Default MAPerformance Phase 2 93 Oct and 91 Oct Tune with Cobb Accessport!

Many of you may have seen, or are currently following our tuning thread from a few months ago. Our goal was to produce an OTS tune for the WRX
that would out perform the Cobb OTS maps, to help owners enjoy their cars that much more. We are extremely happy with the results, and all
of the great customers who have backed us up and supported us along the way. So first and for most, THANK YOU!!!

Originally we released tunes for 93 octane. Great for some of us here in the mid west, but not so great for customers out west, or the rest of the states for that matter. So we are now happy to inform you that a 91 tune is now being released! In addition to that, we went back in to take a look at areas of improvement in our existing tune. This includes focusing an extensive amount of time with the factory boost controller, working with the variable valve timing to smooth out idle, rev hang etc. Let's take a look at the results:

***Customers who purchase an Accessport from us will receive either of these tune files for free. Existing customers are eligible for a free update!***

Overall, we are pretty happy with where we landed with tuning the car, even if the car suffered too much heatsoak during dyno tuning to reflect the normal engine output. The benefits to running a refined 91 Octane tune vs. the Cobb OTS 91 octane tune is simply the smoothness, consistency with boost (no more oscillations) and moderately more power at higher RPMs.

**The 91 Octane dyno testing was extremely hampered by heatsoak and the car having snow tires. This means the final tune’s dyno graph and peak HP/TQ numbers are lower than expected, however when compared against the OTS and previous tune, they are considerably higher.

Dyno and street testing took place next in order to explore the complaints voiced by customers and Cobb OTS or MAP tunes.

The complaints are generally:

1) “With the OTS/MAP Tunes and the stock boost controller, there are boost spikes at spool up, and also significant boost oscillations throughout the RPM range.”
2) “The Stock boost controller can’t run higher boost at higher RPM.”

It was confirmed that the stock cars and the OTS /MAP v1 Tunes do have overshoot and oscillations, and that their boost drops off well below target at higher RPMs. However, I was able to remedy practically all of these issues through tuning alone, and the result is steady spool up with no overshoot or oscillations throughout the RPM range. It was also demonstrated that through tuning alone, I was able to run 18-19psi at higher RPMs. However, dyno testing showed that once the engine built up any real heatsoak, this added boost pressure at higher RPMs did not have a positive effect on power output.

Here is a comparison to demonstrate power differences between several of the tunes throughout testing.

But Ian, none of these graphs "excite" me. I need more! Well, before you judge too quickly, let me just show you a little behind the scenes of what REALLY goes down with our tuning:

Again, our ultimate goal with this revision, was NOT to try to extract even more power, but to improve on drivability, and to smooth out the power band. We also wanted to see what we could do with the stock boost controller to provide a better, smoother boost curve to reduce spike, and to hold boost at higher RPMs, similar to what some 3-ports on the market do. Now, I am not saying EBCS is not worth it. We will see if it's required once we add our catless downpipe. Thanks again, and feel free to ask any questions you may have!

What I look for in all my tunes is a factory pedal sensitivity. (high). Is this new 91 tune like most of them, where it removes most of the sensitivity of pedal?

Yes it is. We prefer a more linear pedal feel, as that is what most customers prefer.

90% throttle with 10% input? No thanks.

I think you might be one of ~3 people on the forum who liked that from the s*** factory tune.

I never could understand why the factory pedal is set to skyrocketing RPMs with the slightest touch.

this actually happened to my 2016 wrx , once I put my cobb tune all the sensibility went away and I was kind of disappointed because it doesn't feel as responsive as it did stock.

Is the 91 octane tune available now for those who already purchased the AP and have the 93 tune. I would like to use the 91 to compare since I am limited to 92 WA St octane or local 91/94 CND octane

Single gear graphs not showing target don't really show much. Can you post logs loading up 3rd and shifting to 4th after 6k. Please include target and actual boost.

Can't wait for the new tune!! Have you guys done testing on the crappy winter 93 octane yet to see if it has any issues when using winter blend gas?

The 93 and that I put in my car is the winter blend. So no issues there.

Pretty sure the whole point in the revision was to improve drivability.

This answers exactly nothing but thanks. Want to hear from someone who drove both to see what they felt was better/worse. I figured Ian has driven the new tune.
