really takes the performance to new levels.”

To achieve these claimed acceleration numbers, drivers must initiate a “performance launch” by putting the vehicle into Track mode, pressing the traction button (thereby putting the vehicle in Performance Traction Management mode for Magnetic Ride Control-equipped cars or Competitive driving mode for all others) and fully depressing the brake and accelerator pedal at the same time. When the revs climb to 3,500 RPM, they can then release the brake pedal and hold on tight.

GM says the standard eight-speed dual-clutch transaxle is a major contributor to the performance of the 2020 Corvette Stingray. Developed in conjunction with Tremec, the paddle-shift transmission was designed to provide “uninterrupted torque delivery” via smooth, lightning quick shifts.
Meanwhile, the standard mechanical differential is designed with “straight-line acceleration and dynamic handling” in mind and shares its common ring and pinion gear ratio of 3.55:1 with the Z51 Performance Package’s electronic differential. Compared to the mechanical diff, the eLSD is focused more on “ultimate control during track driving,” as opposed to straight-line acceleration. The mechanical diff has a final drive ratio of 4.9:1, while the effective final drive ratio of the eLSD is 5.2:1.

“The goal from the beginning was to design a transmission worthy of an exotic supercar that is fun to drive everyday,” GM’s global chief engineer of transmissions, Terri Schulke, said in a statement. “We achieved that goal by combining the best attributes of the LT2 and the DCT, and I think the impressive performance numbers speak for themselves.”

C7 vs the C8

https://www.motortrend.com/cars/chev...-track-review/

Quote:
The Corvette has long been the bad boy of the racetrack, the Bart Simpson of supercars. Rude, loud, cheap, unpredictable, and hard to handle; but fast and fun in its own brash way. Now, the Corvette has finally grown up. The C8 Corvette is more sophisticated, capable, and mature. And recently, we were honored with an exclusive 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Z51 track test at VIRginia International Raceway, driving the 911-beater in street and track alignment settings.

To our pleasant surprise, Chevy also supplied a 2019 C7 Grand Sport, which I consider to be the best-handling of all the C7 variations. At this test, Chevy required that a passenger ride along, and that victim was in fact Corvette lead development engineer Mike Petrucci.

If you're a follower of MotorTrend, you have heard my complaints about the way the C7 drives at the limit. Or more accurately, the way it drives over the limit of grip so suddenly. The car has the dubious distinction of being one of the only test cars in which I leave the stability control on, albeit in the minimal setting, as insurance against an embarrassing and possibly dangerous spin on my hot laps as a result of its sudden snap power oversteer.

Default 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8 Nurburgring Lap Time Is 7:28.30: Report

Quote:
From actual source of the rumor

C8 Corvette Stingray Nurburgring Time Revealed: Exclusive

The world never got to know the official Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time of neither the 650 horsepower C7 Corvette Z06 nor the 755 horsepower C7 Corvette ZR1. For reasons not entirely official, the Corvette development team was either plagued with bad weather, problems with the vehicles, and even a crash, whenever they attempted to set a reputable lap time around the 12.9 mile Green Hell with the last front-engine Corvette. Thankfully, as far as we understand it, the 495 horsepower C8 Corvette Stingray Z51 was able to set a hot lap around the German track without any such adversity, and we’re here to report on its performance.

Here it is: 7:28.30.

And, we’re sure you’re skeptical – but remember who we are here at MC&T. Our exclusive reports have clued you in that The C8 Corvette will have two hybrids before anybody else figured it out, we thoroughly explained why the infamous C8 Corvette dyno test was wrong, and we continue to chase the developing story of the C8 Corvette’s highly secure electronics architecture, and what it could mean for the aftermarket. In case you didn’t know who’s been making all of this Corvette news, you do now.

Is it the fastest Corvette around the track? No, absolutely not, but that’s not entirely the point here. Moreover, Chevrolet could still take another shot at an even faster lap time if they so choose, but the Corvette team will likely be busy with developing the next C8 variant, which we believe to be the Z06 and its flat-plane crank DOHC V8 engine.

Here’s arguably the most important measuring stick: the C7 Stingray Z51 managed a 7:39 in unfavorable weather conditions with a factory driver back in 2013.

Officially tested by Chevrolet, a C6 Corvette ZR1 with its 638 horsepower LS9 V8 managed a 7:19.63, while German auto magazine Sport Auto managed to fire off a lap time of 7:13.90 with a C7 Z06. Just as well, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE clocked an absurd 7:16.04 with a factory driver.

For further comparison, a 7:28.30 (factory tested) lap time puts the C8 Stingray in between the 2007 Porsche 911 GT2 (7:32) and BMW M4 GTS (7:27.88).

However, these vehicles represent the performance ceiling of what’s capable from the factory out of their respective platforms. The Stingray represents the floor for the C8 program. And judging by what’s coming down the pipe for the new mid-engine Corvette, that time is bound to improve radically.

