Default Confirmed: Next Porsche 911 to Launch with 7-Speed Manual Transmission

http://blog.caranddriver.com/confirm...=Google+Reader

Quote:
More isn’t always better. We’ll agree in terms of power, but respectfully pass when we’re talking about weight. Transmission gears? We’re not sure. Some recent automatics have featured seven and eight forward ratios (and ZF has even announced a nine-speed auto), but the maximum for traditional clutch-and-lever manual transmissions has been six for some time. That’s about to change, however, because we’ve confirmed from various corporate sources that Porsche will offer a seven-speed manual in the next-generation 911, a development we first reported last November.

The point is to offer a tall, seventh gear for improved efficiency and reduced engine noise during long cruises. The shifting experience is said to be similar to that of the current six-speed manual—which we love—there’s just a bit more rowing to do, although, depending on the ratio spread, veteran Porsche drivers might also have to slightly tweak their thinking in terms of gear choice for upcoming corners. Unless something changes and the shift pattern is seriously wacky, though, we doubt anyone will get confused during hard driving, since seventh will hardly be anyone’s go-to gear for corner exit.

As to the next 911 itself, it carries the internal 991 designation and is scheduled to debut at the Frankfurt auto show this September. It will be based on the stretched architecture of the 996/997 and offer more rear seat space and a more comfortable, luxurious interior. Vehicle stability will be improved thanks to a longer wheelbase. Future generations of the 911, however, are expected to share many components with the next-gen Audi R8 and Lamborghini Gallardo as part of the VW Group’s highly flexible Modularer Sportbaukasten, or “modular sports architecture.” When and if this platform convergence happens, the 911 will keep its rear-engine layout, although the powerplant may nevertheless be moved forward significantly.

Porsche’s seven-speed manual only adds to the multiple gearbox options in the sports-car segment, which include dual-clutch, torque-converter, and modified automatics; traditional manuals; and even an entirely new single-clutch automatic in the Lamborghini Aventador. Will the seven-speed manual be offered by other automakers as well? At present, a supplier source tells us additional interest in the technology is limited.

Come on......improved mpg and noise reduction on the highway on long trips? This just strikes me as almost silly and gimmicky, though I don't know if I am ready to go that far with it. It just seems like making things more complicated, adding more "technology" just for the sake of it, to tweak something that did not need tweaking......which seems right in line with German car making proceedures. It is a darn Porsche 911. If you want a quiet drive with great mpg, buy a darn Prius.

^^ It's just a way to work around the efficiency rules and CAFE standards. Seventh gear lets the motor lope at highway speeds and gets mpg up. Why not I say.

It's just an overdrive gear, only used when doing 75 on the highway, I don't see it as being a big deal.

I'm more interested in the added rear legroom, rumored power bump up to near 400hp for the base Carrera and hopefully a Panameraesque interior.

added rear legroom in a 911?

so basically a 6MT with 7th gear for OD on the highway? i'd like that in my subaru because 75mph in 6th gear puts me at 3k+ rpms

I wonder if it is a non-automated version of the PDK, with a manual single clutch, and a manual linkage.

I would Imagine that the X51 Power Upgrade Kit will become stock.

Maybe not on the Carrera, but probably Carrera S.

There are spy-shots of the interior, and it is getting more Panamera-like.

911 is going more down the line of a Grand Tourer, than something that is half-sports car, and half-Grand Tourer.

In which case they should free up the Cayman to be the performance leader of the lineup that it should be...but I'm not a good logical businessperson so this won't happen.

Logical and Businessperson in the same sentence?

usually those are somewhat mutually exclusive.

I have long hoped that Cayman/Boxster would side-step the Carrera, and become a junior, affordable mid-engined car, under the 918 lineup. Porsche has also announced that a variant of the 918 project might be built near the Ferrari 458/Lambo Gallardo/McLaren MP4-12C price and performance points.

If Cayman/Boxster, goes from entry-level, to just under that 918 model, with Cayman R and Boxster Spyder, with up to 408 atmospheric horsepower, and slightly toned down 918-derived looks... (Cayman and Boxster should still have front and rear cargo areas, that 918 doesn't have an aft trunk, as it is all engine bay)

...that will be EPIC.

Anyone else remember when the 89 Corvette did the same thing to get past the Gas Guzzler tax. Sixth gear was for highway cruising only and ran something like 1800 rpm at 65mph. Top gear was a 0.50:1 ratio on an already tall final drive.

This is a great idea. It has been working for the Vette for 20 years. Want more mileage, gear the hell out of it. Need to accelerate, downshift.

^^^^ Yep.

Variocam keeps just enough TQ on tap to make loafing along at <2,000rpm possible.

I do not see any down-side to this. Improved overall fuel economy without any loss in hp/performance - what's not to like? Hopefully this will be the standard transmission on all base models, and not another 'Porsche Option'.

If it saves fast cars from new economic standards then just keep adding gears!

Nothing wrong with this, especially in a niche car like the 911. People will have an ample choice not to buy one if they can't get their heads around this 7MT. Whatever helps them with the fuel economy without killing the fun is a good move in my book.

I clicked on the link, and there's an update:
Quote:
UPDATE (6/1): Our sources are now confirming that, for cost reasons, the seven-speed manual is derived from Porsche's seven-speed dual-clutch PDK automatic
I wonder if HipToBeSquare was right... and what the shift pattern will look like?

I've thought that every manufacturer should already be doing this. Why do so many cars need a short final gear anyway? My 07 STI runs at ridiculously high RPM at highway speed, and makes enough torque to maintain those speeds at significantly lower RPM. It runs at noticeably higher RPM in 6th than my 04 WRX did in 5th, and makes 52% more torque...

...on the plus side I never need to downshift on an interstate with cruise control on, ever.

If I had to guess at a pattern:

I like it, too.

As for RPM, my old '94 Integra RS (base model) used to hover at 4,200 at 72mph. Plus, of course they had paper-thin sound insulation. That was fun, on road trips.

For the highway speed limits in the US this looks like a waste of effort.

I know my car sure could use an extra gear for the highway.
