Are you doing rolling shots? Shutter Priority. Set ISO so you can shoot at least at f/5.6 Do you want a shallow depth of field? Shoot at a wide F stop. Do you want everything in focus? Get a tripod. Swing that F stop up to 11. Get that ISO low as possible. So it really depends on everything. My personal opinion is just shoot. Critiquing is the best way to improve. Ask others on their opinions on your shots, and ask what you wanted in the picture that didn't really happen. E.g. How do I get cool color effects? How do I get a flatter image? etc. |

In my decision-making process I usually start at ISO 200 - versatile sensitivity to the light, acceptable image quality. Then I think about my subject - what do I want to capture about it? This will help me determine whether my second key setting will be aperture or shutter speed related. Do I want to isolate a key feature and have rapid fall-off/shallow DOF, is the subject bigger and therefore needing more DOF to get it all w/in the plane of focus? Is the subject stationary or moving? Do I want to capture it sitting still or would a little motion blur be better? Generally, you determine 2, then the 3rd setting becomes obligatory, to an extent. There are always exceptions and always a balance to be struck. Part science, bigger part art. |

Sunny 16 "rule" states that proper exposure on a sunny day is 1/100, f/16, ISO100.
Clouds are about 1-3 stops darker. Then just work from there. Shoot lots. Eventually you can look at a scene and know how big of an exposure triangle you need. |

Thanks guys. The funny part is that the only reason I did that shot was because I thought it would be fun. The aftermath of it has been fun as well. It will be really cool to show this to him someday.
