I've got a Sharp Aquous 70" that's about 10yr old. I'm keeping my "dumb" TV as long as possible.

Happy to upgrade to whatever the latest device is rather than forced obsolescence on a TV.

TV OEMs are somehow under the impression everyone upgrades TVs about as often as a cell phone.

I upgraded my parents TV (Sony Bravia LCD) last year, and literally could not give away the Sony. Perhaps the fact that it weighed 60+ lbs may have contributed to it.

Unfortunately, this seems to be the case. I have only replaced phones due to not having software being supported. Hoping to get 10+ years out of this TV.

I guess I should be lucky that the TV lasted 12 years.

Planned obsolesce...... what a PITA.
Can you still use all of your apps on a 12 year old Android phone with outdated OS? How many computer manufacturers still offering driver support or any other software upgrades after 12 years?

It's not really planned obsolescence when software is past it's end of life support.

I had a dumb Samsung 46" LCD that just wouldn't die. Great colors and the sound from the speakers was really good. Its only problem was that the backlight was getting dim. I only noticed when I had a side by side of this TV vs a Sony LED.
The Sony has crappy speaker and sound so I ended up purchasing a soundbar for it, which also sucked, so ended up with a full blown 5.2.1 system. That upgrade was worth it.

Hoping my current Sony dies so I can get a 65" OLED.

That's actually sort of the definition of planned obsolescence. Instead of selling a monitor, they put in a computer that they only plan to support for 5-10 years. Then call it "Smart".

I would much rather buy a monitor with a few inputs and a separate device to deliver content.

I'm impressed you made it 12 years.

My LG TV purchased in 2014 stopped getting support in 2021 when they rolled out the new OS. The apps already on it worked fine until they rolled out a new updates that my TV didn't get the message about.

His TV is still the same exact monitor with the same exact inputs to deliver content through. Nothing about it seems to be designed as the weak point to be the component that fails before everything else, which is what I see as "planned obsolescence."

Do you complain that Windows 7 computers you bought 15 years ago aren't supported because of "planned obsolescence?" Are you upset that you can't run games through MS-DOS because Microsoft planned for it to be obsolete by now?

It's the clash between computers/phones where evolution is rapid and changes in capabilities are significant every 6-12mo...

...and a device (TV) which has traditionally been a durable consumer item like an appliance that lasts 10-20 years.

But of course the real motivation for TV OEMs to develop smart TVs with apps is so they can sell all the data they collect. If they couldn't have monetized that data, they would never have made smart TVs.

I just picked a good brand from what was on sale at Costco. I don't need all the fancy stuff so my 75" Samsung was $600 I think

Even the 75" Samsung Crystal from Costco is a Smart TV. There are no dumb TVs anymore...

It's not really planned obsolescence when software is past it's end of life support.
It was more of an inconvenient gripe, with the solution being quite simple to use an external source for Netflix rather than the TV. In a moment of FU Netflix/Samsung for the inconvenience I bought the new TV our of spite (it was part of the eventual plan, but not yesterday).

I don't replace a cell phone unless absolutely needed, either the software isn't supported, or the battery is the limiting factor. The IT geeks / programmers decide what level of security/encryption/control they want with our phones, and that is what dictates when we need to replace our phones.

But you are correct, that the future is always forcing a change and that it is inevitable.

Similar to what we see in cars etc. As ICE engines become less common and fuel prices rise, we can blame the EVs of the world. That being said, even at $10/gallon I would drive just as much as I do now. I know I will own an EV (and look forward to it), but the price of gas / insurance / surcharges etc for the privilege of a ICE will not stop me from driving them.

Last Thursday morning I woke up at about 3 :00 and my right knee hurt by the kneecap like I had banged it on something but I had not banged it on anything.

It kept getting worse every day, and on Saturday I was having sciatic pain and my whole leg hurt. I suspected I had gotten a DVT even though I'm up on my coumadin. So I went to the ER at midnight. I had to wait until 7 am to get ultrasound. They were super stingy with the pain meds, so it was 9 hours before they fixed that. Think gout from hips to ankle.

So now probably 3 days of antibiotic ivs.

I have an infected bursa.

Vendor sent us a long drawn out email about having to raise prices due to yada yada yada. Many words. Too many. Whatever...let's look at these prices.

The prices are on attached PDF. Sigh...whatever, I'll convert it to something actually useful. But as I take a closer look...

First, the bagels. Note these are all in 6-packs.
  • Plain = $3.84
  • Plain sliced = $3.96
  • Multi Grain = $4.10
  • Multi Grain sliced = $4.10
  • Whole Wheat = $3.80
  • Whole Wheat Sliced = $4.10
  • Cinnamon Raisin = $7.25
  • Cinnamon Raisin sliced = $3.96
  • etc

Um. What?

OK, how about the donuts. Those aren't sliced so how do those prices work? This time I'll also include their item numbers.
  • 6779 Regular (Cake, Old Fashion, Raised) = $0.90
  • 6779 Regular (Cake, Old Fashion, Raised) = $0.90
  • 10436 Cake Donut Cinnamon = $0.90
  • 11104 Cake Donut Blueberry = $0.90
  • 6779 Cake Donut Plain = $0.90
  • 6779 Cake Donut Plain = $0.90
  • 6780 Cake Donut Chocolate = $0.90
  • etc

It's like this all over the place. Prices are wildly inconsistent & duplicates abound.

Technically a septic knee bursa. I didn't bump it or cut it. Just got it. It was incredibly painful. I was screaming and swearing in the ED. I would rather have a 10 mm kidney stone. It was like having gout from my foot to hip.

If you don't have people skills, don't work in customer service.
If you don't like kids, don't become a teacher.
If you don't have any empathy or bedside manner, don't be a doctor or nurse.
If you don't have any mechanical ability, don't get a job fixing things with your hands.
If you don't speak clear English, don't work in a job where people rely on clear communication, like when calling the bank or insurance company or whatever.
etc. etc.

I don't know why this kind of thing is so hard for many in the workforce to grasp. I'm sorry you're having a bad day, but you're the one who sucks at your job. Focus that attitude elsewhere, not at me.

Hey lady at the doctor's office. I'm sorry I interrupted your smoke break or Facebook time or whatever, but I could hear you eyes roll over the phone when I asked to verify the appointment we just set up. I read it back to you just to confirm because it's kinda important for me to not miss it. Try harder to stifle that condescending sigh next time you twunt.

Participation trophies so everyone feels like you only need to contribute without success and STEM education so everyone feels like they can solve problems because they got good grades on a test even though they can't figure out how to use a single piece of information they've learned.
