Footwell Illumination install 2011 WRX
Hey Forum,
Today I did a quick mod to the interior of my new WRX limited. If you are interested in more write-ups, mods and installs, check out my build thread here! The footwell illumination kit was inexpensive and easy to install. It gives a nice glow and matches the stock console tray perfectly. I bought it from Subaru Parts Mall found here. It was $37.23 I give it a 2 out of 10 for install difficulty. and it took about 20 minutes to install not counting taking pictures. Here's the install I started by removing the radio trim. you can easily remove it by hand starting on the lower sides and work you way around to the top. I removed the center heating ducts. it makes the install a lot easier and give you access to every thing you need. To remove, unscrew the 2 Phillips screws on the side and push the side ducts out of the way and lightly pull out. These are the parts that come with the kit. I also removed the center console cover to reveal the stock light. Please see my kartboy install for directions on how to remove the console. Once the console is removed, push the stock light with your thumb from inside the dash below where the duct was. Then run the harness as follows: The two male and female connectors that are close to one another go into the hole where the light was. The longest wire on the harness gets threaded to the passenger footwell and the slightly shorter wire goes to the drivers side footwell. I did the best I could to explain this in the busy picture below. Install the passenger side light using the supplied screw, nut, and washers. There is a hole drilled already under the glove box that the bolt went into. It's a Phillips screw and a 3/16" nut. The drivers side is similar to the passenger. There is a hole but it's horizontal instead of vertical. Use the screw, nut, and washers that are supplied to mount. Zip-tie the harness out of the way and install the stock light back into its original location. Once you put the console, duct, and radio trim back on, turn on the lights and enjoy the cool red (or blue) glow! Use the center console light as a gauge to how bright these are. In this picture I used a long shutter speed to show the lights but they are not this bright in person. Thanks for reading!! Last edited by Overland04; 03-04-2012 at 08:19 AM. |

Nice write-up!! And very high quality pictures.
I installed it too, but I didn't remove anything though. It was a pain but patience works out just fine. |

My car came with them stock (STI Limited) and they only work when I open the doors. The console one works with the headlights, but not the footwell ones. That is how it is supposed to work I am told.
I wonder how yours work with the headlights, as I would like to change mine around that way. |

I've heard the the STI has it wired to the door switch. I would assume that a simple re-wire could fix that if desired. Worst case, you could purchase this kit for $37 and do a re-install. I like this kit just because its all red, I've seen a lot that have the contrasting blue. Thanks for reading! |

And for all who are thinking about re-wiring the the footwell illumination kit to work with just door operation be careful. Those switches are not a regular +/- power setup. They run off of constant + and ground out to operate when doors open. They run off of a relay as well and resistor to give you those 3-4 seconds of light after doors close. I had 2 friends try this on there 11' hatches and BOTH of them grounded out their entire interior fuse panel and caused crazy interior illumination issues. Word to the wise is all!! |

Then you can just run the harness to the existing lights, and done, leave the stock plugs for the lights unhooked and keep the spare footwell lights from the kit. You could also install both, I have read about someone with an STI doing that, one side has a hole usable for a second footwell lamp, the other side he drilled a hole, the attachment method is very simple. |

Do you happen to know who it was that did that in their STi? I would love to PM them about it. |

Great writeup. Knowing to remove the radio and stuff really helped. I did this at twilight and ALMOST dropped a screw into the ventilation ducts. Glad I didn't, but people should be careful of that or it will be a major headache to get that screw back.

Great write up on this! Purchased and installed today in about 25 minutes without removing anything. Dealer quoted 2hr install and I looked at them like they were crazy!

hey overland, I know you have helped me out quite a bit with my questions i've had and always contribute to this forum so i thought i would do alittle bit of researching and put forth my savings to some of the new combers that want to try out this mod!
Through subaru parts mall the part comes out to be $52.85 shipped for me. There is actually a dealer in colorado that sells most oem subaru products for 25% off msrp. Heuberger Subaru is a great site to purchase oem parts from! Heuberger is selling the footwell kit shipped for $45.91 to my door! I will be purchasing my V limited sti lip from t his site as well as its only 300 shipped! http://parts.subaru.com/?siteid=215892 |

I used your instructions for the install with a 2011 STi and it worked great. Although, for an STi, I don't know how necessary the removal of the center console was (i just ran all the wires behind the HVAC controls up above the stock light)...but either way, the instructions were very good.
I didn't need to drill any holes by using the adhesive that came with the package to just mount the courtesy lights on top of the Kit Light mount where it's peeking over the edge of the Kit Lights. I put a little more instruction for any STi owners that wanted to try it out. See post #10: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2253407 Here's a pic of what it looks like with both installed under the driver side. |

Ive got a 2011 rex. Just finished mine. Nice clean, easy install. Didn't remove the center console. Was able to get the stock light to pop out by reaching down through the vent space and pushing it through from the bottom. Thank you very much for the write up. Saved me a lot of time and headache. Also installed the SPT heat shield. Easy installs thanks to people who do it and post on here :-)
