I'm going to drain and measure what's in my engine this weekend, fill it with 5.3 quarts of 0w20 and see what the level reads. Soa still hasn't called me back. They are supposed to be finding a replacement drivers seat or at least the seatback. The oil issue is worrisome for me just due to how slowly soa and the dealer respond to warranty claims.
I haven't put enough miles on it yet to check for any lowering of the level per the dipstick, so I figure if soa won't look into the oil consumption thing I will do it myself. And keep receipts.

oil level?
So after reading all of this it got me wondering what my oil level is in my brand new sport limited. My car only has 350 miles on it but I decided to go check it out as a baseline to monitor the oil consumption...
I checked the dip stick and it is WAY above the max line... like up to the little twist in the dip stick (~2.5 - 3 inches above the full mark)... what should I do? This isnt normal right? The car is running fine so far. Last edited by Aggie Subaru; 06-04-2012 at 07:28 PM. |

Assuming, of course, you waited a couple of hours after driving to check it to make sure that the oil is overfilled. |

My dealer waay over-filled mine- I never had any issues before this happened. I took it back and they drained some out to the full mark +/-. A few thousand miles later, I'm having low oil indicator lights and low dipstick readings. A fresh change now, they still have it way over the full mark. Watching it like a hawk.

I figured out long ago you can't trust anyone to do mechanic work. If you don't do it your self you have to double check behind people. The GMC dealer made my buddies brand new truck start smoking by under filling the oil time and time again that led to a 10k mile 5.3L motor smoking like a 300k Honda. His fault for not checking behind a $9.99 oil change. My wife had free oil changes for 80k on her new scion she bought. She kept complaining about "smelling gas" at red lights. When I finally 1k miles later went to check it out the dealer had left the oil cap off and 1qt of oil was all over the headers. I was pissed off to say the least and never do I let someone else do anything unless I watch it first hand or double check everything they did. If "certified" dealers do stupid **** like this everyday what do your neighbor hood tire stores with guys making minimum wage do?

Tis true- dealers do suck. And I will be doing my own oil services in the future.

No dealer oil changes for me, not even the free one. I don't understand the reports of dealers getting oil all over the engine bay when changing the filter. I had paper towels at the ready, but not a drop spilled beyond the filter's gasket.

I'd rather go to Valvoline or some quick oil change place where you can watch them, and they actually show you the oil level. I'm still going to change oil myself though.

I'm gonna raise hell too, they still haven't gotten back to me about this. Sucks, but at least we have a forum to discuss how to peel the rinds off our lemons!

I've spoken to Chris, I believe. But I'm waiting on Desire', who has been handling my case since february. She apparently has a TON of vacation time buit up as she's hardly ever there. Last word was that she was getting her higher-ups involved since my dealer blatantly called her a liar.

Hey guys,
here is my two cents. I have a 2010 special edition, cobb stage 1, always dealer maintenance on schedule. Started to notice oil burn at 10k with Mobile1 5w-30, loss about .5qt/1k miles. then I switched to shell rotella t6 full synthetic 5w-40, burn dropped to .5qt/3k miles. then just for a test, I used factory oil for one change period, nearly no burn. it's logical that motor oil thickness contribute to burn ratio. one thing for sure, rings are not 100% sealed, some oil into crankcase actually protects engine. peace Last edited by eagland; 06-18-2012 at 02:11 AM. |

One thing for sure- if the rings aren't seated on my brand new car, its logical to think the car is a pos.

It is common practice to use Regular oil to break in an engine and ensure things seat properly. Maybe our cars need that? |

The warranty requires 0w-20 including during break-in.
If the engine is burning oil after following the recommended guidelines I would be first in line with SOA to get the engine replaced under warranty. Mine isn't burning oil, so it isn't an issue for me and clearly not an issue with the new engine for everyone. |

I used the amsaoil oE but it was only in the car for 2000 miles. It didn't burn any. The dealer changed it at 3750, still no consuming of oil. The oil level stayed the same till around 6k. And I called soa before I did the oil change with the amsoil to make sure it wouldn't void the warranty. It doesn't.
As to any questions or comments by auskip, well, he is on my ignore list with uncle scotty. |

by not mean I am an expert on this topic, but I talked to few professional about this.
on a true track race car, tips of ring has overlay, they form a complete closure for better seal. on most street car, tips of ring meet but has a slight gap. that's where oil escape at high rpm. at high pressure oil gets pushed into crank case then PCV push into intake manifold then burned, under vacuum condition when down shift, vacuum can suck oil vapor from crank case and valve camshaft. EJ257 boxer engine cylinders are horizontal, oil vapor doesn't settle as fast as In-line or V block, that means more vapors are flowing in crankcase which maybe sucked out. peace |

Oil consumption (even a quart between changes) is not normal in this car. I know because I have one, with Amsoil in it, and it is not burning oil at all.
So it is not designed to consume oil in normal driving, and it is not consuming oil in normal driving as a byproduct of being a horizontal engine. |
