This really has ZERO to do with the post I was responding to.

Nobody that's who. Except maybe people like me and a handful of others who post here.

So there's that.

I was refering to MANY years of sales "....up to 2006..." and had included decreases in sales. Absolutely NOTHING about profitability. He asked about who was buying these cars and I was telling him it was still the same loyal Subaru customers as always.......and since you are cherry picking......yes, they were some loss of customers and conquest of customers. The "smooth" increase AND decrease was just basically "status quo".

No you are completely misunderstanding what I'm getting at. Honestly, it's not worth correcting. There should be a SoD sticky thread so these conversations about what happened 20 years ago can take place. Because every new WRX model seems to rehash all this crap.

its a family sports car

I think that's what Subaru intended with this design anyway. A sportier outback.

It is an affordable, practical family sports sedan with a real AWD system and a great 6 speed manual.

Not really.

Affordable - It used to start around $24k
Practical - It used to offer a wagon or hatch
Family - It is too small for a family
Sports Sedan - It has cladding and a raised suspension, it's basically a coupe SUV
Great 6 speed manual - Cable is not great. Old mechanical 5MT and STI 6MT are great.

Real AWD system - fine.

Give this up already. HALF an inch higher with a lower CoG than the HALF inch lower car it replaced.

Why did they raise it? Was that to make it better on track?

Yes, really:

Affordable - very much so, new car prices skyrocketed and this car starts around 30K.
Practical - way more practical than a hatchback like the GTI if you have child seats and a lot more safe in a rear end collision.
Family - perfect size for your average active family. Second to none safety rating, all weather performance and fantastic ground clearance for this class. Great enthusiast alternative to the vanilla boring CUVs
Sport sedan - Real AWD, 6 speed, great turbo boxer motor. One of the few sport sedans with a 6 speed left on the market.

I stand by what I said. The WRX is not the Swiss Army knife of cars that it once was. Nor is it the Dad-Mobile like the WRX wagon. Not sure who is going to pay $36k for WRX, when that used to be the price of an STI.

...And this all pains me. I've owned 4 Rexs. I wanted to own one more.

To make the ride less harsh for the intended audience of middle aged men and women hauling their families around and the extra wheel gap with the plastic fender cladding gives off a rugged wilderness vibe.

I have my problems with the WRX same as the next guy, but can we please not call it "too small"?
