Some initial performance testing -- Baja T 5 speed
I have been testing my baja turbo 5speed a bit over the past week or so, using a Tazzo, which is similar to a Gtech, but has dual accelorometers.
First, some background on the Tazzo's accuracy: I have run this at the track with two different cars (my camaro ss and my contour svt), and compared them to street times using the Tazzo. I also used the tazzo to practice launches in the camaro, and improve my 60' times. It has proven to be very accurate and repeatable. It tends to error on the conservative side, about .1 and 1 mph slow in most cases. So for what its worth, here are my initial results: Most tests done with 1/2 to 3/4 tank gas, also I am in high elevation, I weigh about 210 myself, and my baja has every heavy option in the book (bed extender, bed cover, etc..) Launching most effective at about 4k rpm slipping the clutch. Dumping the clutch or launching higher breaks traction at least on the rear wheels, possibly all four (not sure, can hear wheel screech only from the rears). The cars top end is not great stock imho, and if you shift too high and too quickly the shift is rubbery, a combination of shifter and clutch...anyhow: Best 0-60: 6.41 and 6.52 seconds, both achieved by accidentally hitting the limiter on the 2-3. If I make the 2-3 shift, it goes up to 6.9, on an average of 2.02 to 2.07 60' time. if the launch is not good, it ends up being 7.3 to 7.4 every time (2.17 or greater 60') 1/4 mile: Best was 15.05 @ 87.9 mph, but I scraped off the limiter on the 1-2, on a 2.07 60'. Worst, on a 2.24 60' was a 15.58 @ 84.8 mph. I noticed that if you screw up any of the shifts, the car tends to bog bad when you engage the next gear. The snow here has kinda cut off further testing at the moment, but I plan on trying again. The car feels faster than these numbers, I am especially not pleased with the trap times. Launching obviously needs some more work, I should be able to do much better than that. Its kinda hard staging if any cars are around (which is all the time). I really did not get any really clean runs in for either test. Probably towards the end of the year I will take it to the track and see how the numbers stack up. Anyhow, your results may vary (and hopefully do, mine kinda suck!). **see update below!**

I noticed that the 0-60 runs are great ... but the 1/4 mile run is very dissappointing ... The weight of the car really holds it back... A few more ponies or a little less weight will make a big difference...
Good luck with your tests and keep us posted... Maybe you can give us a dyno result also ... Last edited by BajaBratBoy; 03-18-2004 at 09:07 AM. |

Yep, there is a new 4 wheel capable dyno here, redshift motorsports, and I plan on having the car dynoed as well.

**UPDATE**
I worked until about 7:30pm last night, and since most everyone had gone home I decided to try the long straight stretch of road behind the industrial partk here. A couple of practices on the launch, and I made the first 1/4 mile run: Reall taking my time with the launch --launching at 3500 (which is close to peak torque), slipping clutch, full tank of gas, 31 degrees outside (vs. about 40 of previous testing), also shifting at 6500rpm instead of trying to shift at 7k. 1.99 60' 14.78 1/4 89.8 MPH I turned around, and ran the same exact stretch the other way 2.01 60' 14.66 1/4 91.4 MPH I have no doubt now that with a proper launch, we can hit 14s easily bone stock. Im encouraged by the results, and now I cant wait to get it to the track. |

Hey I think my friends and I raced behind the same industrial park! When I get mine i'm gonna test it as well.. I really have no options so mine should be a lil lighter..maybe faster?
