Default Mixed Tires?

To start things off.

YES. I SEARCHED

Anyways. I know you are supposed to have equal tread wear on a set of tires, otherwise the diff, er, explodes?...or whatever.

Question is, will different brands of tires screw things up too? Same tread wear, but completely different brands of tires.

Yes, even differing brands can have negative effects on an AWD system.

Also, you should be able to check your Owner's Manual for further information.

Putting around town isn't a big deal as long as the tires are the same circumference. However, handling will most likely be affected and probably not for the better. Definately not recommended for a performance application.

Default I would be careful

Even the same size tire from different manufacturers can very significantly in circumference. Do your Diff a favor, and use only the same tires
IMHO...
