Question Trying to decide on an exhaust

I just bought a legacy yesterday with an ej22 in it and its a 5spd. So that means exhaust for me! I had been searching around and asking questions but so far i have not found a thing. The car has single port headers and i was originally going to go borla if it was dual port. So my question is there is a guy here in my town that does great exhaust work and for a great price. So i was going to have him build me and exhaust from the stock header back 2.25" into a seires 40 flowmaster. Will i get a good sound out of it the boxer rumble, will it improve my HP slightly?

Don't go flowmaster. Does not sound good IMO. Here's my single port exhaust clip with an OBX exhaust. Some claim that you can not get a good burble with single port, but I would argue otherwise. I switched to a WRX muffler and was not entirely please with the results. I have a hooker aerochamber that will hopefully be installed this week.

Wow, that sounds really good for a 96 L... do you think just the muffler would sound generally the same?

Just the muffler without a resonator would sound like that. It was a crush bent pipe from midas with the OBX muffler on it. I wouldn't recommend it on a wagon though. It droned alot when you let off the gas and let the engine brake. I think the tip was just too short and the sound wasn't exiting from behind the car but rather under the car and so it reverberated through the hatch.

The sound clip is why I say no to flowmaster. It sounds like the engine is flowing into a trash can. The sound is really distant and garbled. It's hard to make subaru's not sound good, but a few of the big truck/car mufflers seem to ruin the sound.
