where to put Hide a Key/ Locked out yesterday.
Hey folks,
Yesterday I had the unfortunate opportunity to use Subaru's road side assistance plan to open my door when I had it auto lock the doors as I got out to scrape the car while warming up the engine. I can't get it to repeat, but it was an obvious autolock. I unlocked all the doors, through my bag in the back seat, opened the drivers door, leaned in and started the car (I love not having to have my foot on the brake to do this), got out and shut the door, and heard all 4 locks click. But of course now that I'm at home and have a spare key, I can't get this to happen again. I have a call into the dealer to try and figure something out. I guess I will have to roll the window down when I do this in the future, just in case. Anyway, in the meantime. I'd like to find a good spot for a hide a key, and the valet key, just in case I do something stupid like this again. Anybody have any suggestions? I'm in snow country, so most of the bottom is no good, I used to use the back bumper when I had steel ones on old cars. I never found a good spot on the Jetta I had before, but I didn't look real hard since the autolock didn't kick in until I hit 10mph. Thanks in advance all, John

I wasn't even aware that the new Impreza's had that feature... Do you have a '12 or '13?

It's a 2012, and I didn't think it had autolock either. But, I can't think of another way all the doors would have been locked at once with out it. I took my time getting my bag in the back, is there some sort of timer, but wouldn't that have been canceled when I opened the drivers door? I thought maybe I had accidentally hit the lock button, but then it would have both locked right away, and with the way our cars work, it would just have unlocked right away anyway. Any ideas.
The funny thing is there is a long post on here about someone trying to get the car to do this, so they can have there car locked while it is warming up, and they can't. And then I can't think of a situation where I would want the car to do this, and it did it. Also, any thoughts on the hide a key? |

Don't hide-a-key. The bad guys know where to look and it will probably have insurance consequences.

My guess is you hit the door lock button inadvertently or on the key somehow. Chances are you will never be able to replicate this situation, so don't bother with the hide-a-key because your eternal vigilance while you try to figure out how the car auto-locked (it didn't) will prevent you from ever needing it again.

I am very certain that our cars whether it maybe the '12 or '13 does not have an auto lock feature or function.

Considering that the car complains and refuses to do so when I try to use the keyless entry to lock it with the trunk open (mine's a '13), I somehow doubt there's an auto-lock function. If anything, it might be an accidental bump of the lock button on the door (although I can't remember if doing so while any door is open would disallow that function - but that doesn't seem to be the case, considering the OP mentioned that he heard the doors lock upon closing the door). Maybe there's something loose in the door that caused the locking mechanism to trigger?
I agree with the others, though - hiding a key on the car is generally a bad idea. |

The autolock was the first thing I noticed was missing on the car when I first drove it. I don't know what alarms the dealers use in other states but here we have the Pursuit system (the dealership puts it on everycar), so my car now has autolock. The only problem is it never locks when you want it to lol

Thanks for all the advice. This was one of those times when not answering the question was actually better then answering it. I assumed the valet key had a chip in it as well and couldn't be made smaller, but if it doesn't, I will get just a metal one made up for my wallet.
As far as the auto lock. I know our cars don't have it, but I can't figure out what happened. I also know our memory plays tricks on us, so maybe I didn't hear all 4 doors lock, just the drivers. But I still can't figure out how even that would have happened. Oh, well. I guess it's just a live, learn, and move on thing. Thank you all again, John |

The valet key does have a chip in it, so the valet can start and move your car, but to open a door, all you need it the metal. A small key, that easily fits in a wallet or coin pocket on your jeans, for the door is all that's needed if you just need to get into the car.
Some cars even come with a credit card sized plastic key for just the door. I don't know if those can easily be made. |

Well the $2.99 fix was getting just a metal key made for my wallet and keep a spare chipped key hidden in the car, just in case. I know this is overkill, but it's giving me a bit more piece of mind, so it's cheap insurance.
Thanks again all, John |

Good that you found a solution. Probably going that route (simple metal key to open the door) when I go to the beach. Just got to hide the real key very well somewhere in the car.

I got into a habit of always rolling the window down when I want to get out with the key still in the ignition. I realize this method may not work well for colder places or where it rains a lot.

I did this exact same thing on a previous car.. had to call the wife to bring down the extra key while my car sat there idling.
Since then I roll down the window or don't shut the door all the way. |

Guys you seem right in the only way I have ever gotten it to repeat (doors locked with key in the ignition) is to hit the lock button on the key while I had the door open and then start the ignition. And with gloves on, I could see how I might have accidentally done that.
Like I said, I would have sworn I heard a click right after I closed the door, but I don't know how this would have happened. So, I'll chalk it up to my memory not being great at a time of high stress. And thanks all those for sharing your similar stories, makes me feel like I'm not the only dumb a$$ out there. |
