So I changed my clutch fluid yesterday...
... and this is what the old stuff looked like...
After a long pull up the Coquihalla, we stopped for a quick break ... started the car again and the clutch went 1/4 of the way to the floor without any engagement whatsoever! Crapola, crapola... first stop was the pet store for some aquarium tubing, 2nd stop was crappy tire for some DOT-4 fluid. Seems to have solved the problem for the time being but it still feels like there's an air bubble in there, or something needs lube. Err so the moral of the story is, if you haven't changed out your clutch fluid or brake fluid recently, maybe a good idea. What with this temperate rain forest we live in, and the fact that the RS hood scoop drain is located right above the clutch slave cylinder, the boiling point of your clutch fluid might be lower than you expected. I've got 75000km on a 2001 RS, btw... |

Probably -- it's a standard bleed valve. HOWEVER, I dunno if I'd risk it. The clutch slave is sitting right on top of the tranny and it stays hot for long periods of time (unlike brakes that get hot and get cold pretty quickly, unless you drive like TMR). Those speed bleeders have a spring-loaded valve, right? I dunno how long that spring is going to hold up under constant high temp. And suddenly losing your clutch would be really, really bad.
By the way, I should mention that the airbox does have to be removed for easier bleeding, unless you've got really fly elf wrenches or something... I gotta grease up the fork and piston next time I'm down there. That part is sure subject to a lot of abuse, located between the tranny heat and the hood scoop drain (darn non-functional hood scoops!)... |

Oh and the clutch pedal has a weird spring mechanism, so it will stick to the floor and has to be brought back by hand when pumping. Freaked me out the first time I saw that!

I think the brakes goes through hotter temp. than the engine would (at least my driving), so I think if the spring was to loose tension it would be on the brakes. I'll go buy another pair next week and take a look at it. From what it seems it is the same as the one on the brake.
Plus I don't have the air box anymore.. and it is very open. |
