Its really nothing to worry about, youll be safer and your not exactly going for lap times out there are you? Youll be stoked bacause its really cold right now up here and your PSS will probaby become hard plastic during the cold. Also, its the sierra, a storm could come out of nowhere at any time. Theres still lots of standing ice on the roads that hasnt melted or gotten scraped up, anywhere with a north facing aspect will likely be kinda icy on the road, esp up to the resort. Its definitely not worth changing back over to PSS. Your snow tires wont melt or wear any more than they would otherwise.

Hey guys quick question...

I have 18s 245/40 as summer performance. My winter set up is 17s 235/45. Is it kosher?

I know that going down a size you need to increase the sidewall to maintain similar wheel size but is 45 enough?

Overthinking it? I just don’t want to mess with the speed being off or the drivetrain strain due to the difference...which is negligible right?

Yes, there's no comparison there. At least up here in the PNW it's either wet or icy most of the time in the cold months, and the Michelins are not able to generate the fun grip either way.

245 X .4 X 2 = 196

235 X .45 X 2 = 211.5

Diameter of the 245's = 196 + 18(25.4) = 653.2 mm

Diameter of the 235's = 211.5 + 17(25.4) = 643.3 mm

That's about a 1.5% difference. Not bad, as long as all four tires are the same.

Use this^^^ plug in your stock size and your desired size to see the difference, generally you dont want to be over 0.2" taller per radius, 0.4 per diameter. If youre using tirerack, view their preferred packages, that usually gives the best size options that work. 225 50 17 sounds a bit tall.

I have a set of winter tires that are about 3 years old. I recently got a flat that can't be repaired. If I get a new tire shaved, would it wear quicker than the older tires?

if it does wear any faster the difference would be very little

Found someone selling OEM 2012 WRX wheels with General Arctic tires and TPMS sensors.. got him down to $500.

Is that even a good price? It feels like a good price to me. My only concern is that my 2012 WRX ive been using with All Seasons year round is probably going to be traded in when MY2020 comes out (assuming hatch returns). Does anyone have any educated guesses on whether the 2012 stock wheels would be compatible with whatever subaru uses on a MY2020 WRX? Not a big deal if I need to slap taller tires on - but more the 5x100 bolt pattern and diameter compatibility.

The WRX has already been switched over to 5x114.3 for the 2015+ models. I think that's the direction Subaru is aiming overall lately. Not extremely likely they'd switch back to 5x100 for the next generation.

That said, at least here in MN $500 would be a good price for those wheels+tires even for only a few seasons, at least dependent on the tread depth - especially so considering we're already in winter.

Those Arctics came with around 12/32" of tread from the factory; most winters are toast by 5-6/32"; so if they have at least 9/32" of tread you have at least 1/2 the life left.

Youll be able to sell those off just fine, prob even get your money back.

Ive milked Alti's even farther than that. The tire that the goodies are only the first half are the blizzaks, most of the others, the compound doesnt change but the blizzzak does. Shallow tread comes into play of course, but at least you still have winter compound on there. The general is one of the couple Ive gotten 3 winters from.

Measure the depth with a depth gauge, if theyre at least half left, Id say its worth 500 if the wheels are in good shape. Wheels, tires, tpms for 500, if the tires will realistically work for this winter, its good IMHO.

Need help fast!!

Wheels i bought above I got even cheaper becuase the guy forgot there was a bubble on a tire and the tread wasnt that evenly worn..

Anyway, a buddy has a set of 205/50R17 snow tires he will sell me for $50

According to Tirerack, the alternate winter tire size for the 2012 WRX is 205/50R17.. GREAT!!! but.. Im looking at the tires Tirerack is listing and the ones my friend has and they say the acceptable rim width max is 7.5"

The 2012 wheels are 8"...

So do they fit? Or is tire rack recommending wheels that wont fit?

They will fit on 8" wheels. It won't be ideal, but still usable. There is the possibility of irregular tread wear. There will be zero sidewall protection of the wheel flange against curb rash.

Hi -

My daily commute is only 2 miles, but I make regular trips to Boston, Albany (NY) and Central Connecticut.

I have original stock rims on my car and I'd like to have a set of dedicated rims, but that may be cost prohibitive for me right now. So, I'd like a recommendation for a dedicated set (rims & tires) and for tires only using my current rims.

Thanks!

I just want to update you and thank you for your help. I have zero experience with studded tires, but I can not believe how good these Nokia's are. So far the most snow has been around 8" and to be honest, I turned around when the traction control came on, this one time, because of my wife. We were trying to make it to a local lake here where the road is not maintained and elevation is around 5000 feet. 13 miles from the main road. The snow was getting higher and higher and I didn't want to receive a Darwin Award. Hardly anyone drives up there in the winter. Anyway, so far the tires have not spun once. One time I even turned off the traction control just to see what would happen. While I didn't floor it, I did step on it pretty aggressively and the car just took off. We feel extremely safe, even on icy roads, which we have plenty of. The car just handles fantastic.

Again a big thank you to you!!!!

For some reason, I'm unable to post a picture from my iPad Pro

If "Most important elements = snow, slush, wet roads" then it sounds like performance winter tires may fit your needs the best.

Go to tirerack.com plug your data and see what is available and recommended.

There should be winter performance in your OE size and I think 205/55R16 is an option too (with new wheels).