Will Chevrolet be able to crack the seven-minute mark with the C8 Corvette as Porsche did with the 911 GT2 RS (which starts at nearly $300,000) with the Weissach Package? Time will tell, but considering how good General Motors is at building world-beating performance cars, we’re certainly not betting against the Detroit automaker.

From the Rumor Mill: C8 Corvette Stingray Z51 Lapped Nurburgring in 7:28.30

Rumors
Care to guess which is the fastest ‘Vette at the world’s most challenging racing circuit? That would be C7 ZR1, lapping the famed racetrack in seven minutes and four seconds. An even bigger question is how the ‘Vette fares with the engine in the middle, and the rumor mill keeps crunching more or less official numbers.
C8 Corvette

Without citing any source, Muscle Cars & Trucks exclusively reported a Nurburgring Nordschleife lap time of 7:28.30 for the C8 in Stingray flavor and with the Z51 option. Let those numbers sink in for a minute, then remember that the C6 ZR1 lapped the 12.9-mile Green Hell in 7:19.63 quite a few years ago.

MC&T claims that the C8 lap is a factory-tested lap, meaning that Chevy had a professional test driver behind the wheel. While the eighth-generation Corvette may not be the fastest out there on the ‘Ring, there’s no denying it’s miles ahead of the C7 Stingray Z51. In rather unfavorable conditions for grip, the preceding model managed to set a time of seven minutes and 39 seconds way back in 2013.

Make no mistake about it; Chevy is off to a great start with the mid-engined platform of the C8 model. The Stingray also happens to be great value for money for the 2020 model year, and the hype surrounding this baby is so high that the first model year of production has sold out before production has even started.

LT2 is the codename of the small-block V8 behind the driver’s and passenger’s backs, and as opposed to the LT1, you’re in for more power baby! The standard rating is 490 horsepower and 465 pound-feet at the crankshaft, representing an improvement of 40 horsepower and 10 pound-feet of torque. Opt for the sports exhaust or Z51 package, and the LT2 levels up to 490 ponies and 470 twerks.

Over the next few years, at least two more C8 variants will roll off the line in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The first is the Z06, which is expected to feature a flat-plane crankshaft V8 based on the C8.R racing car’s engine. As for the ZR1, an electrified front axle will translate to e-AWD and tons of get-up-and-go.

Default Latest Update From Leading Corvette Salesman Paints A Clearer Picture Of The C8

Quote:
Patience and understanding are more than necessary

by , on January 10, 2020, 09:30

If you’re waiting for an all new 2020 Chevy C8 Corvette, it’s only natural that you’re wondering when your allocation is going to come up. And, with production just now kicking off, it’s easy to wonder whether yours will be considered a 2020 or a 2021 model (and what pricing implications that will have on your bottom line.) I’m sure some of you have plenty of other questions too and now, thanks to Mike Furman – one of the most famous Corvette salesman in the world – we have some answers. Keep reading for a full update on the Chevy C8 Corvette and what’s going on behind the scenes.

Chevy Isn’t Producing C8’s Slated for Customer Delivery Yet

One of the most important things we’ve learned from Mr. Furman’s latest e-mail update is that Chevy’s Bowling Green Assembly Plant is exclusively producing C8 Corvettes, but none of them are going to make it into customer’s hands. According to Furman, all of the C8’s produced so far and those produced through the end of January, are all “captured test vehicles.” Now, no clarification beyond that was mentioned, but in most cases, these are the vehicles used to fine-tune the production process, make sure everything lines up the way it should, etc. Chevy could have other uses for these vehicles, but usually, they are destroyed or recycled once their purpose has passed.

If Your Allocation Comes After the 2021 Model Year Switch, You’ll Probably Pay More

We all know that the initial 2020 models will be cheaper than subsequent model years, however, the difference in cost between the 2020 and 2021 models has yet to be revealed. In his latest E-mail, Mike Furman raised a very important point.

Pricing for 2021 models will probably go up, but historically GM has not raised the price by more than $2,500 year-to-year.

So, it won’t be outrageously more expensive if you receive a 2021 model over a 2020. And, as pointed out by Furman, the C8 Corvette landed at some $10,000 less than anyone expected anyway, so you’re getting one hell of a deal for a world-class sports car anyway.

C8 Corvette Production For Customer Cars Starts in the First Week of February

If you’re lucky enough to have one of the first customer car allocations (you’re probably not,) you could be riding around in your new Vette very soon.

The production of customer-bound cars starts in the first week of February and GM will begin delivery sometime after that.

And, if you were considering skipping the museum delivery because of not having paint film protection for the ride hone, you can now get XPEL applied at NCM Motorsports Park before you head our on your maiden voyage.

