Default The Subreal Atom Project...

Okay so this is a project that I have been playing around with for a while and I have finally come a point where I can get started. For years (ever since it I saw it completely destroy Jeremy Clarkson's face) I have had a stiffy for the Areal Atom. They way it handles, drives, and just the overall experience of getting to drive a go kart on the street has had my captivation. However reality hits hard when considering buying one because they are stupid expensive and I can't see myself spending that kind of money on a car I can only really drive a few months out of the year.

However, this year has shown me that the Legacy makes a great Auto X car but in order to stay competitive it would require me to do things to it that I would consider ruining the car. The Legacy was built to be a sophisticated comfortable DD that would be great driving long distances, used for going out with friends, and when the time comes, getting down and dirty in the corners. Once I started Auto Xing I started to mod it for racing buy upgrading the suspension components and swapping the tires for stickier ones. Then I just added a harness bar and some 4pts and I was happy.

But the time has come to built a propose built race car so I can soften the Legacy back up to the way it used to be and to have something that I can beat up at the track and use for spirited runs when the weather is nice.

So as mentioned before I have a fetish for the Areal Atom but no funds to buy it so I have decided to make my own***8230; Using***8230;. You guessed it. Subaru Parts!!!!

So for now I have ordered the first few parts to get the ball on this project rolling. In a few weeks I will start working on it. I started the thread now to discuss ideas and maybe get some input from the community for certain aspects of the project.

Here is the concept for the car:

It will be a tube frame car. The base will start with a DOM tuning 10pt roll cage for a 2dr GC8. From there I will make the floor and then mount the seat. I will be using a fixed back bucket seat with will be mounted pretty much directly to the floor. Then I will cut the main hoop down so that it's the require 3" above my head (with a helmet on). It should be about 6"

Once the main cockpit is finished I will install the dash and pedals from an 02 WRX. Just a dash skin and the bare minimum of wiring. No heater, no radio no nothing. Then the cockpit will be set on blocks and the front and rear frame rails will be made. The front will utilize the OE engine and tranny xmembers as well as the suspension in OE orientation. The rear will moved in as close as possible to the cockpit so a custom short shaft will have to be made. The rear suspension will be a 5 link with inboard suspension. It will be very similar to the suspension setup on the Traxxas Revo RC car. I will be using adjustable WRX lower trailing, and control arms. I will also be getting a few extra sets of control arms to make the upper control arms, push rods and rocker arms. I will be using the STi coilovers and just modifying the lower mount to fit the new end. Based on the cars weight the rocker ratio will be altered to work with the un modified strut.

To make it street legal as a kit car external panels and lights will be used from an 06 wrx. The front bumper hood and fenders will be un modified and install with an aluminum bumper support. The sides will consist of the OE door skins only and quarter panel weld together as one piece and bolted to the side of the chassis. The rear will be open w/ a large diffuser, and aluminum bumper beam with custom mounted taillights from a Audi Q7.

Engine will be a 2.5L sti block on WRX heads. A custom Forward Facing VF39 w/ tial 38mm external wastgate. Intake manifold will be custom ITB setup for fastest spool possible. HP should be around 320whp. Tranny will be the Ver 7 RS Spec-C Close Ratio non-DCCD from the Legacy with STi calipers and Girodisc 2pc rotors.

Custom Girodisc made Aluminum Uprights will be made that use the 5x114.3 Bolt on Hub for the front and rear for simplicity and easy overhaul. It will use Front CV axles in all 4 corners. Wheels and tires will be some cheap 17x9.5 or 10 on a 285/35/17 sticky street tire.

I could go into more detail but I will wait for comments and questions. Anyways I am pretty excited about this project I think it will make for a pretty crazy little car. Guesstimated weight is about 1200lbs with me in it maybe lighter and it will cost way less then an Areal Atom and have the benefit of AWD. I have many of the parts already from leftovers of previous projects and a fair amount is coming off the Legacy.

As I said the Roll Cage and seats have been ordered so I can start the cockpit fab in a few weeks but I have a couple other projects I need to finish first so updates will be coming soon. I guesstimate this project to take 2-3 months to complete while juggling other projects over winter.

Let the fun begin!

The STi ATV keeps coming to mind with this, but I like this idea much better.

Yeah I don't like the ATV. No Cage. I am going to put a Lexan windshield and roof, and side windows that are hinged on the A-pillar bar and stuck by magnate strips on the main hood like a little door on the front part of the cage but it will be a bolt on so I can remove and just drive with a helmet so it will look more like the Radical. That way I can drive it in the rain if I need to for any reason.

I see that and thing and think super light rear end an short rear base = twitchy

or

keep in mind that shortening your wheelbase will affect your anti-lift/dive percentages.

with the extensive suspension mods you have planned, some non-strut type coilovers would probably be a better starting point (especially considering weigt and valving of the STi struts) and just make your own control arms.

That is going to be interesting. With it having AWD it wouldn't really matter that the motor is up front instead of in the back like the Atom. I will keep an eye on this for sure. Good luck with the project man.

I have an Anti Lift setup already that I think its going to keep the Rear end down. The Fuel Cell, Battery and, and rear coilovers will all be consolidated over the rear tires as well as my mass with be about 4" away from the rear tire adding another 200lbs to the rear of the car so I think in the end it should even out.

Again I can always change the struts if these ones turn out to be to stiff but I am going to run them them to start so I can focus my funds on other areas. Worst case it that it works, but its just not optimal or I need to get a softer spring but I will still be able to race it if it gets down to the wire or I need to wait for custom pieces to be made. I intend to make this chassis very easy to disassemble and work on for maintenance and alterations as I notice things while driving it.

I wasn't thinking of a custom shock but just off the shelf parts like from a sprint car or some random QA1 shock.

Not a problem. I was figuring they'll give you a better shock for the application and require less fab work

Reminds me a lot of the UW Formula SAE cars of recent years, but as a full-sized car.

Any updates in the last few weeks?

No I have some parts but other projects are being molded and rearranged so it will be some time before I get to work on this more.
