Default Need help with CEL p0440 (evap emissions control)

This is on my 1997 brighton. I got this cel on a road trip the other day. As I understand it this Cel happens when the pressure in the gas tank is leaking. I have been working on the trunk of my car doing some audio and I gutted everything to do some matting. I noticed a hose and wondered what it was. I pulled on it and it just poped of. I know it has something to do with the gas tank, but I don't know what. So I plugged it back in. I then notice this morning that the gas tank is being really picky about letting fuel in. I can't even pump gas anymore without holding the gas pump nozel on a really slow setting. Could someone try to explain the gas tank system and what I did to mess it up.
Good stuff I found in some manuals.

Reset the ECU and see if it comes back, if it doesn't you're golden. If it does, then you've got a problem.

You could also try this thread: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...hreadid=298963

Or try a search, there are numerous threads about CELs on here.

I know exactly what the cel means. How ever I don't know what caused it. Yes I searched read and found VERY little. Most people with this cel never seem to be able to fix it. I would like to get some insite on how the subaru's fuel tank works so I can solve this problem. For some reason my gas tank isn't taking in fuel anymore.

Have you tried resetting the ECU? That worked for me when I had this code...

Definitely try that, I would bet that the line that you found, removed and then re-attached was a line to or from the charcoal canister. It may even be the stupid gas cap -- mine hadn't been touched in two days when I got this code. The tank is a sealed system, if any air gets in, it throws a code.

Here's a link that might help you, too: http://www.obd-codes.com/p0440

The seal on the gas cap does cause issues like this, but that wouldn't explain why you had problems filling. If you did pull off a hose and reattach it, might take another look and see what kind of condition the hose (and it's connection point) are in. If the hose is all rotted up (a la intake PCV) then pulling it off may have broken a seal and leading to your pressure leak.

Thanks, I havn't had the gas filling problem since. It may have been the pump (and really crappy timming) I'm just going to pick up a new gas cap the next time i'm at the dealer.