Chevy Is Limited Engine Torque for 500 Miles Because you Can’t Follow Instructions

When news about Chevy reducing torque in the C8 Corvette during the break-in period hit the net, some people lost their minds. Well, there’s a damn good reason that Chevy has to do it, and it boils down to the fact that people just don’t honor the break-in period as they should. As quoted on Mid-Engine Corvette Forum it has to do with ensuring that the break-in period is honored and, while torque will be reduced by 25-30 percent for around 500 miles, it doesn’t really affect performance that much:

“For the 8th generation Corvette, we have taken it a step farther. With more weight on the rear, the car has more traction and we take advantage of that with more aggressive gearing. That translates into more torque multiplication and more loads in the driveline. We decided for the first 500 miles to limit maximum torque in first and second gears. The torque reduction is roughly 25 to 30% depending on which transaxle (standard or Z51) and which gear. That may sound like a big reduction, but in reality the car is still really fast.”

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Kentucky State Police say two General Motors employees were arrested last Wednesday night in Bowling Green after a trooper caught them racing in new Corvettes on Lovers Lane.

Alexander Thim, 27, of West Bloomfield, Michigan and Mark Derkatz, 30, of Winsdor, Ontario, are each charged with reckless driving, racing a motor vehicle on a public highway and speeding 26 mph or more over the speed limit.

According to arrest citations for both men obtained by WNKY, at 11:20 p.m., a trooper noticed three 2020 Corvettes turn onto Lovers Lane. Derkatz, traveling in a white Corvette, achieved a speed of 100 mph in the 45 mph zone, while Thim, traveling in a red Corvette, achieved a top speed of 120 mph in the 45 mph zone, according to the citations. The citations note that the driver of the third Corvette, which was blue in color, was not participating in the racing.

When both drivers were pulled over, they alerted the trooper that they were employees at General Motors and had just been at Cue Time Cocktails and Billiards, according to the citation.

Both men were lodged in the Warren County Regional Jail and released on a $1,000 bond, respectively.

In a statement provided to Automobile Magazine, General Motors said the following:

“We are aware of an incident involving our test vehicles and are currently investigating. Safety remains our overriding priority at General Motors. We have no further comment at this time.”

Not if that labor union has anything to do with it. Not sure if you remember, but a couple guys on Chrysler’s manufacturing line were caught smoking pot and drinking beer on their lunch break. Guess who fought for them and kept them hired.

Red Corvette --> 120 mph --> Baby you're much too fast

And the ride was so smooth, it must’ve been a limousine.

Yes. The Chrysler guys were suspended, but retained their jobs. A friend at GM (line worker) was assaulted. Punched in the face and head slammed into a locker. UAW decided it was his fault for instigating. They suspended him for 2 days. Other guy got nothing. UAW didn't even file a police report for the incident. He "instigated" by kicking the bolt cutters out of the hand of the guy trying to break into his locker and steal his personal belongings. Best part is that the UAW decided it's safe for them to continue working side-by-side...literally.

Not UAW.

Correct. They are non-union engineers.

I can think of two reasons per Union and Company CBA’s (speculating here):

-One hour of personal time is granted per standard work shift. If off company premises, personal time means exactly that. If returning to work, someone suspected them or claimed to have seen them doing an illegal activity, well, they were on “personal time”. My company’s contract specifically states no drugs, alcohol, weapons/firearms on company property or in company vehicles.

That is a separate issue from working while under the influence. If the company has no random drug testing policy, there’s legally not a way to prove they returned to work under influence of drugs or alcohol (because lawyers are good at pointing out that a witness is not a certified drug testing kit).

-Two, and the easier one to get out of:

The employees who were caught smoking pot and drinking beer went home sick during their lunch break. They got a doctor’s excuse and didn’t finish their shift. So they weren’t on company property. Even if they were on company grounds, generally, one union member shouldn’t be turning in another member. Like for disciplinary actions, it has to be a manager outside of the Union.

These are just plausible scenarios, as a few of my coworkers were wrongly terminated by the company. They all were reinstated and got back pay for the time they were off. As disgusting as it seems, wrongful termination happens, and many employees would have their jobs back if they were union members.

IMHO, which doesn’t matter, one of my coworkers shouldn’t have been hired back. He assaulted a competitor’s employee. But, agreed to go to anger management counseling. He still had issues after returning to work.

The other few guys were playing basketball at a public park while on lunch. The supervisor suspended them and the regional manager fired them.
Well, it turns out, playing a pickup game of three-on-three is perfectly fine because it was during their “one hour of personal time”.

There is probably verbiage in their Union agreement about driving infractions while using a company vehicle. There has to be. Like, you won’t lose your job if you get a parking ticket or for exceeding the speed limit and get a minor infraction. Being arrested for drag racing...? They should seek legal representation.

On topic comment:

I can’t wait to see the new Vette on the road!
