Question Bad Battery or Alternator???

I got up this morning and got ready to go to work, got in my WRX and the car didn't start. I looked at the trip odometer and it was reset to 0.0. Obviously the battery is toast. I push-started the car and it ran. How can I tell if it's just the battery or if the alternator is the culprit. I could take it to Autozone, but I'm a good 20 miles away from my closest one and I would hate for the car to die on me that far away from home if it is the alternator. Any other way of finding out?? I will really appreciate it.

BTW, since I'm getting a new battery as a result of this, are Optimas the way to go??

Ya- I got a red top optima & love it - Just had to extend the pos cable.

If it was your altenator, It's likely your car wouldn't stay running for long - so If your battery is charging up enough after the push start to run everything & start up again, chances are the battery is the problem.

WRC is right, if it was the alternator then the car would die soon after the push start. The battery is really only used when you start the motor, anything after that the alternator is the one giving out the power. Try picking up a voltmeter and check how many volts are left in the battery.

Had a similiar problem. I have an Apexi AFC which gives a batt volt meter and my batter was running really low until finally it wouldnt start back up. The cause? Needed distilled water in the cells. Filled up the battery (through those caps on top) and now runs like a champ. It's always the little things that get ya.

When I went to test drive my new wrx, the tack and boost guage didnt work after starting and the car was down on power. Bottom line was the alternator had crapped out. When replaced with a new one she ran like a champ.
