Default 2015 WRX - Recommendations for higher mileage All season/Summer Tire.

Hi everyone, thanks for viewing my post.

Before I get started, I have a 2015 WRX and about 48,000 miles. I wanted to mention that I do have snow tires. Michelin x ice. I am from Chicago, IL where it can hit all 4 seasons in one day at times.

What I am looking for is to get more than 20-30k miles out of a summer/all-season tire. Out of all my friends, I tend to have to drive everybody everywhere including long road trips. So it would be awesome if I could get something that can last a bit longer and if it can be a tad quiter than the stock Dunlops (Thats a plus)

No matter what next summer tire or all season tire I get, I am still going to use my winter tires for the remainder life of the tires. I probably have one or two winter's left with them.

So my current stock oem tires are around 5/32s and come next Spring I will be looking to replace the tires. I am looking for reccomendations of either a high mileage summer tire or
high mileage all season or touring tire to simply get 40k+ out of it during the Spring/Summer months only. Before posting I have been doing some research on Tirerack and below is what I have come up with as options.

I do plan on sticking with the stock wheels and tires of 235/45/17. I don't want to be cheap, but I was shooting for something between $160-180 a tire.

Summer Tires -
1. PILOT SPORT 4S
2. Continental ExtremeContact Sport

Grand Touring All-Season -
1. Vredestein Quatrac 5 ( I see these have really good reviews but with 45,000 mile warranty)
2. Michelin Premier A/S ( Would be #1 choice but its a $200.00 price tag! but comes with 60,000 mile warranty)

Ultra High Performance All-Season
1. Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+
2. Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus

Any recommendations is greatly appreciated.

The Continental DWS06 may also be of interest. FWIW, the DWS06 is a good match IMO when someone wants reasonably good performance at a very competitive price, but does necessarily need the ultimate wet or ultimate dry grip. It has respectable dry/wet performance, unusually good light snow performance for a UHP A/S, very refined road manners, and offers solid performance in intermediate weather conditions + sub-freezing dry. (It obviously will not have the braking, responsiveness, cornering stability, or feedback of a good dedicated summer tire in warm conditions, and steering would probably be more vague versus your summer OEMs.) The DWS06 is warrantied for 50k miles but getting 60k+ is quite doable in my experience, especially if you are only using them in summer/intermediate seasons, where you can continue to drive them once the 'S' disappears from the 'D' 'W' 'S' treadwear indicator. Further, the DWS06 is generally very competitively priced normally, and often eligible for buy-3, get-1 sales. Comfort and road noise is outstanding.

The Michelin A/S 3+ has (arguably significantly) better dry/wet performance than the DWS/DWS06 (and P Zero A/S+), but inferior snow performance than the DWS/DWS06 IMO. The A/S 3+ is warrantied for 45k IIRC, although I cannot speak to actual long-term treadwear outcomes (that said, the reviews I read before buying a set led me to believe that the longevity was excellent.) The A/S 3+ really pushes the boundaries of a UHP A/S, and it definitely skews in the direction of dry/wet performance. However, this is not going to be comparable to class-leading summer performance tires.

All that said, on my current car I've decided to use a dedicated summer performance tire in the warmer months as I want the benefits of such.

Thank you both for your input. I get it, that its odd that I want to go to an All season tire when I still plan to use dedicated Winter tires. But as a person who is always driving on long trips, I feel like a true summer tire is just a waste. I think the A/S 3+ is my current choice come Springtime.

Given the usually longer life of an A/S, I certainly understand the thought behind it...the summer tires on my car are melting like butter in the sun compared to the UHP A/S' I've run! And IMO the A/S 3+ is a good match for someone running snow tires because in the time I owned the A/S 3+ I got the impression that it was a very good 3 season tire, very capable in warmer dry/wet, well suited for intermediate weather, but poorly suited to anything other than the lightest of snow. With snow tires, you don't have to worry about that last part.

I've had excellent experience with the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S (and +)

If you've got snow tires and just want an A/S tire for summer and shoulder seasons (cold but not snowy) it's an excellent choice.

I'm sure the Pirelli is good too.

I just got Michelin Pilot Sport a/s 3 + yesterday. Costco has them for $70 off for a few more days, which is $670 installed. You just missed the free install which saves another $60. They’re significantly louder than the outgoing Dunlop Sportmaxx, just FYI.

Initial grip impressions are good, steering feels more responsive but less feedback at low speeds IMO. Took a few twisties and was impressed, but haven’t pushed the limit yet

Hope this helps you choose!

just a quick update. I ended up going with the Bridgestone Potenza RE980AS. Think i got a little over 100-110 off by using combination Bridgestone rebate and Discount Tire's credit card for purchase. Think I have about 1,500 miles on them by now, pretty good tires. Still getting used to them.

A little update after putting about 17000 miles on the DWS06. They are kinda soft side walls. Snow grip is okay even in deep snow. Any deeper my car just high centers not the problem with tires. They became kinda noisy and wear weird.

I considering the Vredestien Quatrac 5 or Quatrac Pro for my winter tires. I have a 4x4 truck for days when there is snow on the ground, so my STI will not be my goto winter car. These sound like a great compromise as they have the 3PMSF rating, which I cant find on any other tire that is not a winter only.

The Quatrac 5/Pro are not "All-Season", they are the new "All-Weather" tire with the (3-Peak Mountain Snowflake) designation.

Allow me to help you, since it apparently was too hard for you to actually read the thread before posting useless advice.
